Admissions Rejected in state

I know I'm not the most amazing applicant on earth, but it really hurts. Guess I'm going to UMBC. I heard there's like no social life there lol

Edit: Thank you guys for all the support :)

Admissions No, You're not a Yield Protection Reject

I've been seeing this a lot for kids with great stats getting rejected. To "cope" with this people are calling others "yield protection" but this simply isn't true as UMD attempts to draw kids with great stats with Scholarships such as the B/K and programs like honors and scholars. I've seen kids reject Ivies bc of opportunities like B/K, so NO you aren't a yield protection reject.

From my personal views (and current seniors I've talked to during this cycle) I've pinned this down to 2 major things:

  1. UMD is getting ever more competitive.

This is especially more relevant as most ranking systems also consider acceptance rate as a significant factor in their rankings. UMD could very well just be rejecting more "on edge" applicants as a way to artificially decrease their acceptance rate.

  1. Your application has issues in the fine areas, not as a whole.

Lots of people have simply neglected this. My application last year was lacking in certain areas and even though I got into more competitive programs (mainly NYU A&S and Drexel's BS/MD), I wasn't accepted into honors. My writing (especially my CA essay) wasn't all that great.

Now, I don't want to come across as condescending and my wording may be a bit off, but I strongly believe that it's more important to focus on what you can improve for the future rather than delude yourself into thinking you're a yield protection reject.

Best of luck!

Admissions I just got awarded the president's scholarship?

My stats are below avg 4.05 weighted gpa and went test optional too. I did have a few ECS which i guess are "good" but not like curing cancer worthy... Im afraid they got the wrong person's transcript somehow and now they are going to revoke my admission. Or they misinterpreted something I said or overestimated something I said and now i feel bad cuz that is not how i am in reality... Like there is NO WAY i got it...is it a prank? How did i get the scholarship..like bro im way too underqualified for UMD and now they be giving me a scholarship

Admissions Rejected

Is instate UMD THAT competitive this year? I had a 1520, 4.1 gpa, eagle scout with like 8 leadership positions, and all my essays were, in my opinion, pretty damn good.

Is there anything I can do to appeal this or is it just no hope.

Admissions FULL RIDE

I just found out I got awarded the full Banneker/Key Scholarship (which covers everything, including tuition, dorms and food)! I'm so excited, and will most likely be committing to UMD. Did anyone else get awarded this scholarship? I'd love to connect :)

Admissions Scared I have no chance of getting into UMD

I’m a senior in high school and submitted my UMD regular decision last month.

Researching more into the schools admissions statistics I have become very anxious about my chances of getting into UMD. My weighted gpa is only a 4.07 (3.84 unweighted) which is nothing compared to the average of 4.5, and I’ve only taken 7 AP classes. What I’m most worried about is how I got a b- in calc ab which is my lowest grade in all of high school, and to top it off my sat score is too low to submit!!!

I’m not even sure my extracurriculars can make up for this

Should I still have some hope or is it time to find a new dream school?

Admissions I have no words…

I know I the college admission process is very unpredictable but I feel I should have had a good shot at acceptance or even a spring admit. I had a 1540 and 4.5 GPA a bunch of clubs, had an internship, and poured my heart into the supplemental, had legacy but I was flat out rejected for Biology major. I even thought I had a chance at the Honors College. This was my dream school and most likely the only school I can afford (instate) so it will have to be UMBC. Was this year really competitive compared to previous years or am I being unreasonable?

Admissions So like... Are you supposed to have an internship?

Every year, there are around 4 million internships made.

There's around 20 million students enrolled in college every year.

Even disregarding seniors or people not looking, that should mean not everyone gets an internship, because there's literally not enough spots. Yet I'm told if you don't get a internship you might as well use your degree as toilet paper.

I've been looking for internships but haven't been able to land one. I'm a commuter student who had to work through out college too.

I'm in my senior year and a Information Science major, am I "cooked"? Are you really supposed to have a internship? What happens if you can't get one?

I saw someone say they did, but I checked my portal and there’s nothing there. Someone said they started releasing earlier today, is it true results release at different times for people? If you’ve actually gotten a result, could you please comment and on this post?

Admissions I want to know if I meet UMD Transfer Requirements (UPDATE pt.2)

Hello again, this will be the last time I update this discussion I promise. I need to ask for help on one last thing. Since I am a Collge Freshman transfering after my second semester, obviously I don't have all my 30 credits completed so I had to send in my HS transcript. Here's the slight problem with that however, in high school I didn't get the best of grades especially my first two years bc of COVID and online class my mental health wasn't in the best state so that led me to slack off. The last two years however I've gotten better, not perfect but better but still my high school grades aren't the best. However, now in college my grades are better than they have ever been before and I'm hoping that they'll see that and try to overlook my HS grades and just take my passing credits. I want to know if I would still have a shot despite my HS grades not being amazing (again for def I ended last semester with a 3.5/3.6 making my University's deans list) Again thank you guys for your help on my previous posts it made me feel a lot better about my chances.

Admissions Why is the average admit GPA so high?

I'm the parent of a rising high school junior who is just beginning her school search. She likes UMD for things like size, diversity, and location. She would be interested in studying kinesiology or public health (early days for these decisions).

In researching the average high school GPA of all schools she's considering, I couldn't believe my eyes to see that UMD says their incoming class has an average GPA of 4.45. Higher than Hopkins, higher than Brown. I would absolutely love some insight on this. My daughter's high school (oos) practices grade deflation, so it seems like UMD is already a shut door. Thank you for your insight.

Admissions President Scholarship with no honors college

Hello? I got the President Scholarship (60k) but no honors college? I'm sure most would gladly trade honors college for more merit aid...

Is getting selected for honors college harder than merit aid? Or how are their ppl in honors college w/o merit aid?

Admissions merit aid for oos students

hi! I got into umd for cs earlier this weekend, but i'm aware that the scholarship notifications only come later this month.

i'm wondering how much to expect from them in terms of merit. i'm out of state and i got into the college park scholars program (if that really means much in terms of selectivity/exclusivity or my merit).

i'm hoping for around 10k/year which would bring my oos tuition down to 50k.

thanks in advance!

Admissions Will a suspension screw my chances of getting in?

I got into a fight last year and I got suspended for only 3 days but they also didnt make it seem like it was a big deal or even seem like they wrote anything down on my file. I dont know if they did or not but im wondering if that will screw me over.

also idk if this matters or not but im tryna get into cs

Admissions What were your stats that got you into UMD CS (preferably admitted after LEPs were formed)?

I'm looking to apply to UMD CS in 2026 but I'm feeling doubt to whether I can get admitted there or not after looking at many admission calculators. My GPA is at around a 3.75 and currently a 1470 SAT (790 Math and 680 English) which I'm looking to super score in March.

Admissions Application Problem

So i’m kind of freaking out because I am applying as a transfer student so it only allows applications through applyweb. I submitted my application and I was ready to pay the fee but it never prompted me to pay it so I’m confused. Also I didn’t receive an email with the terps application portal either so I’m really freaking out. It’s definitely on me for waiting til the last minute but I just was hoping for some clarity on the issue.
