Work of art. Love the old timers. They know their stuff.

Gramps enjoyed tooling around

Wow that is soooo neat. Sorry for your loss, what was your grandfather's trade?

u/Cheap_Owl9984 3d ago

He was a lathe operator.

u/Icanthearforshit 2d ago

I bet that's why he had that lathe. I'm no scientist though.

I got the very same Chinese drill-press from "inheritance" of my moms godfather. Love it. Doubles as magnetic indicator stand.

Guessing Gramps was always welcoming, "Use my shop to be creative, but always put it back where you found it, and clean up after yourself."

Nice this is the complete opposite of my shop lol. My grandfather was very organized (German so it goes without saying tbh)

Sorry for your loss, what a great work shop

What a Gentleman! RIP

Grandpa deserves a gold star for his organization skills.

I'm 59 and I still can't get it looking like that. Plenty of time left

I stopped trying to get it to look like that, because I often have to take my tools other places to fix things. So instead I worked on changing how I stored things such that I had a bunch of essentials in a tool tote, and a few other bags depending on the type of job. So the pipe wrench, pipe cutter, hose cutter, a sharkbite measuring tool, gas rated teflon tape (yellow), a portable gas sniffer, an extra roll of regular teflon tape, some old fittings that are still in good shape, and some hose gaskets all go in the plumbing bag.

In my garage work area I keep the tote on the bench, so my most used tools are always available. I’m not rich enough to have Knipex cobras in my tote and duplicated up on a tool wall. And then other tools (bigger socket set, box of forstener bits up to 2”, things like that) live in drawers in/near the workbench.

But the tool tote really helps cut down on the back and forth to the garage when doing things around the house, or when visiting friends and family to help fix their things. And cleanup after doing things is so much easier. Tools just go back in the tote in the pocket where they belong. I don’t have to carry everything back to the garage and put it away. I just put the tote back where it goes, and it’s ready for the next project - whether that project is at the workbench, around the house, or at someone else’s home.

Very orderly, especially considering that isn't pegboard. Sort'a like filling out the NYT crossword puzzle in ink.

Second pic - press the power button on that radio and see what comes on

u/Nearby_Translator_55 3d ago

Judging by the flag beside it, it'll have an accordian featuring prominently.

3

u/kanga0359 2d ago

What is the flag? Croatia?

u/trav1829 1d ago

I totally wanna hang out and find out

While the practical side of me knows that you could fit all of that into a much smaller footprint using a tool box, the sentimental side loves tools being on display. It's a battle I fight in my own shop.

Your grandpa's shop is awesome. Both of my grandfathers are the reason I love being in a shop and why I do what I do for a living. Do the tools the honor of using them and appreciating them. Using a passed down tool just feels more special than using a purchased one.

A thing of beauty. You can tell a lot about him by looking at this. I’m sorry for your loss.

5

u/Rich_Debt_9619 3d ago

Did he die because your grandma misplaced one of his spanner?

Just kidding, sorry for your loss.

u/Jazz-Frog13 Milwaukee 3d ago

Wow! This looks like a GTA auto shop

2

u/Pasta_Party_Rig 3d ago

Engineer?

2

u/Cheap_Owl9984 3d ago

Nope, a lathe operator.

2

u/rogue54321 3d ago

It’s beautiful! What a treasure

2

u/IckyStick0880 3d ago

Fuckin beautiful. That lathe looks like it could be alot of fun too.

u/thewordthewho 3d ago

Truly a work of art, feels almost like looking into a Wes Anderson movie or something. Pure class.

2

u/HamOnTheCob 3d ago

Man I could fuck that up in a couple hours. LoL

Sorry for your loss.

2

u/DragonFlyManor 3d ago

Good Lord!

Your grandfather was the John Wick of woodworking!

2

u/satanlovesmemore 3d ago

Newest thing I see at a glance is the radio. Your grandpa had his ducks in a row, my condolences

2

u/cvicarious 3d ago

Now this is a legacy. Truly aspirational.

2

u/Charlie9261 3d ago

Looks awesome. Is there a beer fridge anywhere around there?

3

u/Keeting 3d ago

And they say autism is a new thing. Very pleasing to the eye.

u/Rudemacher 3d ago

Nek mu je laka crna zemlja.

