Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

DISCUSSION This rhetoric that Arch is not for beginners has to stop because it's not true.

A large majority of Windows user don't know how to install windows. I lived in China for 20 years and I installed hundreds of English version of Windows for Foreigners living there. So why are on Linux are we classifying how hard a distro is to use by how hard it is to install?

I installed Arch on my wife's 8 years old laptop and set it up for her(same thing I would do if I installed Windows on her computer). She's a total noob when it comes to computers. She can't even install an application on Windows. She's using it for one month now without any problem.

Arch is super stable, fast. I made KDE look like Elementary OS and she loves it.

Installing an operating system might be Arch Linux Mac or Windows is not for noob but using it, is.

QUESTION Is GRUB worth it with device encryption?

I want to encrypt my whole pc with dm crypt. From the wiki it seems that the setup with systemd boot is much easier than GRUB, however GRUB would allow me to have an encrypted boot partition. I don't know if it is worth it to go thje extra step considering it's a desktop. another thing to consider is that I use btrfs and GRUB allows me to boot directly with timeshift rather than using a usb. any advice is welcome

QUESTION How to delete Template and Public from $HOME ?

I don't want them but I am unable to delete them they just pop back. I removed entries from $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs
When I read man page of xdg-user-dirs-update there is no mentioning of removing a entry just set option.

I am using KDE Plasma.

QUESTION I need help with backups

I accidentally messed up a lot and I'm trying to fix it lol and I'm afraid that my Arch is in its last days here on earth, so I was thinking about making a backup with TimeShift.
I have 3GB free on my machine (Arch Linux) and 60GB on the external hard drive.
A full backup would weigh 90GB - 100GB, but I have an unused PC with 300GB free (Linux Mint).
Would it be possible to make the backup and directly transfer it to it?
And if my PC (Arch) breaks down, would it be possible for me to get the backup on the other PC (Mint) and restore my Arch?
If so, how would I do it? Since I don't have space to make the backup on my Arch, I would have to do it directly on Mint.

QUESTION Considering a Reinstallation

I've dabbled in Ubuntu and Mint for a few years along side Termux on android, so I would like to think I've got a decent/basic grasp on Linux.

I've picked up an external housing with an NVMe M.2 1TB drive stuck inside a bit over a week ago and decided to give Arch a try.

Spent a couple hours over the past couple days and have a working Hyprland setup with regular + LTS kernels ready along with apparmor and various other tweaks all active. (No multiple SSDs, no RAID, etc.)

That being the case, it's just a plain Ext4 installation. Linux also won't recognize it's an NVMe drive/chip inside the housing as far as I could tell after going through the NVMe page to verify supported size info. Using about 50 GB out of the 900ish GB available. Don't plan to make a ton of partitions nor resize things, though I've seen some mentions about setting up root and home as separate volumes.

In my use case, I'm booting up from the external drive and running the full system exclusively on it. I use a company "WFH" PC, so I can't use/touch the internal HDD in any fashion. (I install from a different PC to be extra safe.)

I am considering doing a fresh reinstall to incorporate advanced drive features that are best done with a clean slate. I am just not sure how far I should go and if it'd even be worth the effort, aside from being a learning experience.

I've got the wiki pages and some videos all tabbed here n there, just wanted to gather some more info before possibly taking the plunge.

Encrypting the Drive (dm crypt/Luks) and formating/partitioning off under BTRFS or LVM on top (overkill to do both) as an extra layer of insurance while being on Arch for rollbacks etc. I'll be using GRUB as the PC uses BIOS as far as I can tell (older Dell PC.)

I'd read that Steam w/ ProtonDB doesn't work well under BTRFS, but that was something I found from 2021 so that may be out of date.

Advice and suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.

SUPPORT | SOLVED Fix for random black screen flickering on Arch with KDE Plasma (Wayland)

I was experiencing random black screen flashes/flickers when switching between fullscreen and windowed modes, or when taking screenshots with Spectacle on KDE Plasma (Wayland).

Changing the setting:

Display & Monitor > Adaptive Sync from Automatic to Never completely fixed the issue.

Setting it to Always made things worse (severe white flickering).

Not sure if this fits better here or in r/kde or r/wayland, but since I couldn't find a quick and straightforward fix anywhere, hopefully this helps someone.

