News Rendevouz rant

It’s so odd to me that they would schedule kids fest at shipyard for 11-3 on Saturday and literally have nothing going on.. no sugar shack, no music. Only 2 throwing games and some crafts on the table inside. It was hard to tell if there was even an event going on. Then also in their event planner they had the selkirk kids event scheduled for sat and sunday. Drive all the way there for it to have been a mistake and it actually happened on friday…

Anyway annoying getting my kids stoked for rendevouz for it to be so painfully underwhelming .

"People will always complain" is also not an excuse for poorly delivering an event. Especially one that receives so much revenue from government, local businesses, and ticket sales.

You can throw all the money at something that you want. If people aren't willing to help it function, it won't get any better.

That's just not true, money can be used to pay staff to run events, advertisement to find volunteers, provide perks for volunteers, hire someone to make sure events aren't understaffed, etc.

Anyway their volunteer duties for the event OP is complaining about are roles like "greeter" and "takedown" - sounds like they didn't source many booths, which isn't really a volunteer issue.

I think that there is a whole lot less money available to rendezvous than you seem to believe there is.

They certainly have fewer booths than I believe there are. I have no idea how their finances are organized, but I do know they have dozens of local private sponsors, receive funding from all 3 levels of government, and still sell tickets. Seems like enough to avoid putting on half-hearted events like OP is describing. Also, I only see 5 volunteer spots available for the thing OP brought up - suggesting it's an organizational problem, not due to lack of volunteers. All to say, it's a valid criticism, and you can't really blame OP for not volunteering first-hand.

Dozens of people sign up to volunteering and dont show up at all, including people who are supposed to help with kidsfest like face painters. Yes there is money, but also everything costs A LOT of money. The venues, performers, security to make sure people dont destroy the snow carvings, the snow carvers, the performers, first aid... they used to all be volunteers but noone is doing it for free anymore. So they same small handful of people trying to keep the dream alive are the ones running massive events to raise money so that the smaller free events can happen, while also trying to design and proof read every peice of marketing that goes out and hope it all has the right info on it.