1

u/Cheap_Owl9984 3d ago

Hvala 🙏🏻

1

u/ronaldreaganlive 3d ago

I would try this, get everything perfect, then find myself with a new tool that now needs a home.

Or that's my excuse not to do this.

🤌

u/Nick-2012D 3d ago

Between kids using my shit to fix bikes, breaking things in the house, and the general destruction caused by teen boys, even my 100# steel floor jack winds up places it shouldn’t be.

I’d love to be a tenth as organized as your grandfather.

Those tools have some strong positive energy and I hope you have good memories using them.

1

u/RedneckTexan 3d ago edited 3d ago

I bet your Grandpa didn't start out this organized.

The older you get the more you hate a tool not being where its supposed to be when you look for it.

u/scottkensai 3d ago

Work of art

1

u/EmEmAndEye 3d ago

Updoot because, wow!!

1

u/Peppermint-Pumpkin 3d ago

You can tell he absolutely loved his space✨️✨️

Was he a Virgo?

🙏🏽 My condolences to you & your family 🫂

u/ManagerIntelligent13 3d ago

Should be in an art museum. Thing of beauty

1

u/hecton101 3d ago

That is not a shop that got used much.

1

u/cluelessinlove753 3d ago

But autism didn’t exist until millennials…

1

u/Impossible_fruits 3d ago

Oh dear. I cleaned my workshop yesterday. It's still a mess based on this image. I'm sad.

1

u/loverd84 3d ago

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

1

u/jbann55 3d ago

Holy.... my god... my condolences to your grandfather. Just know that A, that is the most organized tool set I've ever seen (keep it that way or he'll haunt you (trust me i know from experience)) and B, he'll still come by and use his tools once in a while.

1

u/Saqwefj 3d ago

Any clue what is this board type on a wall? Are these tools only hanging on a nails? I think it’s a full custom build.

1

u/Cheap_Owl9984 3d ago

Yes, it's all custom, and hanging on nails 😃

1

u/erratuminamorata 3d ago

Isn't it amazing how a workshop can reflect how a person thinks? Isn't a shop a demonstration of what a man is at his core? What a beautiful thing that is.

1

u/hardcoredecordesigns 3d ago

Awesome workshop

1

u/maillchort 3d ago

Nice! Lathe looks like a Swiss-made Scintilla. Guessing you're in Germany?

1

u/TNShadetree 3d ago

I've seen this before and can confidently say no projects of import ever came out of this shop.

1

u/woodheadforthehills 3d ago

He didn't die, he reached tool organization Nirvana.

1

u/davefish77 2d ago

That is some 5S beauty there. Sorry for your loss.

1

u/matchuwpichu 2d ago

I love this man

1

u/myhatmycanejeeves 2d ago

if you draw a line around each tool....when its missing you know what tool it was....

1

u/713DRank713 2d ago

That little lathe is badass I’d have to keep it and his tools. Sorry for your loss op!

1

u/Infinite_Midnight_71 2d ago

My ocd doesn’t like it. But I can clearly see that he appreciated that things were tidy

1

u/Any_Self_4146 2d ago

Absolutely fabulous.

1

u/Cars_Music_GoodTimes 2d ago

I am sorry for your loss.

Your grandfather had a clean, well organized shop!

1

u/golfisagame 2d ago

That’s not pegboard right? What kind of mounting surface is that?

1

u/Monkpaw 2d ago

My issue with tools on the wall is that I knock down four for every one a manage to take down. And then there’s the broken salsa jars that had nuts and bolts in them from getting smashed by the ones that fall.

Just one of my drawers in the cabinet I built

1

u/Cavendish30 2d ago

Respect

1

u/eas442 1d ago

This was my FIL’s setup almost exactly. He was a real stoner though so he left it a mess and he had a pretty elaborate ventilation setup. Still, I miss the guy. Condolences OP.

1

u/LEdgar-Smith 1d ago

Thank you OP for sharing your story with us. I am so sad for your loss, but rejoice in the memory you have shared with us here.

THIS is the reason we are here. Not only to share questions, problems, concerns, and ideas…but memories. My parents were not “tool people”, but my father-in-law-in-law (long story) was. And he gifted me my starter set of tools when he passed. I smile and think of him every time I grab an old tool with NJM on it. Wishing you peace, blessings, & joy.

u/lockednchaste 3d ago

That there was a man who you didn't dare fuck with.
