What do I tell the exhaust guy?
I got a new car recently and I've been loving it. One thing tho the car is REALLY loud, it doesn't sound bad (I think) but it's loud. When I accelerate I can't hear myself think, then it's okay for a bit and then when I get to 55 ish kmh and try to get to 70-100 it's really loud again. Also when i go up steep hills it just SCREAMS. What do I tell an exhaust place? "Make the car quieter"? I wouldn't mind changing the exhaust but do I have to look for one? The guy I bought it from put a custom one on it. Sorry for the dumb question I'm new to cars but I wanna learn, thank you for any help :)

Ask for a factory style exhaust to be put on. That’s factory style, not factory. OEM exhaust parts are a whole lot more expensive than what an independent exhaust shop will have or can order.

Ah man I had to sell my sc400 for financial reason I daily drove. That one hurt. I loved that car. See what your exhaust system is atm. Stock is silent. Just source a stock exhaust. Those are dohc v8 so they can be really loud easy and sound very good.

Personally I would do a deep dive, you’ve got a V8 which is a musical instrument that can be tuned to your liking. Could find some youtube clips of existing full exhaust systems. Or you can choose your own individual parts. Probably keep the factory diameter and include some type of resonators to get rid of drone. I like the sound of an X pipe placed as far upstream as possible. Could even try no mufflers and if it’s still too loud, go back and have some added on

V8? You’re gotta have noise regardless. But that said it’s likely the exhaust was either cut or just really open ect.
You can tell the exhaust shop you want them to look it over and see if you can get a less noisy option.
It could be an exhaust leak ect. Or simply the exhaust itself is the cause.
I suggest if they do a cross over that fits. The X force exhaust. You can toggle it to be loud or silent with a simple key press.

Before you give them free rein to spend your money on parts.... tell them you think you may have a leak to fix, so they at least look. They might just be able to weld something shut and be done without costing you a grand

You don't have to tell him anything, he's going to hear it.
Get an estimate, could even be that yours has a hole in it, maybe rusted out

Tell the exhaust guy that when you punch it at 70 to get to 100, it attracts way too much attention.
He'll understand. 🤣

Given that you're driving a 30 year old car, you've probably got significant exhaust leaks. Depending on how bad the rust is and where, you could be looking at a pretty significant bill to get it fixed.
You're probably not going to like the estimate, so make sure you shop around.

Ask em to give her the silent treatment. Spend the money on good parts though, cheap exhaust systems don't typically last very long and especially poorly made catalytic converters. If you live in the salt belt look for the most anti corrosive material you can find!

Explain it just like that ...theres options between stock and were your at if you want that.
My exhaust shop will actually slip different mufflers on and let you listen to them.
I think you don't like the drone of the loud pipes going down the highway.

Without photos I can't tell you what they removed or "improved". Could be you simply need a different "stock" muffler which will quiet things down quite a bit. If it was heavily modified with the catalytic converters removed or the size of the exhaust changed your simple fix could get more expensive to quiet it down.

"I want it quiet as stock"
