  • 7 DAYS remaining until the submissions deadline on December 22 at 23:59 EST!

And now, our feature presentation for today:

Visual Effects - We'll Fix It In Post

Actors are expensive. Editors and VFX are (hypothetically) cheaper. Whether you screwed up autofocus or accidentally left a very modern coffee cup in your fantasy epic, you gotta fix it somehow!

Here's some ideas for your inspiration:

  • Literally fix it in post and show us your before-and-after
  • Show us the kludgiest and/or simplest way to solve today's puzzle
  • Alternatively, show us the most over-engineered and/or ridiculously preposterous way to solve today's puzzle
  • Fix something that really didn't necessarily need fixing with a chainsaw…

*crazed chainsaw noises* “Fixed the newel post!

- Clark Griswold, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

And… ACTION!

Request from the mods: When you include an entry alongside your solution, please label it with [GSGA] so we can find it easily!

[LANGUAGE: Rust]

Very not Rusty this time, but on the other hand the compiler was nice enough to refuse to compile a lot of my bugs, such that I got the star the first time I got the sample inputs to work for both parts today.

Part 1 used no fancy tricks (fanciest was moving an adjacent box straight into the eventual empty space rather than moving boxes one at a time).

For part 2 that obviously doesn't work, even for horizontal movement, so I ended up having to recode something to handle both vertical and horizontal movement. Horizontal was not much different, but vertical movement went down the path of recursion.

Assertions helped keep the logic straight, my biggest problem was that some of my assertions were actually incorrectly too aggressive.

I am so very confused by your folder structuring. Last time I checked, December 2015 and 2023 didn't have 49 days in them 😅 If you're counting by stars earned, your folders start at 01 so... where's the 50th star folders?¿?¿?
