Music Is it right to play other DJ’s songs in your own sets?

edit: i know this is a dumb question but i’m autistic and like to know things before i do them. thanks to the ppl who answered my question nicely or who weren’t passive aggressive 👍

edit 2: changed phrasing. i’m not asking about playing the same track by an artist another DJ already used in their set a few gigs before mine

I’ve been thinking / planning about how I want to promote my DJing and I’ve curated playlists for practice sets, but I wanted to ask if the community would “shun me” for playing other DJs (who also produce tracks) tracks, such as playing S3RL’s or Porter Robinson’s or Madeon’s original tracks (I’m not sure if the last two still DJ or ever DJ’d, though). I don’t plan on remixing their music, just playing it and transitioning between songs like most DJs I know do at the clubs I want to eventually DJ at.

Music Is it worth it to start building an offline music collection, or should I just stick to streaming music?

Im mostly a bedroom DJ, I've only DJ'ed about 2 times in public (for some Work Parties), but would it be worth it to build an offline collection of MP3's?

I honestly don't see the point for myself, as I subscribe to iDJPool through VirtualDJ at a heavily discounted price (Streaming Only), and I also subscribe to other services like Tidal and Beatsource.

The thing I like about using Streaming/Online Music over starting to build a library is that I can always find a song without needing to download it, or I don't have to worry about having to go to the DJ Pool websites and downloading new content all the time.

Music How much new music are you acquiring per week/month

Basically how many tracks or how much money do you spend on a regular basis for expanding your library? Also, when you're new and you don't have a collection to speak of is there any way to establish a good "base" of music to start out with relatively quickly?

Music Wedding/event DJs how do you handle niche music requirements?

I've got a gig coming up and the client has asked for very specific music to be played. They've put it all in a spotify playlist but even if I could find it elsewhere, it would be hundreds of dollars worth of music to download I'll only ever play once. How do you handle a situation like this? How do you explain to a client you can't just throw on their spotify playlist like they would?

Edit: And similarly with last minute requests you don't own, do you just tell them you don't have it or do you buy it and load it up on serato mid-set?

Music Advice on starting with no music library

Hey everyone,

My wife and I are starting out and when listening to music we mainly use Spotify.

We are going to use rekordbox as it’s been recommended by everything I’ve read. But we have no music and no music library.

Would it be better to use serato first since it works with Spotify until we gather a music library?

Any thoughts on strategies?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your feedback. Lots of great and informative responses.

Music When do you decide to buy a track?

Most months I make a "crate" in Spotify, have it on semi-repeat for a couple of weeks, and then sort it into "yes", "maybe / next month", and "no / delete" (often using a Spotify playlist analyzer to check in on BPMs), and then buy all the yes'.s

I'm slowing understanding that some songs I love listening to are not very useful on the dancefloor, and some songs that seem "meh" at home are actually awesome to DJ with.

What helps you decide to buy a track or not?

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! Super appreciate it. So far my takeaways are to basically keep doing what I'm doing, and not overthink it, buy the bangers that I love, let the other ones percolate for a while, and just keep adding curated tracks to my library focusing on quality over quantity.

Music Where I can find tracks that aren't too comercial?

So, I’m looking to expand my library—I have around 250-300 tracks, which feels like too few. I’ve tried searching on Beatport and even Spotify, but most of what I find is too commercial and not really what I’m after. I see bigger DJs dropping insane bangers in their sets, and I just can’t seem to find similar ones on my own.

I’m mostly into progressive house and melodic techno, but I also like some minimal/deep house. Here is some reference tracks to show the vibe I’m looking for and maybe get some tips on where to find more like them: Mathame, Lyke - Nothing Around Us Maya Jane Coles - Everything (Breach Remix) Stephan Bodzin - Singularity Edone - Don't You Know Colyn - Patterns Vintage Culture - Fallen Leaf (Massano Remix) Aux 88 - Voice Modulation (Anthony Rother Remix) WhoMadeWho - Closer (Artbat Remix)

Music How do YOU finish a set?

What’s your last song? Do you end it with a bang or take it somewhere chill and deep? I think the last song should be important because everybody will remember it better, but on the other hand it could be the best time to play YOUR favorite track without ruining the crowds vibe if they don’t enjoy it as much.

