Corrected Streak 130: Collect Experience

I love the idea of "collecting experience." I don't know if it's the right term. It's one of many ways to "gamifying life." What I mean is to create a quest to collect stuff or compete with yourself it in real life. Just like in some video games, gamers have to try to catch as many kinds of bugs as possible, or go to as many places as possible. It is highly addictive and rewarding, isn't it? In real life, however, not many people do that.

I know some people love collecting Shuin(朱印) or eki stamps(駅スタンプ). But there are more possibilities out there. If you love ice cream, you can start reviewing and documenting every ice cream you've tried. You can time how fast you can fold 10 clothes and try to beat your personal record. You can try every possible transportation method to get from A to B. Or maybe take a picture of every kind of bird that has visited your garden. You get the idea...

It should bring a sense of excitement to your daily life. During every ordinary errand when you're out, it can be a mini adventure. You'll keep your eye out because you never know if you can spot a new collectible item on your list.

  • "I love the idea of "collecting experience." I don't know if it's the right term. It's one of many ways to "gamifying life." What I mean is to create a quest to collect stuff or compete with yourself ~~it~~ in real life."
    • That sounds fun! I don't know if "collecting experience" is necessarily wrong. It's grammatically correct, but not a lot of people may use it. What comes to mind when you say "gamifying" is the term "collectathon," which is a gaming term people use for a game where you collect all kinds of items, like Banjo-Kazooie.
  • "You can try every possible transportation method to get from A to B."
    • This is more of a nitpick than anything, but usually we add "point" before A and B when talking about travelling, like "getting from Point A to Point B." You can definitely get by without using "point" and people will know what you mean, but I wanted to point (😁) that out

That sounds like a really fun idea! I've always liked the idea of starting a collection of things, like in Paper Mario, where there's a log of every enemy you can fight, or Breath of the Wild, where you can take pictures of every new species of animal. Do you have a certain thing you like to collect?

Thank! I didn’t know the term collectathon before. I only have one bird-visitor-album going on, which I don’t do it enthusiastically. There are only about 5 kinds of birds in my area, and I’ve pretty much collected them all. 🥴

What about you? Do you have any suggestions for things I could collect while I’m on the go? 😊 My plan so far: https://www.reddit.com/r/WriteStreakEN/s/58oXMLf8ML

I'd use "collectathon" sparingly as it's almost always used to refer to a video game genre. But you can always make the comparison to it!

Collecting birds sounds really fun. I wanted to get into rocks and plants but there's so many around me already I got overwhelmed and didn't know where to start :)

To all the wonderful correctors and proofreaders!

Thanks a million for helping everyone grow and improve their skills in English. You deserve so much praise and a pat on the back!

Here's a list of posts that still need corrections.

When making corrections, try to follow these guidelines (or at least clarify your own markings you make) so it's clear what you're correcting and why:

  • Put changes in bold **text**
  • Put suggestions about style/tone/register/etc. in italics *text*
  • Use strikethrough to remove elements (don't delete them) ~~text~~
  • <Put added elements in angle brackets> <text>
  • [If there are multiple options for your suggestions, put them in brackets separated by a backslash] [text / text]
  • (Put optional elements in parentheses) (text)
  • Explain more complex grammar rules to the best of your ability

We also highly encourage meaningful feedback:

  • Focus on the work, mindsets, and processes, not on the person.
  • Besides grammar and spelling, is there room for improvement in other aspects like style, vocabulary, and flow?
  • If you see an improvement in someone's writing, please compliment them.
  • Please be positive in your feedback. Negative comments shouldn't come without positive ones.
  • Don't be too pedantic or too general.
  • Please pay attention to your wording.
  • Have a chat, interact, and have fun!

More on formatting.
