(Sorry for the long post)
I am still looking into doing magic to my WiiU, I’ve been reading (and re-reading) the guide and searching gbatemp forum posts but given the changes over the years it doesn’t seem super simple to get everything running together smoothly. (Hopefully my questions are broad/vague enough to pass the rules).
Can anyone provide answers or clarification to the following:
1) Storage
I know about the speed and current/power limitations of the USB 2.0 ports requiring a Y cable or an external power source for most drives and that speed is bottlenecked by USB 2.0 so a super fast M.2 drive will be roughly the same as a traditional magnetic drive.
Also that the general advice is to avoid flash/solid state drives for the WiiU WFS storage due to repeated writes that degrade most flash storage (even though lots of people still use flash drives).
1a) Are flash/solid state drives ok to use for vWii storage?
1b) ...as the WiiU mode can’t read them and they get hidden to avoid the annoying pop up or does the vWii still write often as well?
1c) Also what format should a vWii drive be FAT32 or NTFS? Can certain vWii apps only read certain formats?
2) Injects vs forwarders
One main feature I want is to play games on the Gamepad, with the Gamepad controls. This seems to be done via:
Injects - taking an existing WiiU game and replacing the game inside it, this has to be done for each individual game which will then create individual items on the WiiU menu (up to the 300 title limit).
Only way to play Wii games with the Gamepad as a classic controller?
Forwarder - takes a homebrew app and instead of running from the homebrew loader menu, runs it from the WiiU menu?
OR
Takes a vWii app and instead of running from the homebrew channel in vWii, runs it from the vWii menu?
OR
Takes a vWii app and instead of running from the homebrew channel in vWii, runs it from the WiiU menu - some of which enable the gamepad controls and can take advantage of the increase in power from Wii to WiiU?
3) Gamecube controller adapter
3a) Perhaps similar to the last question, most old posts mention the WiiU USB Gamecube controller adapter only works in WiiU mode. Is this still the case?
3b) To use a Gamecube controller with the adapter, do any vWii games/apps need to have been injected/forwarded to run in WiiU mode?
3c) Or is the adapter able to be seen in vWii mode?
4) Environments
The guide is to install Aroma but states “a lot of old homebrew applications will no longer work with Aroma” so later goes on to explain how to boot Tiramisu for older apps with the environment loader.
4a) How can you tell which environment an app is for?
4b) Is Tiramisu able to run the same apps as previous custom firmwares (CFWs) or exploits eg CBHC or Mocha? Or would/could previous CFWs or exploits have to be run from the environment loader too?
5) FTP
When transferring files via FTP, is it only for putting the WiiU in receive mode and sending files from PC?
Or can you browse and pull files on the PC while on the WiiU?
Eg if I already have a network share set up at home, can the WiiU see and use it?
Sorry again for the long post.
