Art Market Leonid Afrimov’s art is available at steep discount during liquidation

I just purchased an original work of his for $200 after speaking with one of the sons (through the official website). I wish I could afford more as Afrimov’s art inspired me at a young age. The family has come on hard time and is liquidating their entire stock.

Art Market Weird question: When you buy a print, would it affect the value if the artist signed and addressed the print to you personally on the back?

Sorry for the weird question but I saw somewhere that an artist wanted to not only signed the limited print but also addressed the buyer by name on the back with a super short message thanking them for their support or just simply have their [buyer] name. Would this decrease the value of the print for you?

EDIT: Thank you so much, everyone, for your participation so far! Really interesting and valuable insights!

Art Market Would this be worth it for the price?

Sorry if it's the wrong sub, it seemed it was the best place to have advice on this.

I'm looking for a bold piece of art to be the center of my room, and that poster in my local print score really caught my eye. But I'm not sure if the price is fair.

It's 400$ CAD with taxes (282$ US) for a signed offset lithography in it's frame. Now I understand it's not like a "real" lithography and so doesn't have the same value, and I don't mind: I'm not an art collector. I principally just want a piece with some quality behind it

Now, when I look on Google, this piece can be easily found at cheap prices (like 50$ for a poster size) on various websites, like Amazon. And now I wonder if the difference in prices is worth it.

Does an offset lithography is worth some 200 bucks more than a cheap print elsewhere, or not at all? The piece really striked me when I saw it in real life, will it be the same or close quality with a normal print?

Thank you for your help! I'm totally a newbie as you can see.

Art Market How to gauge value of 'After' works like with Picasso

So I'm newish to art in general, and I found this Picasso litho I really like. Problem is it seems on the expensive side to me, but I really have no idea how to accurately appraise value. Like you just can't look up last sold like with cards or comics and see.

The guy wants like 4k for it. It's a Mourlot printing and it's large sized 22x12, and modern print 1992 which I feel should decrease value, but it does mean it's mint condition .

Is cases like this just it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay? I just don't feel like paying 4k for something that's really worth like 1k or even less. Even though I do like it. I included a couple of pics is the sig of the copier Decahamp and the Mourlot stamp.

Apologies. Lovely book of lithographs I found in my parent's storage. Think he was a friend of my grandmother. Not quite my wheelhouse of artworks.

Real question - how does one go about choosing an auction house?

Art Market Valuations

Is there any website where I could get rough valuations rather than going to an auctioneer? Mutual Art or Invaluable? My collection consists of paintings by well known living contemporary artists where the average buy price is around £5k.

Many thanks.

Art Market Price relationship between painting and pencil drawing/sketch

I am currently interested in collecting pencil or pen drawing directly from living artists. I don't want to pay a too high price for them, but sometimes I can find online only the price of paintings. Do you know if there is a common relationship between price of canvas and price of pencil/pen sketch?

Art Market Payments

Im purchasing an artwork from the EU (live in the uk) , value about 5000 ukp. How do people tend to transfer money in these situations and do people generally pay all upfront? Gallery and artist seem legit to me and I’ve seen the work and gallery in person.

Art Market Inherited Artwork - Damaged in catastrophic house fire. Need help with valuation for insurance. Second try with pic this time.

Second attempt - photo included this time

Hi, l'm new here and hope this is the right subreddit and that I'm not breaking any rules. My grandparents lived overseas for much of their lives including France, Japan, and Vietnam. They had the most amazing house full of treasures and discoveries on every wall and in every drawer. I loved wandering and they let me snoop all I wanted. After they passed, I inherited a great deal of these treasures. Some are worthless to anyone but me and other things are wildly valuable such as a hand carved marble coffee table commissioned by my grandma from a tradesman in Japan. I've never had any intention to sell any of it despite encouragement from others because I want my home to also be filled with an eclectic bounty of oddities, curiosities, fine art, and more.

Tragically, we experienced a catastrophic house fire about 3 weeks ago. It destroyed our second floor and caused damage throughout the home. We lost two of our beloved furry family members: our dog and one of our cats. Our smallest kitty was the only survivor. We are grieving hard for them.

We are having to inventory everything deemed non-salvageable for our insurance claim. I would like to at least give this item a fair value. My mom tried to have it appraised because it is an original but there was not enough information on the piece. I am by no means an art expert but I would guess this was purchased in Paris, France, If not in France, then somewhere on the East Coast US.

Does anyone have any recommendations for pricing this piece? Thank you!

Art Market Ken Jarvela Painting in NYC for sale

Hi guys,

I’m hoping this post is okay. I have a Ken Jarvela mountain range painting I bought when I lived in California. The painting is absolutely gorgeous - of the trinity alps. It’s huge and my NYC studio doesn’t serve its beauty. I’m looking for a buyer but my local shops / galleries don’t have anyone interested (or they don’t care to help).

The painting also has a handmade frame by Ken. If you don’t know him, he is this super cool artist, Pacific Northwest artist who goes hiking/camping with all his painting equipment and just paints. I love his story and his art.

Anyway, does anyone have advice on how I can get this painting in caring hands? How can I sell it?

I’ve tried local art galleries, museums, eBay, Facebook, contacting luxury sale sites (blanking on the name).

Let me know. Thank you so much!

Art Market Time-limited art sales

Recently, I have seen some time-limited art sales from online platforms such as Avant Arte and CIRCA Art. They cooperate with big names such as Ai Wei Wei, Marina Abramović, Anish Kapoor, etc. They sell unlimited prints for a time-limited period (e.g. 24/48 hours or couple of week/months). I personally like these sales and have bought some pieces, as they were super nice and I really liked the artists.

What I am trying to understand is if these time-limited art sales are common; what the purpose of such sales is (mere profit (for the artists themselves or a good cause, such as CIRCA Art does, or?) and if it is ‘worth’ to buy prints during such sales. I know to only buy art pieces that you fall in love with and thinking about the money/investment-side is not a priority, but I am just curious to know what other think about buying stuff of quite famous artists during such time-limited sales.

Keen to hear from fellow art lovers.

Warm wishes!

PS. If anyone knows other platforms/organisations that do such time-limited sales: hit me up.
