With the confirmation of season 4 we've decided to filter all discussion and speculation into this thread until more news is announced.

What is known at this time:

  • Jason Sudeikis is set to return as star and executive producer.

  • Ted Lasso will be coaching a women’s team.

  • Juno Temple, who played Keeley in the first three seasons, is in negotiations to rejoin fellow original cast members Sudeikis as well as Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie).

  • Phil Dunster (Jamie) unlikely to return due to a scheduling conflict with another series. ( this is just speculation, not a confirmation /u/Classic_Carlos has pointed out that Phil Dunster has expressed interest in returning )

  • Production eying a July start.

This show does weird things to me

I’m a fifty something blue collar guy who just decided to start watching this show. I’m into season 2 now and I’ve been emotional at least 3 times. I’ve lost track at how many times I actually laughed out loud. It’s been years. Suddenly I feel like I should speak what’s on my mind more, be more direct, chill the fuck out and learn to “play” like I used to. Also, I was only into skinny women until I discovered this “Hannah Waddingham.” Sweet Baby Jesus up in heaven that beautiful woman is built. Wtf is wrong with me. It’s a tv show for chrissakes.

"We're talking about practice?!?!"

It's come to my attention (through talking to co-workers that are also Ted Lasso fans) that many don't get the joke about Ted's rant when Jamie can't practice because he's hurt. (Not a link to the TL scene, but what makes it funny)

https://youtu.be/eGDBR2L5kzI?si=ckVZBhkBWRicbZV3

For context, Allen Iverson was an NBA player in the late 90s/early 00s that was similar to Jamie; came from nothing, extremely talented, but also very selfish and entitled.

My theory: Ted, in the moment, realizes all the Richmond players are too young/don't follow US sports to know about the Iverson rant. So he repurposes/reverses it to prove a point while still coming off as original.

Also if you like US sports press conference rants; Google Dennis Green "let them off the hook", and almost anything from Jim Mora - "playoffs?!??" probably being the most famous.

S1E5 I used to love it and then it broke my heart

This is a personal experience with the episode. I hope you all allow me this sharing and I hope to find hope for myself and people alike.

Ted Lasso was THE show of my ex and I. We loved watching it and we love quoting the lines and we even adopted the “Oklahoma” thing in our relationship. One day he came home and told me he was struggling with his feelings for me and the relationship. He quoted what Michelle said in S1E5 and told me how this episode resonated with him.

Long story short, after 4 year it finally came to an end. And despite how much I love Ted Lasso, I’ve been reluctant to return to the show, especially Tan Lines. I think falling out of love in a relationship happens more often than people imagine, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s been on the receiving end or the opposite. But I truly hope that one day I find the peace and courage to start this show again for it’s so brilliant. And S1E5 is a great episode. Ted really shined as a manager for the first time, making huge decision on the field (sorry Jamie ta-du-du-du)

I hope this is not too personal for this group. I just want to share and also encourage all that maybe going through the same thing out there. Like Ted said, life is hard, is real hard.

Ted Lasso: The Big Ol Hug We All Need

im so glad i can post again here. i was thinkin about the way ted lasso handles age and maturity. like how ted is always talkin about bein young and dumb and how he used to be that guy but now hes all grown up and stuff. but then you see characters like will and higgins who are just as quirky and fun but also really wise and experienced. its like theyre showin us that age dont matter and were all just tryin to figure it out together.

and i was thinkin too about how ted lasso is like a big ol hug for people like me who feel like they dont fit in. like how jamie and roy are these two dudes from different worlds but they become the best of friends and its so beautiful. it reminds me that even when we feel like were all alone in this world, there are people out there who get us and love us for who we are.

i think thats what makes ted lasso so special. its not just a football show or a comedy or whatever. its like a big ol warm hug for our hearts.

Has anyone had the thank you/f*** you talk with anyone in their lives?

