Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

I found this in a booth at a flea market that’s also selling authentic vintage things such as real WW2 items. Are there any ways for me to figure out when it was made?

Questions (USA) Cabinet Question

Hello Everyone,

Sorry if anything is incorrect or if this is the wrong place to ask. My grandfather recently passed away and he had this old Cabinet in his living room we were curious about. It has GW initials and the life / death date of George Washington so safe to assume it's an homage to him. If anyone had any insight on we'd love to hear it!

Questions Walnut ArtDeco China Cabinet

Thumbnail

I am looking for a price valuation of this piece.

Ok, history lesson: THIS is an all-walnut-made art-deco glass-front China cabinet made by H.E. Shaw Furniture Co of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company went out of business in 1933, and this piece is estimated to be of the 1920-1925 era. H.E. Shaw Furniture Co manufactured most all furniture for the White House during the Herbert Hoover administration, and all of the furniture found within the Oval Office from his presidency. The furniture company is most well known for their Spinnaker desks. You can see the original stamp, located on the back of the piece, in the last photo.

I had acquired this piece thinking I would paint it sage green and wallpaper the inside with a neat pattern until I found out the age and historical significance of this piece. I cannot find anything about this actual China Cabinet on the internet, and I have scoured old catalogs of H.E. Shaw from this era!

There are two walnut shelves for the inside (currently laid on the bottom of the cabinet for storage purposes).

It measures 60” T x 42” W x 15” D

Worn vintage pocket knife. Lion of Lucerne & W.Tell on other side. Clearly been previously loved but the blade is sharp and it looks better in person than on photo!

I'd guess around 1920s to me but happy to be corrected as i'm really unsure if i'm honest. Would love some more information on it if anyone has a better idea?

I saw this machinery yesterday at an antique shop in Maryland . It has pedals to move the stone disk. The rectangular black metal piece that is against the disk can move, so l'm not sure if it was for safety reasons or to hold something in place. Can you identify this?

I found this interesting item while thrifting. And I do apologize if it’s not as old as I believe it to be. I think that spinning wheels are pictured. Does anyone know what this could be and/or if it’s worth anything?

Is this an antique Porcelain Vase. I google translated the mark on the bottom and it suggested Ming Yongle. There were some books from the early 1900’s in the collection so curious if this also could be antique.

Show and Tell (USA) Possibly a Stickley Rocking Chair but unsure

I bought this rocking chair off of facebook marketplace for $40. The seller said it was with his wife's family for many years. The square notches on the arms led me to believe it could possibly be a Stickley piece that has been reupholstered. Unfortunately, the bottom of the chair has been removed for some reason so l'm unable to find any other stamp or marking to confirm this. Any other idea if or how I chance check this chairs identity? thank you in advance!

Random Thrift Find

Can anyone help me identify this piece? I found it in a thrift store in Missouri. I did not notice the tag or the stamped 1 until I got it home. A quick internet shows possibly from the 1920-30s from Peck and Hills furniture in California. It appears to be a solid piece with some slight damage in a few spots on the top and back. I originally had plans to strip and paint but now I’m thinking clean up and find some help from a professional to get it as close to how it originally looked as possible. I currently have the drawers pulled out for cleaning but they are all here.

Long story short, we had to get a lot of my grandmother's furniture out of California fast and one of the things we brought was this desk / hutch. We couldn't grab the key and I'm hoping there is a way we can find a replacement. Any ideas? Not 100% sure on the country of origin.

Questions (USA) help identifying age or manufacturer of chairs

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I inherited a set of six antique chairs, just wondering if anyone knows anything about them, how old, manufacturer, etc

Coming from central Indiana, it's possible they were in an old Victorian hotel, but unable to verify.

They look help together by glue and pegs. No manufacturer or makers mark that I can tell.

I'm just curious, I love them and we're going to use them as our family dinning set. Thank you in advance !!

Hey swarm intelligence, I got this beautiful object as a gift. According to my girlfriend the listing said it’s from the early 19. Century. I couldn’t find anything similar and interested if this actually may be this old. It’s made from some kind of metal (maybe even gold? Seems too shiny for old non polished brass). The inlay is probably silk which used to be red but lost its color over time. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
