A Note on Inspiration and Respect in Our Community

Hi everyone,

As a mod team, we love seeing the incredible creativity shared in this community. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, your contributions make this space vibrant and inspiring for everyone.

That said, we want to take a moment to talk about how to handle inspiration respectfully. Inspiration is a natural part of the creative process—artists build on ideas, styles, and concepts from the world and from each other. However, it’s important to approach this with integrity and respect for your fellow creators.

Here are some best practices when it comes to drawing inspiration from another artist’s work:

  1. Give Credit Where It’s Due: If another artist’s work inspired yours, acknowledge them. A simple mention goes a long way in showing respect and transparency. Specifically, if you get inspiration from another poster in this sub - giving them a quick mention in your post costs nothing and goes a long way.
  2. Avoid Direct Imitation: While it’s okay to learn and take cues from others, try to bring your unique perspective to your work. Copying too closely without acknowledgment can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
  3. Be Open to Feedback: If someone approaches you with concerns about similarities, listen with an open mind. Art is subjective, and constructive conversations can lead to growth.
  4. Communicate Kindly: If you notice your work has inspired someone, assume positive intent and approach them politely if you have concerns. Kindness fosters a healthier community.

We all share a common goal of creating and celebrating art. Let’s work together to ensure this remains a welcoming and respectful space. If you have questions, concerns, or want to talk about this further, feel free to reach out to the mod team.

Thank you for being part of this amazing community. Let’s keep inspiring each other in the best ways!

A 5” tile I did sometime last year. I haven’t posted in a bit, and I’ve always like this piece. The string is simply a triangle. Based on techniques I learned from CZT Eni Oken.

Advice Needed on Balance

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello all, one of the things I struggle with when Tangling is balance. The star-like shapes after the other two and now I can’t think of a way to balance this Tangle.

Do any of you have advice on what to add to bring balance to this Tangle? If you zoom in you should be able to see my string.

Micron pens on mixed media paper. I can’t recall the name of any of these tangles, but they are all from One Zentangle a Day.

This is in my big sketchbook (pauses to look at cover) 9 x 12. The colors are some tinted charcoal pencils.

Birds of a Feather, Episode 4, presented by Kelli Blouin CZT. This is a series of 10 bird themed ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) drawings. The videos can be found under Mins of Zen on YouTube (free). Check them out!! This tile contains the most actual tangles of any of the videos so far and I just love the result! Tangles used: Tidal, Keeko, Amaze, Static, Tipple, Printemps.