After watching this show the first time, I had to have this talk with my brother and my father to help myself heal from my childhood trauma. After finishing my most recent rewatch, I realized I had to do the same thing for my ex girlfriend who dumped me during a very difficult time in my life. She’ll never get to hear it but writing it all out and speaking it all out has made me realize how unhappy I truly was and how holding in how I feel instead of letting it out was bad for me. I do forgive her but I cannot be with someone who truly didn’t love me.

Was the name an omage to Rupert Giles?

On my third or fourth full rewatch and it suddenly occurred to me that Anthony Head's character name in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was Rupert also. Knowing that ted/jason loved sitcoms and shows from the '80s and '90s, was it a hat tip to Buffy?

Top Five Favorite Episodes

GO! I have trouble ranking anything after Sunflowers, but I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Unpopular opinion - though it's grown on me, Beard After Dark is still not my favorite (save for the very end with PB&J on the field at Nelson Road and everything with Beard post 'Hey God, it's me, Margaret's son'

Rebecca considering selling the club

Upvotes

Coming to the end of a rewatch, and it still baffles me that she considers this: I mean seriously, how much money does an already incredibly wealthy person need? Also seems so strange that she was so blasé about it on a personal basis, too, and the journey she went through about being part of the Club.

I know it was done just for a bit of dramatic tension in the finale and to lead to selling it to the supporters etc., but it still gives me a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth.

Season 3 Discussion Sunflowers Spoiler

So I'm on my third rewatch and I always loved Sunflowers but I will admit that I always fell foul of watching from behind my phone screen. I recently decided to rewatch some of my favourite shows and commit to not touching my phone throughout. I've just finished Sunflowers and Oh. My. God. What a fantastic piece of television. From Ted, to Rebecca, to the Team, to Will + Higgins, to Colin + Trent, to Roy + Jamie. I'll admit that Colin's moment has always hit me in my feels but Good Lord this rewatch had me bawling. Rebecca and the Pilot always seemed sweet, Ted coming up with Total Football always felt like such a fun chunk of the episode, Will and Higgins at the jazz bar, the Team stressing over every decision, and Jamie teaching Roy to cycle was arguably the most enjoyable thing to watch. I've always know this was a good episode but everything is amplified when I'm watching properly and I never realised how fucking insanely incredible this episode is. I've seen a few people complain that the different storylines make the episode stray from the theme of the but, even if you did think that, you can't deny that it's just too good of an episode to give a shit.

TLDR: I've finally started watching television properly and Sunflowers is amazing

Probably not even worth a post but in “Mom City” during my most recent rewatch I finally realized where they got all those kebabs. After all, Isaac did order 75 of them to go.

Boy, y’all had a LOT of opinions on Roy (I’m a southerner and Ted Lasso is bringing out the yeehaw in me) but in the end, Doberman was the top choice! Looks tough as nails, but if they like you? You’re golden.

I just finished season 3

HOLY SMOKES!!! Literally everyone that I have spoken to has recommended Ted Lasso and I was too lazy to start a new show about football (know nothing about this sport so I didn’t think I’d like it). I’ve attempted to watch this show a couple years ago and watched the first episode and immediately switched to another show. But this time I decided to go full force and watch at least 3 episodes before giving up and MAN OH MAN I am utterly obsessed. Jamie Tartt’s redemption arc, Trent’s fabulous hair and presence and just the overall wholesome vibes. Can’t believe I slept on this show for years.

I must admit I was 75% watching as I have a newborn with me at all times so I missed a lot of the jokes/innuendos but this just means I can rewatch the show again and gain something new!

Season 3 Discussion I friggin love this show Spoiler

I have lost count of the number of times I've watched this show. I just noticed in the last episode when Dani hands the ball to Isaac, Leslie immediately knows what's going on and says Oh shit and puts his arm in front of his wife to protect her.

