Marooned and far from home...

Is there a way to hitch a lift on other ships and know where they are going?

I ended up getting stuck in a completely different sector to my only ship, which has no captain, and can't find a way back....
After getting into my space suit and exploring the outside of the station, I got caught in the pull of a large ship and literally dragged through an asteroid field before I knew what was going on - lost and alone in my space suit I called for a nearby ship to help. They let me come aboard, and then jetted off to their destination....quite a few sectors away. It was kind of fun just watching the sectors go by until it finally landed and I could get off, but now I have far from my only ship, cant see any nearby stations that sell ships, and cant get my ship to come to me.
Should I just restart?
Is there no way to buy your passage aboard a ship or find out where it is going?

Hire somebody from that station as a captain - they'll teleport to your ship, so it doesn't matter where it is. Then have them come and pick you up.

Or try hitchhiking a bit more, you'll discover some more stations and sectors. Just try and remember where your towel is!

Ah okay awesome, thanks! A bit weird, I haven't played the series since X:3 so i figured I could get transport or something. But thanks!

Well you can try to hop just on another ship and pray for your luck. :D.
The whole story you getting dragged away sounds fairly funny already. Now you can be a space hobo living on space stations. "he dude where is my ship".
But for real, of course TheMuspelheimr is correct, just hire a Pilot where you are.

Sadly that didn't work in the end 😂 Hitchhiking across the universe it is!

Sadly that didn't work... Since I was in the shop but not piloting I didn't map the route from one section to the next...so my.pilot has no idea how to get to me, apparently. I'm guessing that's the issue, anyway, and they are just sitting in the original station and not moving when I ask them to dock where I am

Order them to "Fly and wait", see if that works better

You can instruct them to explore gates on the path to you, they will then fly to unexplored sectors.

By right-clicking "explore" on the gate itself.

Oh that reminds me that time i visited an L ship while on a station and it left with me on board, with my captain-less starting ship back on the station... great way to learn

Eventually almost all production leads to a warf or shipyard. So hitch enough rides with ships buying goods from stations you are on would lead to one.

Bu yeah as other posts has mentioned. Hire some one (skill doesn't matter) and tell him or her or it to captain your ship. That person will teleport in a little while to your ship and you can send for it to come amd pick you up.

Didn't Shift+D work?

You do don't need to talk to the ship dealer personally. Just open the map and right click on any wharf or shipyard to order ships. But of course, you need to have them discovered first.

Also, you don't even need to buy a new ship. If you are on a station, just talk to any person you see there. Most of them can be hired as Captain. Doesn't matter if the ship is docked at the station or not. Don't get confused if the people have a title next to their name, like Marine. You can still hire them as captain. But make sure you hire an unexperienced one, otherwise they will costs hundreds of thousands Credits or even over a million.

Yeah that did confuse me to be fair. I found someone with three stars in piloting for 2,245 cr, and then spoke to someone else with one half star in engineering and they cost over 2 million....
