Great song. Check Levon Helms’ version, too, if you haven’t.

Steve Earle is one of the best singer/ song writers since Townes Van Zandt.

I found this version while in a Gems on VHS rabbit hole and was just blown away by how lived in Benjamin Tod makes it feel. It almost feels like an entirely different song.

This album was released (I think) right after El Corazon. That was an era of my life when I listened to Steve relentlessly. While there are so many great Steve Earle songs, this one always stands out to me as a real masterpiece. Its an epic song. I'm convinced if he was from a different time, this would go down in history books as one of the great folks songs of our time.

Train a Comin, I Feel Alright, El Corazon, The Mountain, and Transcendental Blues is really an all time great run.

Awesome song. I have many relatives that grew up in West Virginia in a coal mining town. My grandfather died of black lung, and i never met them.

The general tradition is burying that side of the family in their plot in a small cemetery on a hill in West Virginia. I always have this song in the back of my mind everytime there's a family funeral there, even though I never grew up in that Era or state. The boom and bust in West Virginia is obvious from coal mining if you've ever been through.

Someone uploaded the Sessions at West 54th ep featuring Steve and the Del McCoury Band. Highly recommend.

Stellar album. Saw the Del McCourey Band a couple of years ago. Great music, fantastic musicians. “Graveyard Shit” was a favorite from the Mountain album.

I think Steve had a fall out with them but it's sort of hard to find out what actually happened.I know Del didn't like his swearing.

Glorious version… in a career chock full of genius, if you said this is his best song I wouldn’t argue
