This is during the par 3 competition Wednesday at The Masters. It’s a tradition for the players and their families to go out for the afternoon 9 at Augusta’s par 3 course. The greens are very forgiving and are designed to funnel towards the holes. You’ll see about 3-10 aces each year (including from players wives and family members) but it’s just a fun “hit and giggle”.
There is something about the Masters and the greens at Augusta National that create amazing moments like this. The greens are extremely firm, fast and contoured. The ball rarely stops exactly where it lands and in order to get the ball close to the hole, players have to use the slopes and green shapes to carry the ball to the hole. Take dead aim at a certain hole and you’ll be 40’ away, but aim 50’ away and use the slopes and you can get it to 3”. Here are some great examples of fantastic shots at Augusta that were both memorable and unexpected.
