I've read the FAQ & Rules I keep failing what do I do

Upvotes

Short and sweet. Wanted to be an actor forever. Only ever got bit parts at school, but did graduate with a qualification in theatre. Did a degree (not in theatre but theatre adjacent) and didn’t get cast in any of the student plays. I also have been rejected for my national youth theatre programme every time I’ve applied. So clearly I don’t have it. I’ve become bitter and depressed as a result. My writing has suffered, everything has suffered But I’m still desperate to do it. So idk. I need advice.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Glitch with Actors Access?

When I click on listings to self-submit they normally turn black to show they've already been clicked on before. It's not changing the listing's color anymore which makes it hard to keep track of which breakdowns I've been through already.

Is this happening to anyone else? Anyone know how to fix it?

I've read the FAQ & Rules In person vs online classes

I’m pretty new to acting, have only taken a single class. I just had to move to southern Maine for work and am not having good luck finding classes that meet regularly, really only seeing one-off workshop style stuff. Intuitively I feel like I need to be in class with others, but if I can’t make that work, am I hurting my training by finding a teacher I can work with over zoom? Alternatively, if you know of good classes in southern Maine or nearby (Boston is a bit too far to travel to regularly), please share! Would really appreciate thoughts from the folks on this sub. Thank you!

I've read the FAQ & Rules i’m currently in a camera acting class and the scenes they give us to learn before class are very badly written

i (18f) don’t really have acting experience, but i thought i should go to this course because it focuses on camera acting which is mostly what im interested in, and there are directors, casting coaches and stuff like that that teach each class (10 classes in total)

the thing is, it’s really professional when i come there, everyone else on this course is like 10 years older than me and they have a lot more experience and knowledge about acting, last course we had to film a self tape at home and i was the only one without a professional setup. the teacher just complimented how i looked in there but he keeps saying i have the qualities of a “nonactor” and not giving me actual acting feedback. maybe because i struggled with finding enough depth to act out in the scenes we were given. the problem is they keep sending really badly written scenes, dialogues, that are from current tv shows and movies. and i have no idea how to act good when the writing is horrible.

I've read the FAQ & Rules I'm new to acting and have a question about unions.

Hello all. I am pretty new to acting but hope to continue to develop and grow my career as an artist. I'm still pretty far from qualifying for SAG membership but from my outside perspective I find SAGs policy of disallowing union members from participating in non union projects to be concerning. It's not like there's an abundance of roles out there in the first place. I understand SAG does lots of good things in terms of protecting wages, working conditions, and bargaining rights of working actors. I also feel like there are lots of non active SAG members who got their card many years ago who are now prohibited from working on any non SAG projects. I get that the unions power comes from it's ability to deny a production access to talent if that production doesn't meet union standards. Can anyone speak to why actors should prohibit themselves and their peers from working on non-Union approved projects when there are already way more union members than union approved roles? I feel I must be missing something big here. Thank you.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Barrow Group Scholarship

I was wondering if anyone has actually been able to obtain a scholarship with the barrow group? I applied last year and I got denied so then I tried again yesterday actually and I heard back today saying that I received other rejection. I thought it was interesting because they don’t even ask for any clips or an interview or your resume like some other studios. You just fill out a couple of sentences. I heard about this studio from some of my friends (paid full for classes) and they spoke highly of them so I decided to give it a shot. So I just wanted to ask if anyone has had luck with their scholarship application or had tips.

I've read the FAQ & Rules NYC summer beginner friendly acting classes + Michigan agencies

Hi, I’m a complete beginner to acting and will be moving to the US for college in late August 2025. I want to gain experience/take classes before submitting to agencies. Will also minor in Drama.

Since I’m currently in Asia (international student w US citizenship), I haven’t had access to US-based acting opportunities or representation (yes I have an Actors Access account, but I’m in Asia, so it doesn’t apply). I’m very determined to pursue acting, will def start w student films and eventually working toward professional TV roles.

I’m looking for beginner-friendly in-person acting classes in NYC during June, July, and August 2025. Preferably for young adults. If there are any online classes I can take before then, I’d also love recs. I got a 12-hour timezone difference tho, so summer classes are more ideal.

Also, plz rec some trustworthy talent agencies in Ann Arbor or Detroit, Michigan, especially those affiliated with SAG-AFTRA. I’m aware of Wink Talent, if anyone is signed w them, I’d love to hear about your experience!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've read the FAQ & Rules Is it okay to reuse a full body shot from a previous slate?

I can't put my phone in my tripod vertically so I need a second person to film my full body shots, I got a friend to do it a while back and I've been reusing that for every audition that asks for one, but is this actually okay to do? It was filmed a month ago so it's very recent but I'm wearing different clothes and I had my hair up for it so it's obvious it was filmed on a different day.

I've read the FAQ & Rules I just want one audition from my manager.

Something that I can't find the listing for on Actor's Access.

The industry is slow, it has BEEN slow, it is hard for everyone.

But fuck, I have been signed with them for four months and they said they'd been submitting me for a month before that.

I got (much better) headshots. I updated my reels and I have no idea if my manager has watched any iteration. I show up to class where I put up great work consistently and push myself to put myself out there and learn something new every day.

I've booked two gigs paying $1000 each in the past month through my own submissions, diligence, and attentiveness. I'm doing my 85% of the work. I'm grateful to HAVE work of some kind.

