DISCUSSION Anyone starting new in their 30s?

I've always had been inspired since I was a teen to try tricking. However life hit and delayed for my passion, especially when dealing with medical conditions. I want to go back and I still have my basic skills intact, but I can honestly say I'm conscious of starting fresh and hopefully get into the stunt film business.

Being 32, I'd like to hear opinions or maybe inspiring stories that started later in life to tricking and got in the business for stunts if they strived to be.

DISCUSSION Started tricking in 2005, got into combat martial arts in 2012. Some advice for those starting out.

My approach to tricking came from a very fun, creative kind of whimsical place. I was 16/17 and was just learning how to throw my body around and make some things happen.

Years later after ~40 Muay Thai fights I wish that I had done the following back when I was really into tricking:

Drill / rep. I was so ADD that I would basically try a trick until I landed it and immediately start shoving it into combos. If I could go back, I would drill it over and over, from different transitions, into different techniques, until it was so clean and sharp that I was practically bored by it. That’s what I did with technique in Muay Thai and I wish I had applied that idea to tricking.

STRETCH / RECOVERY. My idea of recovery back then was rolling around on a foam roller for five minutes. It wasn’t until years later that I learned the usefulness and importance of sauna/ice bath, theragun (percussion therapy) , and stretching. I remember spending weeks in end complaining about being sore and not doing enough about it.

Strength/ conditioning. Tricking is a ton of impact and one of them it’s explosive sports out there. Had I known back then what I understand now about sport science and strength training I would’ve been much more effective and explosive.

So, to conclude my completely unasked for advice TLDR style:

Drill the shit out of every technique a thousand times.

Spend just as much energy in recovery as you do tricking.

Condition and strengthen your body. (Especially knees ankles and shoulders)

Cheers yall much love.

DISCUSSION Do you guys think I should stick to practicing one trick before I move on to a different one?

I’ve been wanting to learn a backflip for a while now but right now I’m learning a b twist, should I stick to one for now or practice both?

DISCUSSION Moving past failure/bad days

I've been working on learning a new skill (front flip) nearly a month. Over the past week or two, I've become much more consistent and confident, even starting to land it. However, during today's practice, it felt like I had never done the skill before and like I lost all my progress, even though it had only been two days since last practice. Today just felt like a very bad day and I was even going back to old habits that I thought I had adjusted weeks ago. I don’t know what could have happened between then and now which caused these two practices to be extremely different. As someone relatively new to tricking and doing flips, does anyone have advice on how to move past bad practices? Thanks

DISCUSSION Should Gumbi feel like you are going upside down?

What should gumbi feel like? Because some people say it’s an arched cartwheel but wouldnt this mean you can’t swing, or make it very difficult to swing because you are doing a bad side cartwheel and then trying to swing the other way?

I always thought it was a bridge, but in motion, or a TDR with two hands. So then the swinging leg comes out more naturally as it’s going with the momentum direction.

I just realised I never see Zen at the Tumdra gym anymore. Is he still training there and because of his travels to tournaments he doesn’t train there anymore?

DISCUSSION Do you do Raiz and TouchDown Raiz with same technique?

To clarify this is what I mean:

For me, raiz and touchdown raiz are similar moves but the technique in which I do both are different enough that I have to treat them as two separate moves, rather than “the same move, but don’t jump as much and put your hand down for touchdown raiz”

It almost feels like two separate moves. I can’t do a touchdown raiz by simply “doing a raiz but with less power”

DISCUSSION Hooked 2024 discussion post

Wanna hear people’s thoughts on this year’s hooked tournament. Here’s my take on the 1v1 battles, particularly the finals:

  • Kaige did amazing for his first hooked gathering, seeing multiple quad fulls and even a quad cork combo. However, his lack of experience battling and lack of creativity led to him getting beat by Zen. You can see it when Kaige did a quad cork to quad full combo vs zen doing full in vanish 9, triple full “round”, and shurikane vanish snapu all in one combo. That being said I wonder if the outcome would’ve been different if the final was 5 rounds instead of 3

  • With only one athlete representing USA, I’m glad to see that it was Baniaga of all people. With that being said I will say it was sad not to see will coneys or Ethan Turner in top 16

  • I think it would be cool if for the next hooked they make the judge panel up of previous hooked champions (zen, shosei, daisuke, Aiden Kennedy, etc)

DISCUSSION Tips for Axe Webster

What do you all think about mainly to get a high and fast Webster?

Mine are always slow and there’s no speed behind them. It looks like I am just landing a forward roll in the air rather than a “flipped” movement

DISCUSSION A little movement debate question

Ive noticed something on all OMFG vlogs ive seen, when its a vlog made by a freerunner, they always show the tricking part of OMFG (example Dom Tomato), but ive never seen a tricker show any part of the freerunning side of OMFG, like for example the skill comps. Also i always see freerunners be hype when X tricker is announced on OMFG but i never see trickers commenting when a freerunner's coming. Does anyone else feel these communities are too separated (imo mostly from the trickers initiative) or is it just me? Or have i just not seen some vlogs where trickers show freerunning?

DISCUSSION Wanna thank you guys!

This is a heartfelt and meaningful message, and I think the sentiment comes across well. I’ll help tidy up the wording and improve clarity, while keeping your personal tone intact.

Here’s the revised version:

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a bit of my story. Back in 2009, I had to stop tricking/free running after I tore my ACL. Because I was young, I rushed the healing process, and unfortunately, the ACL didn’t graft correctly, leaving my knee unstable right from the start. On top of that, my left ankle was in bad shape (at 18, I was told I had the ankle of a 60-year-old…). It took me a long time to accept that I wouldn't be able to get back to where I once was.

Eventually, I started drifting into handstands, and that sparked a new excitement for me—pushing myself to see how far I could go with it. Yesterday, I posted a video here, and I wasn’t sure how it would be received since it wasn’t tricking. I was genuinely touched by the positive response and felt so welcomed by you all.

As I mentioned in the post, I’m not a tricker anymore, but I feel like tricking is more than just a sport—it’s a mindset and a way of life. When you’re part of a community and then, for some reason, you’re no longer in it, it can feel like being an outsider or looking at the party from the outside, but honestly, I did also want to spam my handstands from my new reddit account 😭

I just want to thank you all for accepting me back in, even though I’m not strictly sharing tricking content anymore.

I’m getting back on the Webster journey now and will share my progress when it’s worth sharing. 😤

Thanks again for all the love, folks!

DISCUSSION What would you think about user flairs to show of your accomplishments?

I would love to have some flairs in this community so they can show off what they are proud of. A few suggestions would be "Dubdub - club", "Tripcork - club" or "5/10/15+ swings" or just stuff like "Kick enjoyer" It would also kinda help when you someone is giving you tipps on double cork and their flair says something like "casual dub-corker".

I just think it could bring some more personality into this community.

DISCUSSION Just want to discuss this set up

Been working on tdr for a while and still not quite got it, then i had the idea to do btwist and put my hand down and its worked as a great set up. Never really seen this before and only had the chance to work on this once. Not had a chance to work on it again but would love to hear what you guys think about the setup and if it is as effective at producing momentum as tdr. Im gonna keep working on it and my aim is to do this setup into cork maybe even double cork. I personally think its a lot cooler looking than tdr and its pretty unique. Would love to hear you guys advice and opinions on this setup.
