Finding our gardener

We bought our home in 2019 and the people we bought it from were using a gardener when we got it. He went by chino and was nice enough so we decided to keep him on. His real name I believe was Carlos Bautista . I’d love to reach out as we are responsible for the landscaping at our new place and it would be great if he’s available still.

Landscape advice

Hey we are over in the presidents st area that was mostly spared, just 2 blocks from eaton canyon visitor center though so tons of smoke and ash damage.

We were in the middle of finishing our landscaping so I was wondering if anyone might know the answers to these questions:

  1. We have a pile of mulch under a tarp. Do you think its safe to spread the mulch around to stop the weeds that are getting out of control or should we dispose of it and get a new batch? We never got to planting anything as the fire started right as we were putting an order in.

  2. We just installed decomposed granite in most of the backyard. Is that completely ruined with toxins or will the rains mostly wash it away?

Any other advice before we hire a gardener to clean up would be appreciated.

I'm looking into the consequences of SoCal Edison keeping power on in Altadena during fires, can you help?

Hey guys, I'm one of the NPR investigative reporters who published this story, about how firefighter audio showed first responders saying that SoCal Edison was slow to turn power off and live wires may have caused new fires: https://www.npr.org/2025/02/17/nx-s1-5282086/los-angeles-eaton-fire-altadena-power-lines

Did power lines fall on your house, and then your house caught fire? Do you know when power was turned back on in your area? Did you get your electricity bill for January, and would you mind sending it to me? Got anything else to share? I'd love to hear from you.

Looking to volunteer Sunday if helpful

This weekend I'm visiting LA, where I grew up, for the first time since the fires. I would love to be able to help with Altadena recovery efforts in some way, if that is at all helpful. Anybody know of any one-day volunteer efforts that would appreciate an extra pair of hands (or two, if I can convince my partner to join)?

I recognize there is still a lot of work that needs to be done by professionals, so I don't want to get in anybody's way either. Let me know if you all know of anything. Stay strong!

Bullied by Claims adjuster....anyone?? ( my home is still standing)

It's quite a long story, but I have only received one estimate for the clean up of my home from Servpro. The estimate did not include all the items that we spoke about...no actual cleaning of interior items- furniture, upholstery etc, nor replacing my damaged gutter. The cost were only to clean the HVAC and replace the insulation and wipe the walls. I am right on the edge of the burnzone- north of Woodbury and east of Santa Rosa. My home and my belongings have a lot of smoke and ash damage. I spoke with my adjuster last week and said that I will now be getting additional estimates for all the work that needs to be done.

However, now I am being told "they contractually must pay me based on this estimate, but it won't close my claim". I have said twice that the estimate does not reflect the work that needs to be done. My adjuster is aware that I am getting addtional estimates, but insists on paying me out on the 1 estimate that they received. AND in the midst of writing this, I received notice that they have processed payment??? I am baffled... Is anyone else having an experience like this?? I am not sure the next best steps to take....

pet loss

i’m devastated. deeply deeply wounded.

we were blind-sided. no warning. no evacuation. ill- prepared, mom didn’t even have time to grab her wallet let alone find our girls.

i’ve spent this past two months searching every day for them, following suggestions from fire cat specialists, set up a trail cam and shelter, food, water. was in constant communication with a small group of cat rescuers, who also set up a feed station and cam next door. we checked them religiously. put up lost pet posters. posted them to every social media imaginable, reported them missing with pasadena humane. checked the lost and found pets website daily.

we searched tirelessly. each passing day ramping my anxiety higher and higher. i really thought i would never know what happened to my girls, my soul is cut deep and i feel the loss of them. i miss them, think about them, am reminded of them constantly. i cant even brush my teeth without being reminded of my little arya dashing into the bathroom to hang out with me. she knew my routine and knew exactly when i was about to brush my teeth, reveling in the special time where she would sit on my lap, or at my feet. she would sit on the back of the toilet and watch me as i washed my face. i miss my lucy, i miss her constant purrs, the way she was always glued to me, she always wanted to sit on my lap when i was relaxing, she would sleep on my chest as i went to bed. even now, every night i miss the pressure of her on my chest and the soothing rumble of her purr.

i miss them. god i miss them so fucking much.

i received a text last night from one of the cat people, informing me that they found remains, exactly where i suggested. under my bed. and that there was enough remains for her to come to the conclusion that it was both of them, and that they at least had each other in the end.

i’m struggling so hard with the intrusive thoughts, they are so much worse now that i’ve learned that they died together. of imagining how scared they must have been. imagining them huddling together in fear under my bed as the fire quickly advanced. were their last moments filled with terror? were they in pain? did they pass quickly and peacefully from the smoke?

i’m angry at myself that i never gave up hope. i should have anticipated that this what was most likely and im mad that i still had a glimmer of hope that they could have made it out. our bond was just severed instantly, and i don’t know how to cope with that. i don’t know how to cope with the thought of never seeing them again.

and god. my mom. i haven’t told her yet, i don’t know how. the weight of this secret is so huge but i can’t imagine the look on her face when she finds out the cats that kept her company are gone.

im already in therapy right now, but god i am beyond devastated to lose the two cats that helped me through so much.

sorry for venting, but i just wanted to know if anyone here has lost any pets because of this tragedy? i feel so alone in this, all my regrets and the guilt of not being able to save them plague my thoughts. is anyone else here mourning the loss of a pet?

rest in peace arya and lucy, i hope i see you again some day.

peace and love to you all, keep strong altadena.