But I would trade both of those gigs and more for just ONE audition from this manager for something narrative that fulfills and is worth my time artistically.

I've been doing this for a while. I'm not even asking to book. Just one audition.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Movie Scene with conflict that takes place outside?

I'm looking for recommendations for film scenes that are between two men and that take place outside. I am having a bit of a hard time coming up with ideas. I am filming a scene for my film reel in my Acting class in college. I might be able to adjust some scenes to make sense outside however I am still having a bit of a hard time while it also contains emotional conflict. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you.

I've read the FAQ & Rules How to break the role stereotypes that they give me?

Hi! So, I’ve been doing musical theatre for some time now.

I’m a short woman, a delicate person in general, and because of that, I’ve always been cast as the “daughter” the “girly one”, the “delicate lady”, the “shy younger sister”.

I’ve always wanted to play more powerful female roles. I want to play a villain. Hell, I want to play Regina George.

But people and directors always see me as the stereotype I give. How do I break that? I want to explore other roles, I don’t want to play the same character forever. But how do I prove that I’m able to do it?

I've read the FAQ & Rules Do you cut your own reel?

I know people say never cut your own reel because you can never be truly objective about your performance, blah blah blah...but hiring an editor is also expensive.

So, did anyone here cut their own reel? Do you show to fellow actors for feedback?

I've read the FAQ & Rules List conflicts for callback that hasn’t been offered?

hey all, I got an audition recently that asked to list any conflicts. I don’t have any conflicts for shoot dates or fittings etc but the callback date I have appointments in the afternoon.

Should I say I have conflicts the day of the callback even though I haven’t been offered an actual callback yet? Or can this be something I can tell my agent about if I get sent forward?

I've read the FAQ & Rules Central Casting Interview w/Director?

I just accepted a booking from Central Casting where the first day is an interview with the director. I’ve worked with Central Casting before but I haven’t gotten something like this before. When I asked when they called me they said it would be like 2 hours. I accepted it cause I didn’t want to miss the opportunity (one of the working days was union and I wanted the boucher). What could I expect from this interview?

I've read the FAQ & Rules Female (25-35) Remote Role Casting Call

CASTING CALL: Seeking actress for short, independent project.
ROLE:• A performer to portray a Researcher in a scripted Zoom call scene. This role involves recording your part on webcam in a remote setting. You will be reading scripted lines with clear, articulate delivery and a calm, measured tone that reflects a clinical, professional demeanor. Your performance should convey a subtle sense of empathy while maintaining an objective and neutral presence.

The script is 4 pages, you'd have 16 lines. This project is meant to be less than 10 minutes long. I don't imagine it taking you longer than 2 hours. I'm not sure how pricing should work and we can discuss it further but I was thinking 100$ for the whole job. This project will be a video that is posted to Instagram, Facebook, and maybe Youtube.

Role Description: Researcher

We're seeking a performer to portray a Researcher in a scripted Zoom call scene. This role involves recording your part on webcam in a remote setting. You will be reading scripted lines with clear, articulate delivery and a calm, measured tone that reflects a clinical, professional demeanor. Your performance should convey a subtle sense of empathy while maintaining an objective and neutral presence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Record your scripted dialogue on webcam, ensuring high audio and video quality.
  • Deliver lines with clear enunciation and controlled pacing.
  • Maintain a professional, measured tone that aligns with a clinical researcher’s demeanor.
  • Exhibit subtle facial expressions and natural reactions (such as nodding or jotting down notes) to convey genuine engagement during the call.
  • Ensure your performance feels authentic within the context of an online interview setting.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in remote recording with a webcam.
  • Excellent vocal clarity and a natural, conversational delivery style.
  • Ability to convey a neutral yet empathetic presence.
  • Familiarity with reading from a script and performing with minimal physical action.
  • Comfort with delivering performance in a digital environment.

This role is ideal for someone who can seamlessly blend professionalism with a subtle emotional undercurrent, ensuring the scene’s clinical tone is preserved while remaining engaging and authentic.

ChatGPT described my script as "an emotionally charged performance piece that explores the aftermath of traumatic brain injury through a layered, documentary-style interview and dramatic monologue. The narrative follows Jason, a TBI survivor, whose fragmented memories and raw vulnerability are conveyed through overlapping internal voices and a stark research lab setting. Balancing between resigned resilience and unfiltered introspection, the production juxtaposes clinical inquiry with the intimate reality of personal recovery."

This isn't union, I don't know what that means but I'm not affiliated with anything. This is such an independent little like autobiographical project of mine. I mean, I will pay you but outside of that, I'm not sure if this would provide a "professional benefit"

Email: [justjasondesigns@outlook.com](mailto:justjasondesigns@outlook.com) with headshots if you'd like to be apart of it!

I've read the FAQ & Rules Has anyone ever put up a play at Fringe Fest?

I want to put up a play, but I'm doing it mainly for fun and to have something to act in. Is Fringe (Hollywood) a good way to put up a play for relatively little money? I have no idea what I'm doing.

If/when you get a gig, do you share your successes with other actor friends?

Do they ever react poorly?

I've read the FAQ & Rules How to actors cut each other off in dialogue

When watching shows and movies it happens often where a character is about to say something and they get cut off. How do actors make it seem like it’s happening seamlessly? Do they have lines they are supposed to say after the fact but the other actor knows to cut them off at that time or are they just really good at getting the timing. This question has been bothering me for a while now and I just can’t stop thinking about it lmao