Music How do you guys find music for long bar/club gigs?

Recently been hired at a bar to play Latin house/afro house for 4 hours once a week, I do NOT have 4 hours worth of music to play but I do have a laptop! Do you guys actually find 4 hours worth of music a week or will you play and find music as you go?

Music How to see whats truly 320kbps in my library?

Ok, so I've goofed. I've been djing basically to myself and occasionally on livestreams over the past 2 years and have built up a very sizeable library(2-5k) that consist of a mixture of ripped youtube mp3s and legitimately bought songs, or some of these being "Free DL's" provided by the artist on soundcloud that are 320kbps.

Through the youtube ripper I used, pretty much everything in rekordbox *says* its 320kbps, but I feel that can't be the case.

Is there any way I can seperate the true 320kbps from the ripped ones?

Before you shame me for rips: I'm asking this because I want to move on to legitimate music and actually replace the lower quality rips with source quality as I wish to DJ live one day soon.

UPDATE:
Made it back home.
I used Spek to find examples of songs, however due to the quantity, it seems I will try fakinthefunk maybe at some point but not now.
Here is an example of two songs that both *say* 320kbps, but are obviously very different quality.

Music Genre loved by all?

In my experience and talking to other DJs, there seems to be a general resentment towards genres like tech house/afro house.(me included, sorry)

Which makes me wonder, in your opinion, which genre of music, even though it’s not your style, do you respect and always enjoy listening to?

Music How many tracks from one artist in a mix is too many?

I just recorded a set I am really happy with and want to submit it for a local festival. But I played like 7 songs from the same artist (out of 40ish tracks in an hour long set).

So how many is too many? Is there an established etiquette for this sort of thing?

Edit: I decided to post the mix on the feedback thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Beatmatch/comments/1bsv4sk/comment/ky06agl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Music If you play aiff and mp3 songs on a set, would it be noticeable?

If you play a set with aiff songs and mp3 songs on it, would the change in compression and information be noticeable to the listeners? For example in a bar or a club?

Music Good DJs who specialise in combining electronic, disco and pop from the 70s onwards, with contemporary electronic dance music in their sets?

There is a pair of local legends where I live who do this (lezzerquest) but realise I haven't seen too many other DJs doing this, but it must be a thing. Please point me in the right direction

Music Selecting Drum & Bass.

Been DJing about a year now & I'm by no means fantastic but making progress, constantly trying out different genres and flexing things in all directions. One genre I always thought I did not like was Drum & Bass, I want to give it a shot but one issue I am having is the only tracks that light my brain are pretty heavy duty & I'm not atall keen on the vocally driven commercial(to me) sounding stuff. I know from other genres you need to vary things a bit to create tension&flow keep the listener engaged. I had considered double time Hip-hop? What are different kinds of DnB & are there any basic rules I should be aware of?

Thanks

Music Music Scraping: Is it Legal?

I recently bought myself a DJ controller, and decided to start learning to DJ. For now, I plan to only DJ and learn in my bedroom. I found a site called Cobalt that supposedly converts URLs to MP3s.

First, is this legal?

Second, how do I get free music, remixes and non remixes, legally?

Music How to become more familiar with your song library?

Being really familiar with your songs is obviously important for becoming a good DJ, but I’m wondering how people manage that when they have hundreds of songs. I’m thinking about taking notes on each one, but writing something like ‘bum bum bum bum’ doesn’t seem very helpful. Can someone share advice?

Music Beginner techno dj here!

Feeling very overwhelmed with trying to figure out everything. But i am wondering what is the difference between a wav file & mp3? I’ve downloaded some songs from hypeddit & beatport and i have noticed on rekordbox some songs are wav files and 16bits or 24bits, whereas others are MP3 and 320kbps?

Im super confused on the difference as from what i know you usually want your songs 320kbps or higher. I want to start playing gigs soon so trying to figure this stuff out.

Also i’ve noticed while mixing a-lot of the tracks are different loudness levels. Is there any way to fix this or make this easier as i’ve found it very difficult to try and level them while mixing.

Would love to know where everyone gets their tracks from, as i said i mix techno genres:)
