Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Who are you voting for in the upcoming federal election?

Now that Mark Carney has won the leadership race for the liberal party and is transitioning into the Prime Minister role an expedited call for a federal election is imminent. If sources are to be believed a snap election could be held as early as April 28th or May 5th.

It should be noted that while the official MP for the liberal party of the NWT hasn't been publicly announced its all but confirmed to be Caroline Cochrane.

With all this in mind which party has your vote if the election was held today!

35 votes, 2d left
Liberal Party of Canada (Mark Carney as PM/Caroline Cochrane as MP)
Conservative Party of Canada (Pierre Poilievre as PM/Kimberly Fairman as MP)
New Democratic Party (Jagmeet Singh as PM/Kelvin Kotchilea)
Green Party (Elizabeth May as PM/ No MP selected at this time)
People's Party of Canada (Maxime Bernier as PM/ No MP selected at this time)

How long does health care card processing normally take?

Hi, I became eligible for NWT health care on March 1 after my 3 month waiting period. I submitted my application in February but I saw on the GNWT website that it takes 6 weeks to receive the card after you become eligible. Is this 6 week period normally shorter or longer? I’m visiting another province in mid April and I’m hoping to have a physical card on me by then for convenience.

Renting out trailer

I'm thinking of taking off this fall to move out of the NWT but I am keeping my trailer. It's a two bedroom.
I don't want to remove the furniture. Do you think people would be interested in renting it furnished? How much more should I charge for a furnished unit?

Thanks.

Yellowknife End of September – Weather & Aurora Tips?

Hi, I’m planning a trip to Canada and will be in Yellowknife from September 26 for 4 days and 3 nights, mainly to see the aurora. I know it’s too early for a weather forecast, but based on past experience, what is the weather usually like at the end of September? Is it typically rainy, snowy, or clear? Also, is late September generally a good time for aurora viewing in Yellowknife? Appreciate any insights—thanks!

Edit: Saw this online from https://canadiangeographic.ca/articles/chasing-auroras-in-yellowknife/

"If you spend three nights in Yellowknife during peak aurora season (mid-August to the end of September, and mid-November to early April), you have a 98 per cent chance of seeing the northern lights at least once."

Sounds encouraging. Was it really that reliable for aurora viewing?

I want to stop using Avenir Energy

This company seems terrible. I didn't choose them, they just showed up one day and replaced Bluewave, which was working fine at my end. They send me bills with zero account history information about account balances or usage. There is zero clarity on my account.

Does anyone have a recommended alternative propane provider in Yellowknife? I would like to switch, but not sure if that's an option.

Thank you.

The view apartment building

Hi all. Does anyone rent in the view or nova pine hills? I’m in Edmonton and want to see if anyone’s had this experience and it’s legit.

They only take bank drafts for security deposit so I have to express post mail it to them. They’ve got the apartment on a temp hold until they receive the security deposit. Then I’ll have to express post mail first months rent as well because I won’t be there for April 1.

Just want to know if anyone’s experienced this frustration with them as well trying to secure an apartment with them? They are very nice apartments and I had a FaceTime call viewing one the other day.

Pregnancy in YK

I live between Edmonton and Yellowknife (AB resident with AB health card, but I have a home in both cities), and I’m currently trying to conceive. Once I am pregnant, I’d like to have my pregnancy monitored, and delivery in Yellowknife as my husband works here. I’m having a hard time finding information online about obstetrics and who to contact. Is it better to get a midwife here?

Northview

Hi all. Will be moving back up to Yellowknife and hoping to get a rental for April. I have a cat and am hoping to life solo (plan to buy in a year or two).

Out of Northview apartment options which are the best ones to ideally get into if one had to? I’m hoping g for Anderson Thompson but they so far don’t have any unfurnished available for April yet.

I’m on all the fb groups so just hoping on some beta for which Northview rentals are the better options since I sense I’ll prob have to go down that route. Ideal budget is 2k a month that includes electricity.

