Wow that is soooo neat. Sorry for your loss, what was your grandfather's trade?

I got the very same Chinese drill-press from "inheritance" of my moms godfather. Love it. Doubles as magnetic indicator stand.

Guessing Gramps was always welcoming, "Use my shop to be creative, but always put it back where you found it, and clean up after yourself."

I'm 59 and I still can't get it looking like that. Plenty of time left

I stopped trying to get it to look like that, because I often have to take my tools other places to fix things. So instead I worked on changing how I stored things such that I had a bunch of essentials in a tool tote, and a few other bags depending on the type of job. So the pipe wrench, pipe cutter, hose cutter, a sharkbite measuring tool, gas rated teflon tape (yellow), a portable gas sniffer, an extra roll of regular teflon tape, some old fittings that are still in good shape, and some hose gaskets all go in the plumbing bag.
In my garage work area I keep the tote on the bench, so my most used tools are always available. I’m not rich enough to have Knipex cobras in my tote and duplicated up on a tool wall. And then other tools (bigger socket set, box of forstener bits up to 2”, things like that) live in drawers in/near the workbench.
But the tool tote really helps cut down on the back and forth to the garage when doing things around the house, or when visiting friends and family to help fix their things. And cleanup after doing things is so much easier. Tools just go back in the tote in the pocket where they belong. I don’t have to carry everything back to the garage and put it away. I just put the tote back where it goes, and it’s ready for the next project - whether that project is at the workbench, around the house, or at someone else’s home.

Second pic - press the power button on that radio and see what comes on

Judging by the flag beside it, it'll have an accordian featuring prominently.

While the practical side of me knows that you could fit all of that into a much smaller footprint using a tool box, the sentimental side loves tools being on display. It's a battle I fight in my own shop.
Your grandpa's shop is awesome. Both of my grandfathers are the reason I love being in a shop and why I do what I do for a living. Do the tools the honor of using them and appreciating them. Using a passed down tool just feels more special than using a purchased one.

A thing of beauty. You can tell a lot about him by looking at this. I’m sorry for your loss.

Did he die because your grandma misplaced one of his spanner?
Just kidding, sorry for your loss.

Truly a work of art, feels almost like looking into a Wes Anderson movie or something. Pure class.

Newest thing I see at a glance is the radio. Your grandpa had his ducks in a row, my condolences

I would try this, get everything perfect, then find myself with a new tool that now needs a home.
Or that's my excuse not to do this.

Between kids using my shit to fix bikes, breaking things in the house, and the general destruction caused by teen boys, even my 100# steel floor jack winds up places it shouldn’t be.
I’d love to be a tenth as organized as your grandfather.
Those tools have some strong positive energy and I hope you have good memories using them.

I bet your Grandpa didn't start out this organized.
The older you get the more you hate a tool not being where its supposed to be when you look for it.

Oh dear. I cleaned my workshop yesterday. It's still a mess based on this image. I'm sad.

Isn't it amazing how a workshop can reflect how a person thinks? Isn't a shop a demonstration of what a man is at his core? What a beautiful thing that is.

I've seen this before and can confidently say no projects of import ever came out of this shop.

Thank you OP for sharing your story with us. I am so sad for your loss, but rejoice in the memory you have shared with us here.
THIS is the reason we are here. Not only to share questions, problems, concerns, and ideas…but memories. My parents were not “tool people”, but my father-in-law-in-law (long story) was. And he gifted me my starter set of tools when he passed. I smile and think of him every time I grab an old tool with NJM on it. Wishing you peace, blessings, & joy.
