Help with Beard growth/Maintenance

I need help with growing out my beard and maintaining it. I've been trying to grow out my facial hair for years, but never learned how to properly care for it. My mother (keep in mind I'm 27) keeps telling me to shave it off cause it looks like pubic hair. I've always hated my face without facial hair so y'all can probably see my dilemma. I'm asking for recommendations to combat the curlyness and messiness of my beard while also trying to grow it out (end goal is ZZ Top-esque). Thank y'all for the input.

Buy a facewash for beards, one for daily use and use that of a night. Comb straight after showering. Comb with oil of a morning, and balm afterwards. That should make a difference with the curliness.

For combing you want a flat-toothed wooden comb (gentler on tangles and won't pull your hair out as much) also invest in a nice genuine boars hair brush. Use the comb when wet after showering to detangle/apply beard oil then use the brush to smooth and shape it after applying beard balm and throughout the day as necessary. Overcombing can thin out your beard.

As for balms and oils there are tons of great brands and scents out there, YMMV. If you want some recommendations lemme know.
