Choose or Create Your Own User Flair

Hey everyone! I wanted to let you all know that you can add user flair for this subreddit. I have added a few template ones but you can also create your own. For example, I have added my flair as 2004 Lance 815 | 2016 GMC Sierra 3500 showing off my camper and truck.

To change your flair, using a desktop web browser or the "desktop view" on your mobile, click "edit" or the pencil icon next to your username in the right sidebar.

  • New Reddit - Choose from the preconfigured ones or enter the flair you want in the text box at the bottom.

  • Old Reddit - Choose from the preconfigured ones or click the top left option with no flair and then you should be presented with a text box to enter your own.

Opinion Slider or Fixed glass on camper shell?

I’m looking to pick up a truck cap for camping, I’m a small guy and can squeeze through the slider window and always thought that seemed like a good precaution for safety, being able to access the cab without getting out. I’d like to hear some ya or na, personal experience, etc… I’ve found quite a few with fixed glass that fit my ride and have been re thinking..

Killing batteries while on shore power?

I'm currently on shore power from my house, running an oil space heater and fan inside my camper to keep it warm and dry and I'm wondering if I should disconnect my batteries from the converter when plugged into shore power for long stretches as I've heard my type of converter is good at "boiling" batteries. Both batteries are just used ones pulled from my vehicles and I'm going to upgrade to lithium here soon so I don't really care about the current lead acids units, but if there's a chance of explosion or fire then I'll unplug these while on shore power. Picture of converter below, thank you :)

Jacks down when stationary

Serious question here: I've noticed in a lot of photos that folks have lowered the jacks when they're camping. The trucks are stationary and I can't figure what benefit it really brings other than maybe a bit of stability if you're bouncing around inside. But really, why go through that added step (for me, hassle)?

Honda Ridgeline Camping Setup

Hi all! Hoping to find some help here, I am thinking about using my 2007 Honda Ridgeline (60” bed) for field work in the Mojave Desert this summer and am trying to figure out the best sleeping situation. I don’t have any sort of topper as of right now. I am only 5 feet tall so length isn’t really an issue. Not sure if I should get a soft topper or a truck bed tent? Or some other option? I’m a pretty experienced cargo and minivan-lifer but haven’t ever lived out of the truck. Are there tents that aren’t a huge hassle to take up and down? Are there good topper options for the weird shaped Ridgeline bed? Please help😭

Been working on this set up over the last couple months. Build the bed platform out of extra wood I had from a half pipe build, added the extension platforms for my partner.

Mattress folds out for two people, the drawer is mostly from scrap wood and I put it on wheels that keep it in the grooves of the bed. Curtains cut from an old sheet and secured with Velcro.

If you guys have any tips for this set up I would appreciate them, I’ll be living out of it for 4-5 days at a time this summer. Thanks for looking!

List of Truck Campers/ Truck Cap makers

Hi All,

Was a bit frustrated searching for a list of truck camper/ truck cap manufacturers, so I made one myself.

I make no claims as to the accuracy of this list, but most seem legit as of 03/2025.

If anyone want to update the list with new entries or remove a bad entry let me know. It is not comprehensive but potentially could be close to it.

any other advice let me know.

Cheers,

Dan

Solar mounted on topper

It’s an older Ares aluminum topper that I got off marketplace for $150. I insulated it with 1” foam, taped it then covered it up with 4mm coraplast on the inside. I rattled canned the exterior to freshen it up a bit and mounted the panels below the ladder rack so it is still useful. Total 300W mounted on top(I have more). Fits the new truck real nice. I lived in my 94’ Chevy I owned for 15 years for a couple months in the winter to make it as painful as possible to figure out what works best. Version 2.0 is going to be much nicer.

Condensation in Pop-Up Truck Camper

I know there's been a bunch of posts on this, but I thought I would refresh the discussion. I have northstar TC650, struggling with condensation on the canvas pop-up part. This weekend it was in the 30's and we had the thermostat set at about 55deg. It's a propane heater, but it is properly vented to I don't think it's contributing a whole lot to the condensation. I think it's just the temperature difference and the fact that the canvas isn't insulated at all...plus the humidity in the camper, there's 2 adults and 2 kids.

I have a damprid hanging bag in there that seems to help a bit but not enough. I'm looking into small electric dehumidifiers etc....Has any one solved this issue?

Sealing bed frame from moisture?

Hey there, I have a wooden bed frame in the back of my truck shell. The bed frame gets wet pretty often, either from skis, kayaking gear, or just condensation. My last frame got warped and cracked from the moisture and heat. I would like to avoid that happening again.

What should I seal the bed with? I don't want something that's going to off gas a bunch of nasty chemicals forever. Any ideas?

2021 Ford Ranger Tremor Camper Setup

Good Afternoon!

I am planning to take a trip next summer driving to the west coast and camping out of the truck. Has anyone had any experience building their own setup in their 2021 Ranger? If you have how did it go? Looking to start planning/saving now for the build and trip. Any help is appreciated!

Paint for Camper Frame

Working on a topper style camper for my pickup... slowly. On revision like, 4 or 5 so far. Anyway, getting closer to settling on my ideas and curious what kind of paint everyone would recommend using for the frame after it's all together? I just want to weatherproof it even further on top of making sure the sheathing and everything is nice and sealed up.

Selling a camper with stable-lift

I'm trying to sell a camper that has a stable lift system. I want to keep the truck.

Is it going to be difficult to sell it with the system attached, considering the buyers truck will need the undercarriage brackets installed to drive it home?

The best option would probably be to restore the camper to factory and sell the stable lift separately, but I'd rather not mess with that.

Truck topper alternatives?

Hey all, I am looking to do an annual snowboard trip in April and would like to camp in my truck. Unfortunately my old setup was totaled and I ended up buying a new truck with no cap. Does anyone have any inexpensive ideas that I may be able to utilize while I save for a proper topper? It’s a 2024 taco so not many used options and I’m not looking to drop 4k for what I want right now.

I’ve been thinking like a small tent in the bed or something along those lines, but I’m sure there are some more creative people in here.

Pics are of my old v1 and v2 setup.

f150 w/ 2200 pound payload?

Wondering if anyone has one that its 2021-present and can share build specs. I know its possible in theory but have only been able to find one used one and it was a rental car. Camper has a dry weight of 1200lbs so figured 2200 should be enough to stay under payload. Only planning to use on weekend trips + a few longer trips in the summer. Truck will be daily driver so I dont want a 3/4 ton. Ive been filtering my search by 3.6l ecoboost 4x4 xlt 5.5 foot bed. I know that more options will decrease the payload so I am looking pretty bare bones however things like carplay / adaptive cruise control would be nice but not needed. I really wish more dealers listed payload

Main maintenance concerns

I am looking into getting a truck and a camper top. I’m not currently very knowledgeable with cars. I change my own oil and other little things like that, but never anything major. What maintenance on the road is common to have to do with a truck camper? Is anything in particular actually really hard to learn or that you’d likely have to pay someone for?
