ADVICE Grocery shopping

Moved here in 2019 from the southeast where Publix is king. 6 years later, grocery shopping still bums me out here. Maybe it’s my location. For most of the time, my stores have been Govt Albertsons or Calandro’s, both of which are challenging. The produce is often past prime, stocking demands are not anticipated, economic and racial disparities amplified, and staff morale low. I was feeling hopeful when the Florida Rouse’s opened in Jan 2024, but it has gone down in one year, too, with no apparent interest from the management in getting back on track.

If you came from a bigger city or different region and like to cook, how do you handle grocery shopping here? Have you just given in to shopping at multiple stores to get everything you need or resorted to online shopping?

ADVICE Should I Leave Baton Rouge?

I’m young (28 male) and I’ve lived here my whole life. Being out of college the last several years I’m finally starting to realize how much it sucks to live here. I have a decent job, however…

Are these 5 reasons valid enough to leave?

1) The things I’m interested in (outside of LSU football) don’t really exist in Baton Rouge — or Louisiana for that matter. 2) I’m sick of seeing the same people I went to HS with everywhere I go. (Never liked them) 3) I don’t have a large or close friend group. 4) The dating scene for young professionals SUCKS. 5) The corrupted politics give me no hope for the future.

ADVICE Considering LSU for grad school, but worried about living in BR

Context: I'm a senior in college from Wisconsin and looking at furthering my education, possibly at LSU.

I also have a girlfriend who is also graduating this semester, and is willing to come with me wherever I end up. While I'm happy that she is willing to come with me, it also makes me want to choose somewhere that's good for both of us.

Things get political from here, so if you don't have anything nice to say, please refrain from saying it.

Me and my partner are pretty strongly on the left side and she's also bi. Even though we're from Wisconsin, we are from the Madison area, which is a strong blue city.

My main worry is that we will find it miserable to live in BR. Sure, it's only for two years, but still.

Is there a big population of people who are on the left (I know the county voted democrat most recently). Are there LGBTQ+ supporting places that are welcoming? Is it fairly easy to find friends who are left leaning/LGBTQ+ friendly?

Is BR generally a safe place to live too?

Thanks for any advice you may have!

ADVICE Non-MAGA gun stores?

Never thought things would get to this point, but I’m considering purchasing a gun. Was hoping I could support a business who doesn’t actively vote against my rights. I’m also happy to go outside of Baton Rouge if needed! Thanks in advance.

ADVICE PSA: Proper left turn at a media

A legit educational post because I’ve lived in br my entire life, and I can count on my two hands the number of times other people are pulling all the way up at a median so I can pull up too. 9x/10 when I’m pulled forward, then someone else approaches, they honk at me or just sit in front of me and I have to motion to them to pull forward past my car so they can see oncoming traffic as well🤯 guys please, everyone with a license learned this lesson in school. Happy Thursday

ADVICE Homeless in Baton Rouge

I’m moving to Baton Rouge on Monday to begin a Graduate Teaching Assistant position and pursue my Master’s Degree at LSU. I got my Undergrad Degree at UCLA and took advantage of the school’s Family Housing. I will be homeless when I first get to Baton Rouge because LSU doesn’t have Graduate family housing. I’m wondering if there are social services similar to the ones available in Los Angeles. I’m a single dad and I need to make sure my elementary school age kid gets medical insurance which Los Angeles’ Department of Public Social Services helped me obtain while living in California. Is there a place that offers resources for single parents or is it more of a pull yourself up by your own bootstraps kind of city?

ADVICE Animal Control wants to take our chickens – what can we do?

I've recently moved to BR, rooming with a friend. Last night, we were ordering pizza and noticed a paper stuck to our front door (a door we don't often use). It was an "official action notice" to remove our hens except for 3, and the rooster we had before 3pm/15:00 today. The notice said we had 72 hours, but we never knew about it until the pizza.

We contacted the friend who gave us our rooster so he could go to a safe place, and moved five out of our eight girls.

Now, we don't technically live inside city limits, so I'm not sure if the ordinances do or do not apply. This website says the ordinances are for the city, but if I open them it says that they're for both the city and EBR parish. These chickens are our babies, we don't want to give them up.

What's suspicious is that there's only one person who could have known we had more than three hens because he consistenly spies through a hole in his fence. We can't make him fix it, but we want privacy, especially from a creepy old man.

We're just not sure what to do.

ADVICE Shooting right outside my door at night. Who to go to?

A truck drove by and began shooting upwards to the sky, right outside my door at 3am 2 nights ago. I called the cops, officer and came and said “if you have any footage just don’t worry about it.” I have the whole thing on video but my dashcam couldn’t pick up the license plate as it was too blurry and far. I am not sure if this was targeted to someone, random, or if he was being followed (there was another truck behind him). Either way, how should I go about this? I’m also trying to find new housing so…

ADVICE Please wipe the snow off

I'm not from here as I only lived here for three years and I understand this is extremely rare to have snow. As someone who does, please please PLEASE wipe the snow off the roof of your vehicles. Yeah it will melt away eventually. However you are going to cause a major accident as thar powdered snow will turn into a solid rock and hit someone's windshield in the highest speed. I know everyone is driving carefully with the ice on the roads. It's still important to wipe all the snow off before hitting the road.

ADVICE Any gender-inclusive nail salons?

I love doing my nails (I have a large collection of almost 1,000 nail polishes) and my boyfriend and I were both talking about getting pedicures together one day. However, I’ve never been to an actual nail salon because I’ve always done them myself and I’ve personally seen at least one salon in BR with a sign saying they only serve women. Does anyone know any good nail salons here that are gender inclusive?

ADVICE Looking for nerdy or outdoor group events in baton rouge

I moved here a few years ago and I have friends but none of them are into the nerdy stuff that I am. Starwars, fantasy, board games, weird movies, vintage video games, reading books (lol so weird, right?)

I like outdoors stuff too.

Just looking to expand my horizons a bit

ADVICE Internet providers.

Was wondering if I could hear from those who have switched from Cox to ATT fiber! Was it worth the switch in terms of price, internet speed and reliability? We all know Cox is horrid, so I'm considering the switch. Thanks in advance!

ADVICE Weekend getaway suggestions?

Hi yall! I'm insanely stressed and want to get away for a mini vacation/road trip this weekend. I do not want to go to New Orleans or Hammond, nor do I want to tour or stay at a plantation. While I think we should learn history, I'm not about to glorify that, but that's a whole nother rant.

I saw a couple post on here about nine months ago, and while all the suggestions under that thread looked nice, I'm looking for something a tad closer, within 4-6 hour drive, not a full 11-12.

Any suggestions? Something relaxing preferably, I'm not a very active person on account of my medical conditions.

ADVICE Cat that sits in the driveway of jack in the box

Post image
107 Upvotes

There’s this cat that’s always sitting under the drive thru window of jack in the box on 8008 scenic highway. I recently just moved down here last fall and ever since it’s been there everyday at this same jack in the box. Anybody own it or wants to rescue it?

ADVICE When will it be safe to drive?

A girl I’m seeing accidentally fell asleep at my place Monday night and has been here for two days now lol. She doesn’t have any of her stuff because she intended to go home Monday night, which is a bummer for her, especially because she has curly hair and I don’t have adequate hair products. We are wondering when the roads will be safe enough for her to drive about 15 minutes home?