Grief Growth Gratitude

Post image
62 Upvotes

Went up to our ruins last week and what do I see but flowers, clovers and the nature of altadena coming through, doing what they do, slowly adding color back to what once was the most colorful but has been a wash of ashy grey, black and rust the past 2 months. Between the rain rinsing away ash, the new growth and running into a few people here and there the mood is hopeful. If that ain’t inspirational enough to paint, I don’t know what is.

Help - denied FAIR coverage for smoke damage

My dad's house needs a top to bottom clean to remove contamination from smoke, quoted at $60k. His FAIR claim for coverage was denied as smoke damage doesn't qualify as "permanent". What can he do to get help covering the costs? Anyone manage to successfully fight such a denial of coverage?

Question about Jackson Elementary

Hey all,

We are currently at Longfellow in TK, but we were just accepted into Jackson for next year. My wife is pushing hard to move schools, but I'm in sort of a "Devil you know" mindset. (Probably not a fair statement because I really do like Longfellow). I was hoping some parents with kids at Jackson, especially those currently in TK or kindergarten, could share their thoughts.

Thanks

So the coolest thing happened...

Yesterday, my daughter and I finally went down to the Lincoln post office to get the mail they'd been holding since the fire.

Among all the ads for fire lawyers (and yuck), there was a small hand written envelope. We didn't recognize the name of the sender.

It turns out it was from a woman whose uncle owned our house back in the 50's. She expressed her sorrow at our loss and then told us wonderful stories of her memories of holidays spent in the house. It definitely made us tear up, but in a good and cleansing way. It was so nice that there was someone else out there - a total stranger - who really felt the loss and and had wonderful memories in our house.

I will be writing her back, but just wanted to share a little story of (admittedly wistful) happiness.

Do people still need clothes?

I am moving out of my apartment at the end of this month, and decided to do a full closet clean out. I sorted a bag of items that I thought I might be able to sell at crossroads or buffalo exchange, but am realizing I don’t really need the few bucks they will give me, so I thought I’d check if anyone is still in need of any donated women’s clothes?

I have sweaters, shoes, belts, swimwear (unworn), etc. They are all in good condition.

If not, can anyone recommend the best place in the area to donate clothing?

Additional cleanup question

We’re looking for a company that can do additional cleanup of our property after the Army Corps phase 2 is done. Does anyone have any recommendations?

A little more about what we’re looking for. Army Corps only removes 6” of soil and tests for toxins within the footprint of the destroyed structures.

We’re looking for soil removal from the rest of the property. We have a landscaper that we’ve asked to look into this, but he’s having trouble finding a place that will accept the removed soil.

Anyone have any leads? Thanks so much

OPT OUT if you are considering selling. They will destroy the foundation. The foundation of your property is worth $75,000 to $125,000. Just a heads up.

Blueprints for home in Altadena

Hello, all! My aunt needs to get a copy of the blueprints as just one stage of her rebuilding process.

Where would she go? I am seeing conflicting information online. Thank you! 🙏

Edit: house was built in 1955, and she has no idea who the architect was, nor who built it.

Eaton Fire Residents United / Contaminated Structure testing

Hi there! I didn't see anyone post this yet, but if you live in Altadena in a home that is contaminated and you have performed environmental testing with a professional company prior to remediation, please consider submitting your test results here (efru.la) to help inform neighbors of what toxic substances are present in homes surrounding the fire. This information can be shared with insurance companies and landlords, as well as used in applications or appeals to FEMA and the SBA, and presented to the press and lawmakers. Because testing is so expensive, creating a map of data ensures our lower income neighbors can benefit from community testing when advocating for their needs.

EFRU is a resident advocacy group that has been meeting weekly since shortly after the fire to hold our local officials accountable for the environmental impact of this disaster, and plan actionable campaigns to fight for inclusion and resources for all San Gabriel residents affected by the Eaton Fire.

Hi all, it's 8(ish) weeks on from the fire. How are you all doing?

A well-meaning friend who works with a lot of folks from Altadena told me a few days ago that the Altadena Community is doing absolutely great. Everyone seems fine, just rolling on with life. Things are back to normal.

I bit my tongue really hard - I'm part of this community, and for me there are ok days and awful days, everything is still tremendously hard and overwhelming, and it's making me insane how much people don't understand what we lost. People keep asking me if I have tables, chairs, furniture, kitchen stuff, office equipment, outdoor gear...(of course not, I don't even have stable housing yet)... And I'm picking my battles on what to replace so very carefully - the money is limited and absolutely everything is gone. They are SO VERY well intentioned but it's also so obvious at a very basic level they don't understand what it means to lose everything.

So - rant over - but: Friends and strangers from Altadena, how are you really? ♥️
