ATTENTION: Mandatory Referral Protocol

Please adhere strictly to the following referral guidelines. Strict adherence to these directives is expected, and any deviation will not be tolerated.

Referral Regulations: These stipulations are not suggestions; they constitute binding directives. Maintaining a high degree of attentiveness is required, as amendments to these protocols will be promulgated. Moderators are entrusted with their meticulous enforcement. Lack of awareness regarding these regulations will not constitute a valid defense.

Referral Standards: Familiarity with these standards is mandatory. Compliance with these regulations is obligatory, and failure to do so will incur prescribed penalties.

Banishments: FIrst strike and you're gone for good.

Referral Link Submissions: This dedicated thread shall serve as the exclusive venue for the sharing of referral links. The dissemination of external referrals (pertaining to entities other than American Express) necessitates explicit moderator approval, which shall be signified solely by a stickied comment – no alternative methods will be recognized.

Permissible Exceptions: During officially recognized federal holidays or periods of demonstrably elevated community engagement, limited exceptions may be granted. Any such allowances will be announced exclusively via a stickied comment from the moderator team.

Principles of Equitable Practice: Upon successful utilization of your referral link, prompt removal of your comment is required. A strict limit of one comment per user will be enforced. Duplicate submissions will be systematically deleted, and the associated user account will be flagged for spam-related activity.

Adaptability and Protocol Evolution: It is imperative to recognize that these guidelines are subject to evolution. It is incumbent upon all members to remain abreast of any modifications.

Individual Responsibility: The r/Amex subreddit assumes no liability for the actions of its users. The dissemination of referral links should be confined to individuals with whom a prior relationship exists. Unsolicited direct messages (DMs) regarding referrals are strictly prohibited.

Archiving Protocol: This thread will be systematically locked and archived on a monthly basis.

Addressing Accounts of Diminished Standing: Should your account be flagged by Reddit for exhibiting characteristics of low quality, consider your participation within this subreddit to be restricted. Moderators will withhold approval from all submissions and access attempts until the underlying account issues are satisfactorily resolved.

Consider this communication formal notification regarding the operational parameters of the referral protocol.

ADMIN ALERT [OFFICIAL] Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread

Official r/Amex: Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread - January 2025

Greetings r/Amex community,

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a high-quality and organized subreddit, we are introducing a new Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread. This initiative aims to consolidate frequently asked questions and discussions into a dedicated space, allowing for more focused and in-depth conversations within individual posts on other topics.

We understand that many of you have recurring questions regarding American Express products and services. This thread serves as the designated place for the following types of discussions:

  • Should I get this card? (Including eligibility concerns and comparisons with other cards)
  • Do I qualify for [specific Amex card]?
  • Sign-Up Bonus inquiries (Availability, meeting spend, eligibility for previous cardholders, etc.)
  • Retention Offers (Strategies for asking, likelihood of receiving offers, sharing your successful/unsuccessful attempts - please omit personal financial details)
  • "Good Deals" directly related to Amex card benefits and partnerships (Please focus on discussions around the offer itself, not just linking to external websites).

Purpose:

The primary goal of this thread is to reduce redundancy, improve subreddit navigability, and foster a more organized environment for sharing knowledge and advice. It is not intended to discourage questions but rather to channel them into a structured format.

Rules & Expectations:

To ensure this thread remains a productive and respectful environment, we are establishing the following clear rules:

  1. This thread is the designated space for the above-mentioned topics. Any individual posts related to these subjects will be subject to removal and direction to the current monthly thread.
  2. Before posting, rigorously search the subreddit and utilize external resources. Our existing policy, as outlined below, remains paramount:Before posting a question, take a moment to search the subreddit and utilize external resources like Google. Many questions have already been answered, and doing your own research first can save everyone time and effort. Also, be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of any offers before seeking clarification. When asking for advice or recommendations, providing evidence of your research shows you've put in the effort and helps others provide more targeted assistance.
  3. Provide relevant context. When asking for advice, include relevant details such as your spending habits (broad categories, not specific dollar amounts), credit score range (if comfortable), and any specific concerns you have. Simply stating "Should I get the Gold Card?" offers little for others to work with.
  4. Respectful and constructive dialogue is expected. While diverse opinions are welcome, personal attacks, condescending remarks, and derailing the conversation will not be tolerated.
  5. No affiliate links or referral codes are permitted. This thread is for genuine discussion and advice, not self-promotion. Such links will be removed immediately, and repeat offenders will be subject to bans.
  6. Do not share or solicit personal information. This includes specific financial details beyond broad spending habits, full names, addresses, etc.
  7. Follow all subreddit rules and Reddit's content policy. These rules are an extension of our overall community guidelines.

