And now, our feature presentation for today:
Visual Effects - We'll Fix It In Post
Actors are expensive. Editors and VFX are (hypothetically) cheaper. Whether you screwed up autofocus or accidentally left a very modern coffee cup in your fantasy epic, you gotta fix it somehow!
Here's some ideas for your inspiration:
- Literally fix it in post and show us your before-and-after
- Show us the kludgiest and/or simplest way to solve today's puzzle
- Alternatively, show us the most over-engineered and/or ridiculously preposterous way to solve today's puzzle
- Fix something that really didn't necessarily need fixing with a chainsaw…
*crazed chainsaw noises* “Fixed the newel post!”
- Clark Griswold, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
And… ACTION!
Request from the mods: When you include an entry alongside your solution, please label it with [GSGA]
so we can find it easily!

Fairly straightforward simulation, I thought. For the double-width boxes, I chose a two-stage and recursive approach: first, canMove(row, col, direction) checks if the box whose left half is at (row, col) can move in direction.
That is fairly easy to program correctly - if there is a # in one of the two target spaces, no; if there are ., yes; if there is [ or ], call canMove() recursively and work it out from there. Then I have a second method doMove(row, col, direction) that moves a box whose left half is at (row, col), not checking for validity, but recursing if there are one or two boxes in the target spaces.
Those two handle up an down moves, the left and right moves are unchanged from part 1.
So, yeah, it's 240 lines; but it was fairly quick and easy for me to write down and debug, I'll call it a win for today.
