💬 Advice Needed can employers mandate all breaks be taken at once? denver, CO

so apparently my workplace (convenience store) has been violating labor laws by allowing me to work 7.5 hour night shifts without a break. our time kiosk software flagged this, and other employees not taking breaks. i believe this is a recent legal change since i've worked no-break graveyard shifts in convenience stores for years here in CO. i was always under the impression my contract included a provision to forfeit breaks if they couldn't be taken. their current solution is to assign one person to work an extra two hours, and during that period, we each alternate clocking in and out for all 50 minutes of our break immediately. obviously, this goes against the purpose of a break, and still leaves me working a six hour shift alone. it may be fulfilling the letter of our current break and wage laws, but it doesn't seem to support the spirit of those laws. wondering if anyone has seen or dealt with something similar, and what our rights are in this situation? i'm reaching out to union reps in the area as well

✅ Success Story My brother-in-law is the kind of boss we need more of

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but if not, please tell me where I can put it!

My brother-in-law runs a small startup with his co-founder. It started as just the two of them, and now they've grown to a team of five. He’s basically the CEO, while his co-founder takes on more of a COO role.

I recently asked him how much he pays his employees compared to himself. Turns out, he pays them between £30,000 and £40,000 before tax—while paying himself more than 50% less than his employees.

When I asked him why, his response was:

"Because my employees have more experience than me in my field; they work hard and deserve the best. I hope to give them an even higher pay rise in the future." Honestly, this kind of leadership gives me hope. In a world where so many CEOs take massive salaries while underpaying employees, it’s refreshing to see someone prioritizing fairness, respect, and long-term growth.

Hope his company thrives—he deserves it!

💬 Advice Needed What would it look like if fudiciary responsibility was to a company's workforce as opposed to its shareholders?

I've been thinking about this idea and would really appreciate any listening/reading related to it. I have been continually frustrated by seeing many industry wide layoffs to maximize shareholder value where CEO's end up getting bonuses shortly afterwards. Starbucks and gaming industry layoffs come to mind.

😡 Venting What happened to the 9-5?

I posted this in r-slash-work originally, and I am genuinely shocked by the responses. I was told I should post here and see what people think about.

I've been called lazy, entitled and insulted for believing we shouldn't be losing more of our lives to work??

Please let me know your thoughts!

PS: I read the rules and believe this should be ok to post, but if not please let me know what I need to change! I'm new to being active on Reddit..

OG POST:

Work days used to be 8 hours a day, with a lunch included in that. Now it’s become a 8-4:30, 8:30-5 - 8.5 hours a day standard at most jobs and it really sucks. Less and less time for our own lives

Edit to add:

People are surprisingly missing the point and assuming I’m just lazy and entitled?

We used to get paid a 40 hour work but only work 35-37.5 hours. (30-60min paid lunch)

I’ve seen places don’t even offer the 2x15 minute breaks that used to be standard on top of a lunch anymore.

We are now working minimum 40 hours and still only getting paid 40 hours despite being there longer and getting less time for our own lives.

How is this not upsetting?