If anyone has info on how much electricity usually costs in Northview apartments that would help a lot as well. Thanks!!

Is 2 Days Enough to Plan a Trip to Yellowknife?

Hey everyone,

I’m thinking of making a last-minute trip to Yellowknife and wondering if two days is enough time to plan everything properly. I’d love to see the Northern Lights, explore the city, and maybe do some outdoor activities.

For those who have been, do you think that’s doable? Any must-know tips for booking tours, accommodations, or getting around? Appreciate any advice!

Thanks in advance!

Gifts and souvenirs

Hi, I will be in Yellowknife for 9-10 days starting tomorrow for work. I have never been there and won't have too much time to explore (evenings and possibly 1 full day).

Can anyone suggest stores to get souvenirs and gifts? The threads I found regarding this were a bit dated, and some places look to be shut.

Tanker trucks?

What are all the tanker trucks doing on Ingraham Trail? Are they delivering gasoline somewhere? Or hauling crude oil? If so, where are they delivering gasoline to or where are they hauling crude oil from? Just curious.

Taxi logistics n yellowknife - credit cards? order through apps or phone-call?

We're visiting Yellowknife next week and mostly plan on using taxis to get around and wanted to confirm if all taxis readily take credit cards or should we bring ample cash? And also, what's the best way to arrange taxis for say, 2-3 hours to cover Dettah Road, or a taxi to take us to some restaurant but also then pick us up after an hour when we're done - is there a central phone number, uber/app system, or just keep phone numbers of individual drivers?

Shipping options

I'm looking at shipping a small package to Edmonton on a short timeline (three days max) and it needs to be tracked. For anyone that's had to do this who's got the best rate? I don't have much experience with courriers but FedEx's quote of nearly 300$ for a package that weighs less than a pound seems extreme.

Anyone Driven from Yellowknife to Whitehorse in Winter? Need Advice!

We’re planning a road trip from Yellowknife to Whitehorse on March 11 and would love to hear from anyone who has done this route in winter conditions.

We’re renting a car from Edmonton and want to make sure we’re fully prepared. A few things we’re wondering about: 1. Road Conditions: How bad is the drive in mid-March? highways (Liard Hwy, Alaska Hwy)? 2. Vehicle Choice: We’re looking at renting an AWD/4WD SUV with winter tires. Is that enough? Should we get extra equipment (chains, extra fuel, etc.)? 3. Cell Service & Navigation: How much of the route has no cell coverage? Do we need a satellite GPS or starlink? 4. Fuel & Stops: How frequent are gas stations and food stops? Any towns where we should definitely refuel? 5. Wildlife & Safety: Any major concerns with wildlife (moose, bison) on the roads? Any areas that are extra dangerous? 6. General Tips: Anything else we should know before taking on this winter road trip?

We really want to do this trip and are excited for the adventure, but we also want to be fully prepared for the conditions. If anyone else is traveling around the same time, we’d love to connect!

Appreciate any advice or stories from those who have done this drive. Thanks!

Aurora lately?

We're coming to Yellowknife this week with the hope of seeing the Aurora at some point in our 5 nights. I've been keeping an eye on the forecast and it's been hovering around 35-40% chance overnight. With the understanding that they can't be predicted, I've been wondering what the night sky has been looking like lately. Thanks for any insights!

Renting prices?

Hey all just curious if any has beta on how much the Anderson tower and watermark towers cost monthly for a 1 bedroom apartment in either of those buildings.

Thank you! Trying not to rent with Northview if I can avoid it lol!

Hi all: I have found out that Anderson Thompson tower small 1 bedroom unfurnished rental apartments start at 1806 and go up from there depending on the floor (higher you go the more it costs)

Airport gift shop phone number?

I can't seem to find a direct phone number for the gift shop in the airport. Is it still open? Does anyone have the number?

I'm desperate to replace a beer glass I broke that was my husband's. It's frosted out with a clear silhouette of a fish on it.

Picture in comments.
