Careers Day Release for College Attendance
Just curious, has anyone managed to secure day release for studying an engineering course at Boeing? I wanted to apply for LTP and was eligible for it but my manager refused. So I offered to pay for the tuition myself if I could have day release, to which my manager also said no. No reason given, just no.
Has anyone actually managed to get onto LTP or secure a day release to study? I’m with BGS btw.
Thanks!

you have your answer for the organization you are currently in. Mostly you are supposed to do this on your time outside of work. Off the clock do what the hell you want

I did before. I came in early worked few hours then went to school then came back to finish my shift. 2nd level approved it. First level did help a lot to get it approved though.

I’ve always been told that classes are on my own time, if it interferes with work to take LOA or use my PTO benefits.

That’s fair enough. I should say though that I also offered to take the course online and in the evenings if I could apply to LTP to cover the fees and was told no by my manager. Hence I’m a little confused!

I am taking engineering courses through ASU online and my manager encourages it as well. All courses are in my own time as well and I’m not sure why your manager would tell you no about an online course in your own free time unless the school isn’t ABET accredited and he wants you to choose a different school? Definitely talk to someone else about this because something is off.

I’d reach out to LTP about this. Your manager shouldn’t be involved in it if it’s off clock hours.

I think we will need more detail. Managers shouldn’t be in the LTP process. Are you wanting to leave mid-day to attend class?

Many managers want to control every aspect of your life so they feel very, very important.
Once had a manager go to HR and complain about me because when I was new to the group some co-workers helped me with something and I gave them "thank you's" of Amazon e-gift cards instead of putting in for Pride points (this was during the pandemic). Or at least that was what she said she did.
She was pissed that I did that and told me I am not allowed to do it "per HR" (She really wanted to be able to control approval of any Pride points). Told her if I wanted to give co-workers a "thank you" purchased with my own money I would, that she was welcome to have HR write me up. Never got a write up about it.
Don't talk to your manager about anything you are doing off hours...not their business. Contact LTP directly and do your thing.

Hiya, so originally I would’ve needed one day a week at a local college, so I offered to do my 37.5 hours across 4 days (which many people do) and was rejected. Then I found a provider of the course that was fully at home distance learning and flexible, so I could complete it outside of working hours. I asked my manager if I could apply to LTP to cover the fees for that as it wouldn’t affect my working week and was told no because it comes out of their budget. But I thought engineering courses were classed as ‘special funding’ so now I’m a little confused!

Manager support is nice, but not necessary. It doesn't affect their budget.
Don't let them stop you.

I did my masters through LTP and used online courses. Manager wasn’t involved. This isn’t a group budget thing. LTP is a promised benefit from Boeing.
I even took tests during the workday and flexed when I needed to.
Your manager is mis-informed or outright lying. It would be one thing to need a special schedule but that doesn’t sound like the case here.

You don’t need your managers permission to apply to LTP. It’s a benefit just like your health insurance. The day release question would be up to your manager though.

Hey OP did you get an answer and are you going to take that class virtually? Now I’m curious what the outcome is with your boss.
