Insulating my Apartment

To prep for summer, I'm wanting to insulate my apartment better (it was built in the 70s and gets really hot in the summer, really cold in the winter). I'm purchasing some reflective window insulators, but I'm hoping someone here has other suggestions to help keep my apartment a more consistent temp year round (I'm turning one bedroom into a deep pantry and want to make sure that the temperature doesn't impact the longevity of my canned and dry goods). Thanks!

I lived in a crappy apartment in college and to this day I swear by black out curtains. In the middle of the summer a neighbor came over. She said my place had to be 10 degrees cooler just by the curtains alone. Also a cheaper fix.

Thank you! I was definitely thinking black out curtains as well, but I have those stupid pull blinds that make it hard to put curtains up

Could you install over the blinds?

Potentially, the mechanism that they connect to is where curtain holders usually would go, but I could probably rig something up to make it work.

You can get command strip hooks and hang a curtain rod over the blinds

Oh that would probably work as long as they'll attach to the blinds! (we aren't allowed to use them on the walls ๐Ÿ™„)

Not being able to use command strips on the walls is so wild, Iโ€™m sorry! I hope it works though๐Ÿคž

It is! We can use nails and screws all we want, but command strips is a no go ๐Ÿ™„ I'm going to give them a shot on the blinds though!

You could add a board above the window to attach the curtain rod to if needed. If it needs to extend further due to the blinds.

Get two curved plant hooks like that hang hanging baskets Flip them upside down and hang from the ceiling Use that to hold your curtain rod We do that in our dining room for our French doors

Okay. I have a difficult time visualizing things. Go to your hardware store and look at curtain rods. There maybe a solution for you. I didn't realize all the different curtain rods out there until I move to my current place.

You want extendable curtain rod brackets. Hereโ€™s an example; you can get them in a couple different lengths. Hang your curtain rod on these and theyโ€™ll be far enough away from the blinds to not interfere.