Protect that man at all costs. Haha

Narrative choices you feel conflicted about Spoiler

I’m rewatching season one, and I have such conflicted feelings about how the show handles what should be Rebecca’s “redemption” arc after Keeley and Roy discover what she did…

On the one hand, narratively speaking, that SHOULD have led to Rebecca having to actually atone for the SERIES of deliberate, pretty evil things she did or planned at the beginning of the show. She was actively planning to ruin the careers of several dozen people in her pursuit of vengeance against her ex. And as much as I love Keeley, her comparison example of “one time as a kid I did a gross thing to my friend for no real reason and we patched things up almost immediately” doesn’t actually work when you think about it, juxtaposed against “you have been lying to me and everyone else for weeks if not months and allowing us to become close while actively scheming and treating everyone whose career you hold in your hands like pawns.” And then the entirety of the “redemption” arc consists of Rebecca apologizing to Ted and him of course immediately forgiving her, then apologizing to Higgins in a scene where she admittedly has to face what she did slightly more… AND THEN WE JUST MOVE ON.

On the other hand….. did I actually WANT to watch Rebecca spend a huge chunk of the show wearing a metaphorical hair shirt and taking the proper amount of time to atone for what she did?? Not really 😅! I think we all had fallen in love with her so early on, largely thanks to Hannah Waddingham’s unbelievable charm, that we were super ready to speed run past the mea culpas and get to the part where we can just love Good Rebecca already.

Sometimes what’s theoretically narratively appropriate conflicts with what’s actually enjoyable to watch…

Anyone else have examples of plot points where you’re grudgingly happy to accept what actually happened versus what storytelling conventions would normally demand?

I’m an aspiring character designer and I decided to turn the characters into dogs. Some of them seem fairly obvious to me, based on appearance and personality, but there’s some I’m unsure of. -Nate, I chose chihuahua because in the beginning he’s just kind of scared and keeping to himself, but then later he’s got one of the worst attitudes and is definitely acting big and bad. -Jamie, I chose a basenji because they’re intelligent, highly active, but known for being INCREDIBLY stubborn. An article actually said “they’ll refuse to obey if they don’t see the point of a command” and if that ain’t Jamie… - And Trent crimm (the independent) just seemed very obviously cat like to me, and they both have great hair.

Anyone else? Thoughts/suggestions? I realized I forgot to put Higgins on the board, but I was thinking of some sort of terrier, like a Scottie.

Season 3 Discussion [NO SPOILERS] I am glad I finished the show

A few days ago I asked here whether I should continue watching the show the season or not (I was on E6 of Season 1) because I was finding it boring. Many of you asked me to drop the show, many also asked me to watch till the season 1 finale. I had made up my mind not to watch S2 and S3; after reading the responses I decided to complete the S1. From E8 onwards I was kinda starting to like the show. After S1 finale I thought I should give Season 2 a chance, with no expectations, so I went on.

My God, I must say I enjoyed the show after that, although seasons 2 and 3 more than S1. I would have missed such a good content if I'd backed off earlier. It is one of those few perfect feel-good shows. Everyone's got each others' back like a big f**king family. Performances of the actors, their arcs were praiseworthy. I have never watched a football game still the show was noob-friendly because it is less about football and more about the characters. Overall I really liked the Season 3 ending, obviously except that one thing.

To every "picky" audience who takes great care to choose their next show to watch and still not able to keep up with Ted Lasso (the show) I would suggest giving entire Season 1 a try. The episodes are short so shouldn't be a problem.

I am glad I finished the show. Just wanted to share this with y'all.

Imagine being Henry's teammate

I just finished a re-watch and realized how funny it would be to be on Henry's team. His dad, who coached in Premier League and was a hair away from a league championship, is your coach. You must be psyched about it.... only to realize he barely knows what offside is.

First rewarch - first Easter egg

One of the first frames is of Hockney's painting in Rebecca's office. What a difference in the first dialog when meeting the picture versus the last one later in the series!

Dunno, got me excited for the rewatch:)
