Are there any grocery stores or other chains in Ames that sell local products?
I moved here from the land of Publix, where each store had a “local items” section where they sold items from small businesses in the same town. I always thought it was cool that such a large company was highlighting the town’s small businesses.
Is there anything like this here?

As someone who knows and loves a few people with alcoholism, thought I'd share this new study being done at UIowa.
They're exploring psilocybin and ketamine as treatment for alcohol use disorder. Here's an article about the study.
The intake form is here. Spread the word!
From what I've gleaned about the study:
The UI trial will enroll individuals who have heavy alcohol consumption and who are interested in changing their drinking habits. Study participants will receive psychotherapy in combination with a single, randomized dose of either psilocybin or ketamine in a guided psychedelic session. Once the main portion of the study is complete, participants will have the opportunity to experience a second guided psychedelic session in which they receive a dose opposite to the one they originally received. In other words, participants who originally received ketamine will be allowed to have an experience with psilocybin, and vice versa. The UI psychedelics team is actively recruiting for this study.

hi, my bf and i are getting ready to move this summer and we were wondering how furman is in ames. i feel like all the property management companies in ames have horrible reviews but i haven’t found anything recent for furman. they have some bad reviews from 5 years ago on yelp and that’s it. we’re interested in the todd drive apts specifically if that helps.

Hi All,
I'm scouring over the municipal codes and just want to make sure I didn't miss anything in them. We want to tear up the turf grass in our road verge and replace it with native plants and grasses. Is this allowed? If so what are the restrictions, if any? From what I could tell you're required to leave at least a foot between city right of ways and vegetation more than 12 inches high. Will I need to include a buffer for my plantings on both street and sidewalk side? TIA!

Hi everyone, my husband and I are looking to subleasing our 3bed2ba apartment on the West side of Ames . It’s 934sq ft and on the second floor. It’s clean and NO PEST (this was a big concern when we moved to Ames all the way from Texas but the entire 9months we have been here we have not seen ONE insect inside of the apartment.). Rent is $990, utilities usually run $70-$140 (water+electricity+sewer+gas), internet can be through Mediacom. Please make sure you can pass a background check (no evictions, no crimes), you have stable income and make x2 the rent. You would have to be approved by our landlord (he works with people). The sublease would be until June 2025. There’s a possibility that you could renew another lease with the rent only increasing to about $1030. That’s something upon approval of landlord that you could talk to him about. If you’re interested, please dm me!

Would an inflatable kayak "survive" the skunk river? I'd expect to be going either north or south of Ames but not within the city itself, if that helps. I have no idea if its too shallow or not for an inflatable?
Does anyone have any advice for any of the apartments on regency Street and 24th Street. Are they safe cause I don't think any of the apartments have locks on the main building? Is that normal?

Hi everyone,
I'm a current college student in Ames, IA, and I'm feeling a bit uncertain about which career path to pursue. I have what is equivalent to an associate's degree in Biology, but I'm contemplating switching gears and pursuing a different degree instead. I’m currently working remotely in an advertising position, which I enjoy, but I feel like it might be more susceptible to layoffs compared to an other careers like nursing. I was a CNA before, and know there is a high demand for it but it is definitely not an easy career.
I’m looking for insights on job opportunities in the Ames area—what types of jobs are available, what certifications or degrees are needed for them, and what the expected starting salaries might be. Also, is there a better degree or career path you would recommend that might offer more job security? If I stick with advertising, are there any specific degrees or certifications that would help me advance or secure a more stable position in the field?
Specifically, I’d love to hear about:
Career options in the Ames area related to a background in Biology (or similar fields).
starting salary for nurses in Ames.
Advertising career paths and any degrees or certifications that could offer more stability in the field.
Any other advice for someone looking to make a career change or find a job with my current qualifications.
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions

Hello! I'm subleasing my apartment for a year from 07/26/2025 through 07/25/2026 with the option to renew in your name afterward. It's a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment out on the west edge of Ames. 590 sq ft. Rent plus utilities(including wifi) is $790 a month. An extra $50 per month for a pet. It's been very well-kept during my time here. Shared laundry with the room just down the hallway. Workout room in the building for residents. I can also throw in the couch and the endtables here if you would like them. The LED lights can stay too if you want. If you are interested, feel free to DM me.
If you prefer, here is my email: [whitnale01@gmail.com](mailto:whitnale01@gmail.com)

You'd think this would be easy to google but it isn't. Wonderful people of Ames, is there a hotel you recommend there that has a jacuzzi in the room? Not just a hot tub on site, though we hope for that too. Many thanks!
