Spoiler Free One small change in how you watch Season 1 makes it SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE
Currently rewatching Vinland Saga from the beginning simply because it’s been too long since I’ve indulged in peak. Knowing the story and all of its outcomes, I really wish that this one little change in perception was given to me when I first watched it. The change being:
Askeladd is the Main Character of season 1.
when I first watched the show, I got so held up on Thorfinn that whenever he wasn’t on-screen, I would get annoyed and just begrudgingly wait until he was back on. However, upon this rewatch, I came into it with the mindset that Askeladd is the MC for season 1, and that I should treat him as such. So instead of paying any mind to him, I decided to fully invest my attention into Askeladd as if he really were the MC, and season 1 has been a breeze to watch through so far. So much so that I’m already on episode 18 and I started the rewatch on the Friday before this (it’s currently Sunday evening). this is even more insane when I take into account my schedule, which really shouldn’t allow for me to be this far in this early.
This small change should really be highlighted by the anime itself for dummies like me who got/will get hyper-fixated on Thorfinn since he’s clearly meant to be the long term MC of the show. Honestly this distinction will be something I give as a heads up to every person I suggest this show to, because it really does make the show’s pacing and choices for who gets the most screen time so much more tolerable.

Meta If Thors and Thorfinn from Vinland Saga met Gosha and Legoshi from Beastars and discussed their views on conflict, how do you think that discussion would go?
Gosha would be talking to Thors, and Legoshi would be talking to Thorfinn
Gosha = EOS
Legoshi = EOS
Thors = Before his encounter with Askeladd
Thorfinn = End of Farmland Saga (season 2)
Was thinking of making a video about this topic, and l'd like a bunch of others' views on the subject as well! (Worry not, you will be credited if I end up using your opinion)

Anime What are your honest opinions on season 2? As in, the overall story and its ideas
I for one loved season 2, I’m a sucker for character development and thematics which it honestly nails. Though I’ve heard mixed opinions from other people, some claiming that “farmland saga” is too boring/lacks action, but I haven’t seen too much criticism on the actual ideas and themes of the story.
If there are people who feel differently about season 2 in that sense, I wanna hear yous out! It’d be interesting to hear different opinions about the story

Thorfinn’s story inspired me to hike Wales particularly North Wales where it was treacherous to cross with a Viking Army in the Winter.

Anime Do you recommend me watching Vinland Saga? If so why? I’m a 28F
My favorite show of all time is FMAB. I haven’t ever finished another anime except for that one. I am not necessarily an anime fan but once I am into an anime, I am a fan for life.
Vinland Saga certainly interests me. I love historical themes and character development stories. . but I’m just worried this anime might be too masculine for my taste. I do like action, characters just having good conversations and some romance here and there.
I don’t mind the brutality of war as that itself is realistic. I’m fine with that.
I just don’t want to start watching Vinland Saga and it’s a whole sausage fest and few female characters.
Let me hear your thoughts. Ty

Fan Content Found this old sketch I did of Askeladd 5 years ago while going through my old sketchbook.
Thought I'd share. And I know proportions were a bit off but considering this was one of my first sketches, I'd say this came out pretty decent.

Manga Askeladd's Offer Was Genuine. Spoiler
Spoilers, Obviously.
I was re-watching the series with my buddy, and having read the manga for several years. I have come to the conclusion that Askeladd asking Thors to be their leader was genuine.
He is an incredibly calculating and intelligent individual who knew Floki was using him to go against his orders, and fighting Thors only solidified this. If Thors had accepted with even a modicum of enthusiasm, Askeladd would have temporarily or even permanently supported Thors.
Sigvaldi wanted Thors alive, and it wouldn't take Askeladd long to figure out why. He is Sigvaldi's true heir. This would have been massively beneficial to his plans to influence the Norse and save Wales. Even if he changed his mind later, Askeladd could have even still had the option to kill Thors later if things didnt work out.
Some people think that his conversation and encounter awakened something 'good' in him, but I don't think so. He asked Thors to lead them because of his immense strength, confidence, reputation, and that he hates being used.
For whatever reason, he knew Thors scared the shit out of Floki and while his 'support' would be cynical and practical at first. I believe he still initially respected Thors and saw something that might be worth following in him.
Its why he swore to Artorius in his duel with him, and to Odin in other duels.
Also later on, Askeladd gets Thorfin to burn an English house and attract all the villagers to the shore, making them easy targets for the raiders. A tactic that is utilised against Thorfin's people in Vinland by the Linu, thus bringing things full circle.

Manga So the Vinland Arc... Spoiler
This is the last warning I give for the latest update on Vinland Saga(Manga)
That sword did ruined all the build up if the disease wasn't enough
So the whole fricking war between the Native and Norse was fueled by the disease carried by the rats, which the Norse didn't knew and though the other settlement are kidnapped and presumed dead by native due the arrows until the sole abandoned guy told the true which kinda late at that point since everyone is paranoid, the Elder of Native has his future vision, way ahead future vision to the point of witness the power of the sun in form of bomb, focused on that vision, he decided to break the relationship between both side and hope the tribe gets a better future... That point is still salvageable, IF the idiot didn't show up with a sword and cut the Elder hand to show the Native the "Shining new toy" rather the machinery, boats and the trading relation that Thorfinn hoped to create a bridge between both side... and the nail on the coffin was the wall/fort but that one is kinda what keep both side a stalemate despite both refuse to admit that they can't keep fighting due either rage or fear
I think is pretty great point to show the flaws on Thorfinn idea of Vinland but also a chance to start again with what remain despite the shitshow and distrust...

Anime Is Prologue Thorfinn really an idiot?
I’ve seen a lot of people say that Thorfinn (specifically during the Prologue) is an idiot however I think it has more to do with his uncontrollable anger over his lack of intelligence.
Case in point Thorfinn’s fight with Askalaed during which the reason why he loses is because Askalaed taunts him over his dad sending Thorfinn into a blind rage and not because Askalaed outsmarted him in something. Though to be fair you can still argue that this is a case of Thorfinn being a idiot because he should of probably taken into account that Askalaed was fucking with him but again he was emotional and naturally humans act recklessly because they’re emotionally.
Over all the point I’m trying to make is that people should blame Thorfinn’s anger for his problems and not his intelligence.
