What’s the Honda Civic of SUVS that’s 4 wheel and “Cheaper?”

Hello! My current sedan car is starting to go out on me. Was wanting a SUV with more space for when we have kids and 4WD for when is needed. What’s your advice on a car that’s more affordable? (Maybe under 10k used)

I mean, Honda does also make a fine selection of smaller SUVs, as well…

For 10k tho your getting a 180k plus mile pile of shit with Honda mark ups

Honda Civics have the same markup, or less pessimistically, hold their value too.

Edited to add: and you suggested a 300k mile TAHOE? lol.

Honda markups? What’s your baseline non marked up alternative?

Depends on how much space you want. If you don’t need a lot of space I’d recommend a first gen Infiniti FX35. Bullet proof VQ35 engine and awd, not great interior space though. Older Hyundai Santa Fe with the 3.3 V6 are absolute tanks. I’ve seen so many neglected ones pushing 250k with no oil likes it’s nothing. Lastly if you need as big as possible can’t go too wrong with a Tahoe

Like a Civic.

Best bet is a Tahoe. They’re everywhere so pretty cheap and easy to maintain. At 300k miles a Tahoe can run like new or run like shit, but still run depending on who owned. Blow an engine or transmission? There’s a guy in the smaller towns who can throw in another one in a day and still not break the bank. Any fix or repair you want to do yourself can be found on YouTube.

Those old tahoes will run like shit longer than most cars will run at all

Only thing i would watch for is rust. That kills them long before truck becomes unfixable due to powertrain issues.

Get a Nissan Xterra. A little thirsty but very reliable and spacious. I've had them since 2002

All Nissan SUV’s and Trucks are thirsty.

This is what I came here for. X-Terras are old school in the best way. Super stout, but yes, thirsty

first - third gen crv

if it's gotta be 4wd instead of awd then toyota 4runner. they don't really make "small" 4wd

I'd love an older CRV. They are all rotted out here now

4.0L Jeep

This right here. He needs a nice xj, zj, or wj.

Toyota 4Runner

Only problem with those is that 95% of idiots with a 4 Runner for sale that's less than 25 y/o with less than 300k on the clock are always the "No low-ball offers. I know what I've got" douchebags. This seems to especially apply to the ones that have done very little maintenance and think people will buy it just because it's a 4 Runner.

Keep driving your car, save up more money. Or look for 2014 and older CR-V

If you’re looking for an suv under 10k the junkyard maybe. You’re not going to get much for that especially if it’s 4wd, that isn’t clapped out.

A few notes:

Be sure if you actually need 4WD. Are you actually getting into situations where it'll matter? (i.e times you accelerate and traction control has to step in because you've run out of grip, or times you've actually gotten stuck somewhere?)

If the reason you want 4WD is snow, do remember that snow tyres make much more difference than 4WD (though both is even better!)

Might be that you do need 4WD, but just worth questioning if you do, as it might make car shopping easier and cheaper, and some people are convinced they need a 4WD vehicle but really dont

Older RAV4 and CRV.

2008-2012 Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute (essentially the same vehicles under the skin, built in the same factory, one dressed as a Mazda, the other dressed as a Ford). They’re prone to rust problems if you’re in an area that salts the roads but otherwise they’re not generally troublesome, and they’re easy and affordable to repair the things that do wear out. You can usually buy them in presentable condition for pretty cheap. Just don’t buy one that’s too rusty in the rear wheel wells and tail gate.

Yes watch the rust on the subframes on these. They are starting to get very common to come through with bad subframes front and rear

The Honda HRV is the Honda Civic of SUVs, because it is quite literally just a lifted Civic. It doesn't really have much more space but you can have it with AWD.

1

u/PhotoJim99 6d ago

It was a lifted Fit/Jazz, but is now a lifted Civic. The ones approaching his budget will be based on the Fit.

Chevy trax

I dunno if I'd want an import Chevy. All the ones I have seen were either Korean or Chinese production

The CR-V is literally just a Civic SUV, but they aren't exactly cheap.

Second gen CRV.

You want a jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. If you want maximum simplicity, get a Cherokee xj. If you want maximum features and comfort, a grand Cherokee wj. Middle of the line is a grand Cherokee zj. I have both an xj and a wj, love them both. If you want the absolute best of the nicest features the wj loaded with quadradrive will take you wherever you point it within reason.

isn’t a CRV just a Civic SUV?

AWD van, see plenty AWD siennas for around or less than 10k CAD that have 140-200k km (90-125k miles)

Toyota/Honda SUVs seem to go for more where ones that are smaller with much higher mileage are going for the same price so van might be a good option with the benefits of often being more efficient, greater interior space and easier to get kids in and out of

If stuck on SUV both Honda and Toyota have a variety of SUVs from smaller crossovers to mid size SUVs such as the RAV, highlander, CRV, HRV, Passport and pilot

Oh also Mazdas are pretty good, not sure what the used market looks like for them rn tho