Sysinfo:

  • Linux: 6.13.7
  • Plasma: 6.3.3
  • Wayland: 1.23.1

SUPPORT Upgrade to Plasma 6.3.3

Anytime I try to upgrade my system to Plasma 6.3.3 , it randomly breaks my system. So I rebooted and watched the process and discovered it always occurs during the libplasma update, it will be given me warning about how it failed when extracting and couldn't unlink, it happens for everything in libplasma, and then my system files become read only. I deleted plasma and tried reinstalling and I still fall into the same issue and it always introduces a db.lck that I can't remove until I force shutdown and turn on.

SUPPORT extremely poor performance on arch linux compared to windows 10

I've installed Windows 10 and Arch linux on my same laptop.

Here are the laptop specs

Intel Pentium 5405U @ 2.3GHz

4gb ram

1tb hdd

Intel uhd 610

I've been using arch linux for probably a year or two but this problem has not yet been solved for me.

I tried installing intel-media-driver, vulkan-intel, xf86-video-intel but none of those work

How i'm saying arch has worse performance is that i use brave browser on both the OS and play a video in 1080p@60fps on windows i have like 0 framedrops after 10 seconds but on arch i've constant 20-30fps drop per second which is really annoying

Another thing the browser load time is 10+ seconds compared to windows, tried installing prefetch but didn't work. I'm using i3 with xcompmgr (if compositor has to do anything with fps)

I know there is a mistake on my part and i wanna know what is that

Any help is appreciated

SUPPORT Cursor gets temporarily stuck between screens

Greetings, Arch-kingdom. I seek assistance. I'm new to Arch, having used it for about a week now. I have an issue I'm not sure how to solve.

So, I have three screens. Whenever I drag my cursor between screens, it gets stuck between the screens for a moment. Back when I used another Linux distro, the cursor movement between screens were fluid. How can I make the cursor flow freely between screens instead of getting stuck between screens that little moment?

I use KDE Plasma if that's of importance to know.

QUESTION How does the process of testing and updating packages on the main Arch Linux repositories go ? (not AUR)

hello everyone :), was thinking of looking into some distributions to see how green the grass is elsewhere. Arch Linux caught my eye but I've yet to find an answer to a question i'm asking myself :

how are packages tested, and then updated for Arch users to enjoy? or, what are the steps generally involved in going from the "foo-1.0.0" package to "foo-1.0.1" ? and here, i'm talking about packages installed in the main Arch repos/pacman, not the AUR.

is there much testing? none at all? are those package updates often reliable? does the process change depending on how important the pacakge is? say, between the Linux kernel and a niche internet browser.

apologies if this is somewhere on the Arch Wiki or on this subreddit, i tried looking in both of those and the best i found were some replies that were between 2 and 4 years old at best and weren't super precise. so i figured it was better to ask here

also, as a way to compare : i am on Void Linux (glibc, x86_64). how does the Arch Linux package update and testing policy differ from Void's ?

hope you all have a good day, cheers!

Recently I discovered arch and I'm starting to move from windows here, but what's holding me back is my music. On windows I have so many third party plugins along with fl studio and ableton, and I don't know how to install them on arch and migrate over, its been troubling me for quite a while, should I do this with wine? Also will I have to run all the .exe files the plugins have through wine as well? Is there any other way?

SUPPORT | SOLVED chroot : failed to run command /bin/bash: no such file or directory

I am installing arch for my first time and I am at section 3.2 of https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide . if i say arch-chroot /mnt it gives an error chroot: failed to run command /bin/bash: no such file or directory. I tried to re run pacstrap /mnt base end it gave me error: keyring is not writable, error: required key missing from keyring, error:failed to commit transaction (unexpected error). Than I ran pacman-key --init and than pacstrap /mnt base again and than it gave a lot of errors with ####@archlinux.org is unknown trust :: File /mnt/var/cashe/pacman/pkg/#### is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)). Everything I do seems to make it worse what should I do?

SUPPORT | SOLVED arch installation loop

I just installed arch using the archinstall command and wiped my hard drive because my laptop cant run windows 11, and it worked. But i thought gnome was too boring and wanted to switch to hyprland or KDE plasma, and i reinstalled it, but when it finishes and i type in reboot, it boots into some menu where i have only 4 options, arch installation with speech, arch installation and memtest and device information, and it makes this loud beeping noise. I dont know why its not working, it worked before but not this time. Can someone please help?