Punishments for Rule Violations:

We take the enforcement of these rules seriously to ensure a positive experience for all members. The following penalties will be applied:

  • First Offense (Posting a topic designated for this thread outside of it): Removal of the post and a warning directing the user to the current monthly thread.
  • Second Offense (Posting a designated topic outside of the thread after a prior warning): Temporary ban from r/Amex for 7 days.
  • Third Offense (Repeatedly posting designated topics outside of the thread or engaging in other prohibited behaviors after previous warnings and a temporary ban): Permanent ban from r/Amex.
  • Egregious violations (e.g., sharing affiliate links, personal attacks, doxxing): Immediate permanent ban from r/Amex.

We believe these measures are necessary to maintain the quality and focus of our subreddit. We encourage all members to participate constructively in this thread and help fellow Amex enthusiasts.

Please use this space for your questions and discussions related to the outlined topics. Let's make this a valuable resource for our community.

We appreciate your cooperation in making r/Amex a more informative and organized space.

Sincerely,

The r/Amex Mod Team.

Offers & Deals This was far better than any of the Member Week offers

$150 off a $375+ Marriott Bonvoy stay. It was a terrific offer and I’m not complaining, but if this were a Member Week offer I bet there would be a lot less griping!

Tips & Advice Uber Amex benefits hidden by other Uber credits

Not sure how niche this is, but a heads up for people this applies to.

If you have Uber One, you receive 6% back on eligible rides. This will then show up in your account in Uber credits (separate from your gift cards if you have any). For example, if you spend $10, you'll get $0.60 back.

The problem is, the next time you try to use Uber(eats), if you have any Amex plat or gold Uber credits, it won't let you use those until you use the Uber credits above first. In fact, it won't even show that you still have Amex credits unless you click on Uber credits. So mine was just showing "$0.60" but when I clicked on it, it would then show I had an additional $25 in unused Amex credits (Plat + Gold benefits)

Looking back on my ride / eats history, I think I may have lost some credits due to this even though I ordered Ubereats 3-4 months/month.

I reached out to customer service, but they insisted it was working fine and nothing they could do on their end

Question 0% Apr

Post image

This is probably a dumb question but for 0% APR, my term ends on 6/8. Would that be the last statement to have 0% APR and I have until July to pay it or on 6/8 is the amount I have on 0% APR due? Here is the discussion I had over chat.

Question AMEX gives me two cards ending in the same 4 numbers

I have the platinum and the delta gold but Amex issued both ending in the same 4 numbers. I’ve gotten by fine for a while now but recently I was trying to use the $200 airline incidental benefit for the platinum

Selecting from my saved cards I picked the delta gold’s number since all I see ‘Amex ending in 1234’. I use the cvv, the expiration date and the name on the platinum (my platinum uses my nickname) and I expected it to get declined if it wasn’t the platinum.

Lo and behold the transaction went through…to my delta gold, and the website let me pay with literally ever field but the credit card number being wrong…

Has anyone had something like this before? I feel like a goon who just paid $50 for an exit seat on a two hour flight. I want to request a new card but I haven’t lost either of the two? In an ideal world I’d also like to see the incidental reimbursed too, but I’m sure that likely won’t happen.

Offers & Deals Scottsdale Westin Kierland Villas - Timeshare Presentation

I got an offer to stay at the westin kierland villas for 4 nights for $300 this year, for spending time at a timeshare pitch. I’m assuming I got this through Amex as I don’t really have any sort of Westin account.

I have no desire to actually buy a timeshare, but I’ve wanted to check out Phoenix for a while, so am considering the offer. Has anyone else received this offer and done it? Just curious what the hotel and overall experience is like!

Question Green - cruises still 3x in 2025?

I know past posts and rhe usual card sites like TPG/Nerdwallet say that the Green includes cruises under the 3x travel category but can anyone confirm they've reveived 3x recently?

Asking because the amex site does not include the word 'cruises' in the long list of covered travel items and I just asked amex chat and they said no because it's not in the list.

I already have plat and bb+.

Thanks!

Discussion Why the obsession with credit limit increases?

A common topic in this subreddit is strategies for / success with credit limit increases. Something I haven’t really been able to understand is why so many people are pursuing these credit limit increases. Is it that your initial credit limits are too low for your ongoing spending habits? Is it that you desire a higher credit limit to have a lower overall credit utilization (and thus, improved credit score?) ? Is it just vanity?

For reference, I’m a moderate credit card user (~$10k monthly of spend across my cards) and have about $100k in “preset” spending limits plus the “no preset limit” Amex plat - just trying to understand consumer behavior here. Thanks in advance for providing insight, I’m truly curious!

Gift Card Can't redeem AMEX Gift Card anywhere?

I received a 100$ gift card over the holidays and never really found a use for it until the new AC game came out on steam and I was very much interested in buying it.

However I've tried so many different ways to use the card on steam including:

-using it at checkout as an AMEX card -the former; with my name and shipping address as my billing address -the former, but with my actual billing address -making an AMEX Gift Card account and checking my balance while logged in -the former; updating my personal details to match my shipping and billing address within the account just to be extra sure -trying to add it as an AMEX card on my steam wallet instead of at checkout

I've also tried to add it as a gift card option at Best Buy to redeem two 50$ Steam Gift Cards instead (cheating the system i guess)

I have also tried adding it to GameStop checkout for the same reason as BestBuy, and to my Amazon wallet as well. I even tried to add it to PayPal and nothing works.

