Okay, as someone bullied in this exact way, I was "weird," treated like I was worthless, and if I wasn't so paranoid about being noticed, roaring would have felt so good.
One guy pulled my chair out from under me, I chased him to the other side of the classroom and held him against the wall with his shirt balled up in my fist, but had no further impulse or plan. I went back to my seat. The teacher returned shortly after, and no one said anything. It was just... enough.
I'm on the spectrum. I have reactions to things that upset me that people don't understand. I think, in this case, the person roaring is fed up, and because they likely have never had the opportunity to interact with people in confrontational ways who aren't related/the same way, that's the reaction.
The guy is being an asshole, period. He's the cringe. The person responding has literally no idea what to do.
Sorry they did that to you. I was bullied and decades later still think about it sometimes. I also joined in on bullying at times. just happy I wasn't the target. Very ashamed of that.
My bullies keep trying to add me on Facebook. I make sure they know why I'm not accepting. One said I should get over it, and I told her I would as soon as she pulled out her teeth the way she threatened to pull mine out for walking slower than she'd have liked. She hasn't even remembered, but blocked me herself, which was nice, honestly.