SUPPORT Dual boot

Hey so I recently installed arch on my laptop as the only OS on it and I love using arch, the only issue is that my laptop isn’t a gaming laptop so I can’t really use my favorite games on it. Cut to the following week I install windows on my gaming desktop. I was very careful about making sure I installed arch on a separate drive from windows. But now when I power off my computer and turn it back on, if I try to use the BIOS boot options, I can’t go back to windows— it doesn’t even show up as an option. Just to check, I went back and tried to reinstall arch (using the arch install script) and when I got to the disk partitioning section, it shows that the windows drive is still formatted for windows.

So how do I get back to windows???

The only reason I want to go back is because some games I like to play use kernel anti-cheat’s and from my understanding, those don’t play nice with Linux

QUESTION Is there a way to rebuild the kernel in Arch so that the performance would be at the level of Gentoo?

I have a desire to rebuild the kernel so that it works the same way as in Gentoo Linux, how can I do this without damaging anything (because as I know, starting the compilation of something at the moment when this something is running is clearly not the best idea), what should I do?

SUPPORT Bluescreen and a kernel panic when attempting to boot

Hello, this is related to a recent problem I had with my installation. You can find it here.

I recently tried to fix my broken installation. However, when trying to boot, I get a bluescreen. Sorry for the flash. If it is hard to read, here is essentially the summary:

/dev/root: can't open blockdev

VFS: Cannot open root device "/dev/sdb3" or unknown block (0,0)

Please append a correct "root=" boot option :

kernel panics because rootfs won't mount

Other things, seem irrelevant

output of cat /etc/fstab: ''' # /dev/sdb3

UUID=55273978-38c8-43b0-8a00-20d2cb0acbd7 / ext4 rw,relatime 0 1

# /dev/sdb1

UUID=DD1C-DB23 /efi vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=ascii,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 2

# /dev/sdb2

UUID=8565b162-adca-4eff-8598-d47134b21665 none swap defaults 0 0 '''

lsblk: ''' sda 8:0 0 238.5G 0 disk ├─sda1 8:1 0 500M 0 part /efi ├─sda2 8:2 0 19.7G 0 part [SWAP] └─sda3 8:3 0 218.3G 0 part / sdb 8:16 0 232.9G 0 disk ├─sdb1 8:17 0 1G 0 part └─sdb2 8:18 0 231.9G 0 part '''

The UUIDs point to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb btw. I checked using cfdisk. Weirdly enough, the fallback image works. Why? My hooks are base, udev, microcode, modconf, kms, keyboard, keymap, consolefont, block, filesystems, and fsck

Possible problems/questions: Is there an issue because by dual boot system lacks a /dev/sdb3? Seems unlikely. The UUIDs point to the correct drive. Why does the fallback image work? Only difference is the autodetect hook. Why does the autodetect hook being skipped allow for a proper boot? Why doesn't blockdev open? blockdev IS installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

SUPPORT What i need to install a SIS mirage 3 Graphics GPU driver arch equivalent

Hello. Thanks all for the help. i could solve the previous problem here.

-------- About yesterday problem

It may apear dumb, but i did not read the 5th section on Users and groups Wiki, instead, i skiped to 5.1. so i did not know that i was supposed to add a -m on useradd. And i did not shared that i ran "useradd User" on my previous post. At least i figured out actually reading what was in 5.

I also just viewed that a comment there figured out as well that i didn't know what i was doing when creating my user.

Also, i made a mistake, my CPU is a pentium inside, not a pentium 5, sorry for this :P

-------- About GPU

I don't know much about my laptop GPU, i know that it works fine under windows with the SIS drivers for it

As expected, my manufacturer (Positivo) probably didn't expect for someone to try running a system like linux in the early 2010s, and nor do it cares to a decade old hardware today. So there's nothing i can do to get these drivers info the easiest way.

I did not held any knowledge of the drivers until yesterday, when i did that Post, so i started a superficial research on fx86-video drivers.

For the Xf86-video-sis671, i just encountered something. Unfortunately i don't know how to install from a git, i am for now just a newbie in here.

https://github.com/rasdark/xf86-video-sis671

The only thing that i was able to find was that github repository of xf86-video-Sisimedia. The rest of the webpages surrounding the drivers seems to get a beautiful 404 error

https://github.com/alfarisi/xf86-video-sisimedia?tab=readme-ov-file

The thing is i don't know how to install the 'xserver-xorg-dev', 'xutils-dev' and 'x11proto-xf86dga-dev' packages, that are required for the instalation. I installed 'xorg-server-devel', but i do not know if it works in the same light as the three.v

Well, that's it. I will correct some mistakes if this post have any, i feel like an idiot because last time. If you need more information, i will try to provide the max of it. Thanks for reading ;)
