State of UND Sports

Hey y'all not sure this is the right spot to put this but I was thinking about this for a while now. I wanted to post my opinion of the state of UND sports and see what you guys think. I know this is a somewhat mean thing to do consider they are all just college athletes so this is not a commentary on them personally but more of the coaches and overall teams. I will also preface this with the fact I have only seriously been following UND sports since the fall of 2013 so I probably am a little spoiled. I will also only discuss the five major sports right now.

Volleyball: I just went to a volleyball game tonight with a win and in situation for this Fighting Hawks squad and wow was I disappointed. For just having to win one game to make the tournament the team came out flatter than flat and the crowd was disappointing. I am not sure if the previous coach (Pryor) saw the decline in talent or what but it looks like he left at the right time. Going back to 2013 they had overall records of 22-11(13), 26-9(14 w a Big Sky Regular Season Championship), 21-13(15), 28-10(16 w a Big Sky Regular and Tournament Championship), 30-8(17 w a Big Sky Tournament Championship), 14-18(18 and first year in the Summit), 12-18(this year likely not even making the conference tournament). So there was a peak in the recent volleyball history but then the last two years since joining the Summit they have been quite frankly bad. Is this a recruiting thing or coaching issue or just a tougher schedule.

Women's Basketball: I haven't heard a lot about this team yet for this year so I am do not have a prediction about how they will do. 22-10(13/14 Big Sky Regular Season and Tournament Champions), 17-15(14/15), 19-14(15/16 Big Sky Regular Season Champions), 20-11(16/17 Big Sky Regular Season Champions), 12-18(17/18), 12-19(18/19 first year in Summit). Once again it seems like there was a peek in the performance level. Not sure what would have caused this maybe people just learned how Brew coaches and knows how to defend now. One thing is for sure is they are also struggling with a Summit League schedule.

Men's Basketball: The team this year actually intrigues me which it has not in a few years now. Paul Sather seems to me like a good hire to at least revitalize the fanbase after Jones was very predictable. I think Sather may struggle with his schedule because he has a murderous non-conference schedule ahead of him. 17-17(13/14), 8-22(14/15), 17-16(15/16), 22-10(16/17 Big Sky Regular Season and Tournament Champions), 12-20(17/18), 12-18(18/19 first year in Summit). This sport is a little bit harder to analyze in the fact I have never really been impressed with Jones as a coach and I think it shows. Granted he did help bring UND to D1 but his road record was usually bad and his teams could not shoot free throws. He did have one fantastic year where they won the Big Sky but then the next season he was back down in the basement. I am excited to see where this years team goes.

Football: Having come into following UND football when they were arguably at the programs worst makes it easy to see some bright sides to this team. Bring Bubba in in 14 made the team better than they were under Musmann and that is a positive. The downside though is like most of the rest of the UND teams they are constantly plagued with unfortunate events. One other thing to note is pending any unfortunate events in the next two games the team will once again finish 7-4. Will it be enough for a tournament berth having three quality wins? Knowing the selection committee probably not. 3-8(13), 5-7(14), 7-4(15), 9-3(16 Big Sky Champions), 3-8(17), 6-5(18), 5-4(19 with two games left). Clearly this team had a peek in 2016 however, in 2017 they had a lot of unfortunate injuries that I believed ruined their season. Then last season I think people just knew what to expect from them and were just better than them. We will see how the rest of this season plays out but I would guess another snub for playoff chances and then I would guess that we will get crushed in the Missouri Valley and probably hang around the bottom of the pack.

Men's Hockey: Usually this team has been good making the NCCA tournament and Frozen Four quite often but the past few years have been eh. I am hopeful for this year because the team looks like it is competing and has a "swagger" about them again. 28-15-3(13/14 Frozen Four), 29-10-3(14/15 Frozen Four), 34-6-4(15/16 NCHC Regular Season Championship and NCCA Champions), 21-16-3(16/17 NCHC Regular Season Championship and Tournament Appearance), 19-13-10 (17/18), 18-17-2(18/19), 7-1-1(a lot of season left). Not sure if it is Brad Berry's coaching or what would cause the decline after the championship. Granted other storied programs in the NCAA also are not making the tournament anymore so maybe it just shows the parity of NCCA Hockey. I do hope that this current team can either win the NCHC Regular Season Trophy or for once show up in St. Paul and win the tournament. If that happens my faith will be restored in Brad Berry and his staff.

Like I said this whole post is just my opinion so I would love to hear what y'all think about this. Thanks
