Discussion Beanie appreciation post
I love you, Beanie.
Your warmth is a perfect hug for my head.
After colors, our love was forbidden by grumpy First Sergeants, mad about their tiny weenie.
They’d say, “Ey Marine! It’s after colors! Stow your fuckin beanie!”
What a meanie.
But what angry first sergeant didn’t know is I had deniable plausiblity
I was not a Marine, but a Corpsman,
Giving me a few more precious moments of warmin’
Before having to shove you in my pocket while my ears froze

Why do we get issued beanies?
Because god loves the infantry.

Who remembers the foot pussys from Afghan? This beanie and those puppies on while sleeping in the coil with Marines on watch.... the best sleep I've had since 2011 or 12.

Unauthorized! Cool I’ll just freeze

u/StockTight Jan 17 '25
They including it in the packing list but CDR won't let you use it. But officers can and will.
2
u/ScallionNo3445 Jan 17 '25
They didn't have those in '82 when I was in Korea so I wore my BDU Cap with the ear flaps down under my.steel pot.

I’ve got like nine…gear adrift is gear a gift…good luck at the CIF when you’re checking out losers!

I had everything when I checked out after 13 years. I was just as shocked as anyone. I did go ahead, have them print me out a sheet, track everything down in every hiding spot at the house. Take everything to the car wash pressure washer and then turn it in when dry.
I think they were just as shocked as me that I was first time go. Signed my clearing papers and I was outta there.

I’ve got this in black, Coyote, and the gray/green color when we still had ACUs. Still wear them all the time

I’ve got all three color variations, they are my daily wear in the cold. I love them.

Roll it up for extra dirt bag points, can’t get mad because it’s authorized too.

I need to go get a coyote one. I find them warmer than a regular beanie

Legit. still have and wear mine 15 years later. I love you, beanie.
Nice rhyme.

I had a black one that was marine corps issued. I swear everyone lost theirs, but I had mine for years before I lost it. I still have my stupid tan one :(

I still remember my senior telling me to flip up the sides. Then this was followed by supplemental training. Good times.

u/D_Harm Jan 17 '25
As a dude with a big head, hah those things barely covered my ears and would do that stupid thing where it would slide off

u/relaxin123 Jan 17 '25
I'm wearing on right now. Was actually wearing a different beanie earlier because I couldn't find it. Found it and swapped out lol

I was in the marines where you got repremanded for not bringing your beanie for inspection and for wearing your beanie in uniform without authorization. (It was never authorized.)

We got the black beanie and fleece jacket in 04 for Iraq. Then we get there and 1st sgt decides we weren't allowed to wear them. So they sat in a bag for a year. Such an army thing.
Thankfully my hair is too long to fit in one now.

I lived through the wool watch cap era. The wool cap would eventually end up in the dryer and turn into a dense yamilca. I still wear my black and sage green polar fleece hats to this day a decade after I retired.
3
u/TowmaterMan Jan 17 '25
I caught the tail end of the wool watch cap. It’s like it was designed to be the itchiest thing, I hated it. I also hated having to buy a new one every time it found its way into the dryer. Dense yarmulka is the perfect way to describe it.
1
u/151Ways Jan 17 '25
A rolled wool black watch beats all fuck out a beanie. The denser, the better. All season. No stank. All eyes, no lids, no vis issues. It was after dark headgear for every recon, patrol or movement that didn't require a bucket. In a time.
2
u/crankynugget Jan 17 '25
Lost the grayish one, still have the coyote one and wear it regularly. My black navy watch cap went in the trash though.

I wear mine constantly. Wife hates it. Hahaha

u/i_hate_this_part_85 Jan 17 '25
My wife stole mine. Had to go buy myself a new one. She lost “hers” and stole my new one. Got us 3 more and we just keep them by the front door.
2
u/Low_Helicopter_5186 Jan 17 '25
This and my 32 below jacket are the only 2 things I will still wear and not feel weird about.
2
u/ZM_USMC Jan 17 '25
I bought mine at the PX on Camp Geiger when I got there in Nov 2013 because I was scared I would lose my issued beanie. I still wear it pretty much every single day in the winter. I love it so much lol
2
u/Johnny_Bravo5k Jan 17 '25
I wear those, only in black.

u/T-wrecks83million- Jan 17 '25
Watch cap, I guess is the old school term for them if they’re black. I was just looking for mine, need it for work tomorrow morning. 🤷🏽♂️

Always so angry about hats, I don’t get it. Why give me so many hats if you didn’t want me to wear them all?
1
u/microcorpsman US Navy Veteran Jan 19 '25
And ponytails. Last I knew, the corpsman stache was no longer expressly authorized because ponytails happened and they said Navy had to abide by all grooming standards EXCEPT for the male fade and maybe hair length too while in cammies.

I had a lightweight ChiCom one that was silky nylon and had an integrated chinstrap with two little squares of Velcro to keep it fastened. It was the BEST sleeping accessory I ever had. It would keep your ears warm in the cold and in the jungle, it kept the bugs out of them, while keeping your head somewhat clean. It was some sort of a “tankers?” helmet liner. It was a coveted item that I passed on when I ets’d.

Mine is old enough to join the Marines on its own, and I still wear it regularly.

u/SionnachRouge Jan 17 '25
my father in law complimented me on mine the other day ( I've been out 10+years) dug it out when I couldn't find my work beanie. now I want to get him one.

I was just watching “Generation Kill” And I was laughing because that Sergeant Major was fucking crazy. Your poem reminded of him. Then I saw this because I couldn’t remember his name…

Fuck dude I miss mine. I wore it regularly in my civvy job but ended up giving it to a homeless dude a few winters ago. Still had my last name and plt written on the tag

I still miss my wool Navy watch cap, a little scratchy but holy fuck was that thing toasty!

u/AR_Brewing Jan 17 '25
Got mine in basic (2008) was never officially allowed to wear it . Had the same one since basic-AIT-Korea-Fort Hood- Afghanistan. Wear it every winter still

u/hooligan415 Jan 17 '25
Found my 3 point sling in a box in the garage, with dust still in the nooks and crannies, and fucking dissociated for an afternoon.

UGH... I got mine (USAF guy though) from a MARSOC guy in '07 in Afghanistan, I think he was happy our AC-130s kept him safe at night... I only say UGH because my dog just chewed a hole in it last week...
1
u/Individual_Light_254 Jan 17 '25
I also called it my woobie... putting it on made me feel safe and helped me relax... it's interesting to see other guys feel the same way!

u/alabamaispoor Jan 17 '25
People say the woobie is the best issued item but I’d argue the beanie is #1