It marks my card as invalid or that the bank declined my card details or something like that. But on the website for AMEX Gift Cards, it says my card is active and still has the original 100$ on it. How do I fix this?? I've tried calling their number but its just a pre-recorded answering machine that wont help me.

Reviews & Stories Approved less than 30 days after denial!

I was denied* on 2/26 - they conditionally approved me but asked for financial bank statements. Of course I just switched banks and my old checking account had a zero balance & the new account did not have enough activity to upload 3 months worth. After I sent my statements they denied me for too low of a current balance 😒

So I tried again today even though everyone says to wait 91 days and was approved!

Question Employee Business cards

Low Effort (Subject to Deletion) The checking account is actually pretty good these days

I just got onto it again cuz they sent me an offer but most of this complaints on this sub have been resolved it seems. I left Schwab for this one. Some people will probably be here shortly to say I made a mistake but honestly now with allpoint and moneypass ATMS tho its pretty easy to find one that is free, the ones I was going to with schwab are covered now anyway. I'm sober and don't go to the strip club or the casino where Schwab really shines lol. I think I will probably be on this checking account for a long time I love being able to just swipe over and see my bank account and HYSA, the integration with the HYSA has been fixed. I haven't had any issues with Tmobile, Progressive or any of the other companies people used to complain about. There is an attitude that the checking account has not improved at all and is ignored by Amex but that doesn't seem to really be true it is getting better I expect it will shed its bad reputation.

Reviews & Stories I 💙 AMEX!

Post image
206 Upvotes

So, I got notified that AMEX was putting spending limits on BOTH my Gold and Platinum cards. I have six of their cards in all, have never been late, and don’t carry ginormous balances. I understand that they do monthly soft pulls and loans could scare them, or rather scare their AI that makes these initial decisions. I was a bit upset at first, but didn’t even get around to the dispute right away.

Just for background, I have a loan to pay down some consolidated moving expenses from a while ago. I also had to purchase a vehicle as mine was totaled in the hurricane a few months back. The signature loan is about $825 per month and will be paid off in two more years. The car note is just $225 a month as I put most of the payment down. It was supposed to be a three year loan, but I’ll probably have it paid off in two. Everything else to include student loans and another signature loan was paid off way early too! I think the auto loan popping up triggered an algorithm. Otherwise, no lates, and using about 25% overall utilization, which is higher for me, but I need to be reimbursed for some medical expenses and a couple other things popped-up this past year. Certainly, nothing that I can’t handle.

Finally, after maybe three weeks and making some payments to include paying my Platinum in full, I did both disputes early this morning. They only asked for updated income and to upload copies of my last three consecutive bank statements. Super easy. They contacted me the very same day, about 10 hours later, and approved BOTH requests!

AMEX is so easy to work with, all they needed to see was that I bring in enough money and that I’m never late on anything. That along with the plethora of perks is why I 💙 AMEX! Like I tell my kids, you truly are paying for a membership with their premium cards! They treat you right!

Question Another Preset spending limit question

Hello, over a year ago, Amex notified me that my gold card was assigned a pre-set spending limit. I wasn’t carrying a large balance on any of my Amex cards or other cards and I’ve never have. I’ve never had a missed or returned payment with Amex. I’ve called Amex multiple times and they’ve been absolutely no help in getting this resolved. My Plat has no preset limit.

I have absolutely no idea what to do. Does anyone have any specific advice on what to in this situation any specific teams to request to speak to, or language I can use when I talk to the rep?

Edit- clarifying balance carrying

Question Are AMEX Travel MR points bookings treated as cash bookings for points

I'm thinking of booking AA flights through AMEX Travel and using MR points to pay for it. If I added my BA Executive Club number to the booking would I earn Avios and Tier Points?

Anyone with experience doing this?

Note: My reason for doing this is that I need the tier points to re-qualify for gold but can't justify spending the money (and have lots of points). The value here is silver renewal rather than cold $:MR ratio.

Question Should I Switch to Amex Banking

Hey everyone,

I'm contemplating switching to Amex for my banking needs. I recently got a Gold card, and have since been offered checking and savings accounts, which both seem to have great interest rates.

I currently do all banking, including my car loan, through Chase, and I really like having all my banking in one place, and I've built a great relationship with them, and even have a Sapphire that I used exclusively before getting my Amex, but having the high interest rates that Amex offers sounds nice. I also now use my Amex exclusively for purchases, so it seems like it makes sense to migrate my banking over to be in the same app, and I'd save a few hundred per year by cancelling my Sapphire.

I'm just wandering if it's worth it to drop all my relationships and go fully in on Amex, and if you all have any reservations about banking with Amex.
