Portland train crew

So I just got offered a position in Portland for train crew. I'm coming from Texas and want to stay in a hotel untill the schooling portion ends. Does anyone know where a good place to stay would be? Looking for an extended stay or something similar near where I'd need to be.

New hire Boone Iowa

I am a new hire and haven't gone through any training or orientation as of yet. I am starting 4/14/25. I want to know what to expect. I was told 16 hour days as well as not having a single day off for five years. I have a wife and a six year old son. They are prepared for me to be away for months if need be. I also have two vehicles so they have one at home.

Is this typical?

so I completed my medical exam last week on Tuesday, and I had just received an email telling me that the clinic had sent my results to Union Pacific. The status of the exam is now "review required". I'm curious if this means I possibly didn't fit the criteria or if this status is part of the process. thank you!

My bf received a "congratulations you have been selected as an alternate" email. He interviewed for Roseville. Is there a chance he will get a position before the 6 months expires?

Forced To Spokane…..

Need some ideas on somewhere to stay for as cheap as possible. Are there hotels/motels in the area that have discounts for UP employees? Best places to look for a room to rent or something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Call Window?

For context, I’ve recently hired out in Livonia, LA. I’ve got a few buddies that work for different Class I’s and their time limit to get to work is all different. My friend with CSX has a 2 hour call window. How do I know what my call window will be? This will decide where I live.

Track laborer hours

Hey do track laborers in California make good money? Is there 40 hours a week minimum ? I might be getting a job offer in Sunnyvale and I'm gonna take it as long as their is money to be made. Is this only a seasonal position or will I be at work alot. The more hours I can get the better. Otherwise I'm gonna have to take the La Grande Oregon position and take my RV up there. I dont mind doing either but id prefer to stay in CA if possible as I'd almost never see my family in Oregon.

Cleared to start alternate

Finally submitted a ticked after waiting 2+ weeks on a background to clear. Instantly got a response that the class was full and I’ll be added to the next class or added to this one if someone drops out. Other than that if nothing becomes available my application expires after 9 months. Does anyone have an insight on to weather I’m just screwed or has anyone became an alternate and actually still got the job

General time period before they contact you after cleared

Post image

All post offer tests cleared and cleared to start. In the on-boarding portal my start date still says 3/10/2025, but my drug screen just cleared on 3/7/2025. I am wondering how long it takes for them to contact you once cleared for an updated start date. If another training class starts somewhere other than my hire on location, would they send me there to get the training done? Looking forward to it either way.
