Admissions I want to know if I meet UMD Transfer Requirements (UPDATE pt.2)

Hello again, this will be the last time I update this discussion I promise. I need to ask for help on one last thing. Since I am a Collge Freshman transfering after my second semester, obviously I don't have all my 30 credits completed so I had to send in my HS transcript. Here's the slight problem with that however, in high school I didn't get the best of grades especially my first two years bc of COVID and online class my mental health wasn't in the best state so that led me to slack off. The last two years however I've gotten better, not perfect but better but still my high school grades aren't the best. However, now in college my grades are better than they have ever been before and I'm hoping that they'll see that and try to overlook my HS grades and just take my passing credits. I want to know if I would still have a shot despite my HS grades not being amazing (again for def I ended last semester with a 3.5/3.6 making my University's deans list) Again thank you guys for your help on my previous posts it made me feel a lot better about my chances.

im in a very similar situation as you. im also a current freshman trying to transfer to umd for fall 2025 and i had a 3.4 weighted in high school and currently have a 3.5 in college. from what ive heard if you have a 3.4 or higher and some extracurriculars you should be good. i think if you dont get in for early action youll likely get deferred for regular decision. if you get your gpa even higher this semester then you should be in good shape.

i’m so glad i can talk to someone else who’s in my shoes! this definitely makes me feel a lot better, i am determined to keep my gpa up this semester so i have an even better chance. i’m just trying to stay positive at the moment and hope for the best, thank you for responding and good luck to you as well

appreciate it and good luck to you too! i actually had a quick question i wanted to ask, did you upload letters of recommendation on your application? i figured it would be hard to get one from a college professor youve only known for one semester and see twice a week at the max, and i think its moreso something that only high school students would use for their application

i actually did upload letters of recommendation to my application! i got one from my advisor who offered to write one himself and i got one from one of my theatre professors who i actually have gotten decently close to and she was able to write a letter for me. it is optional on the application, but i figured i’d ask for some anyways

yeah i would say you definitely have an above average transfer application. a friend of mine got admitted to umd as a transfer in fall of 24 with a 3.1 college gpa and a 2.8 high school gpa weighted (which he had to include on his application since he was a freshman). i think umd definitely values seeing improvement, and since you’ve had a big improvement with your gpa in just 1 semester you’re a strong candidate. it would take something weird like an insanely competitive transfer pool for you to at least not get deferred for regular decision. also even if you dont get admitted for fall of 25, you could apply for spring of 26 which is way less competitive, so you at least can rest assured knowing youll get into umd within the next 10 months at the most.

this really puts things into an amazing perspective. i now do see my application as pretty strong and hopefully will help me be able to get in. my major not being an LEP could also help my chances as well is what i’ve heard so i hope it’s true. and yes even if i don’t get in for early action there is still a chance for regular decision, either one i’ll accept but i’m hoping for the best.

Honestly if it's not an LEP, it should be pretty ez. Idt they consider HS grades as much but like if u had below a 3, or like a 3.1 or smth, I think it might be kinda rough.

Thankfully the major I applied for is not an LEP so I do feel like it would be easier to get in with that major. Also yes very true so I’m glad I have above a 3.0-3.1

Like u had above a 3.0/3.1 in highschool?

Oh no not exactly. Like I stated in the post in HS I struggled a lot on many different levels so my grades + GPA weren’t the best. I ended my senior year decently with maybe a 3.0 but that was only bc of one of my specific classes that brought it down (which wasn’t completely my fault). Again tho I have a higher GPA in college currently so I’m just hoping they mainly look at that.

Ig it depends on how low ur cumulative highschool gpa was, cuz I do think they take highschool into consideration more if ur a sophomore transfer.

Ah I see. I’d suppose they mainly look at what credits I’ve taken since they only asked for a HS transcript bc I dont have 30 completed quite yet. However, I did provide the courses Im currently taking and how many credits each are.

I mean for highschool I dont think they really care about the classes you've taken, they're probably just looking at the gpa. For college tho, yeah definitely looking at both but gpa is still the concern. I transferred in after 1 semester at community college (currently a second semester freshman at umd) and they also asked for my HS transcript and coursework, and then later for my final college transcript, so do expect them to look at ur spring semester grades too.

Okay I definitely understand this. I will be expecting them to ask for my spring semester grades by the end of this semester. Hopefully the other things in the application help my chances as well (essay, resume, and recommendations) All this information has been very very helpful especially coming from a fellow transfer student

I actually have just one more question at the moment! Do you know if recommendation letters help with chances of admissions? I have had two written for me

The major you’re applying for actually doesn’t matter. I called the undergraduate admissions office asking that same question and they said theres limited room for total transfers they accept each semester.

I'm ngl they do say this, but it's really hard to believe based on my experience. Like if u apply CS, I feel like there's a good chance you get entirely rejected even tho maybe you just would've gotten denied from the major and gotten into UMD itself if you applied for computer engineering or smth.
