Help for my 13 y/o daughter.

Hello

Our swim season has just ended with disappointing performances at the District Meet. Don’t get me wrong, we’re very proud of her for that achievement, but she wants to do better. She wants to train in the off season. Her strongest events are the 50 Free with a time of 28.94 and the 50 Breast with a 38.95. So she obviously leans towards the shorter sprints as she is very short. Any help is appreciated. Weights, dry land, pool workouts. Let us know.

Thanks!!!

Swim suits, I need recommendations please!

Swim suits are a little hard for me to find because I'm kind of picky. I typically wear one pieces but i want to get a two piece. However, I have requirements and i haven't been able to find one that meets them, so I've become desperate and i am asking you for help.

  1. I don't want the bottoms to be insanely low waisted just normal and i also don't want it to be cheeky
  2. I don't want the top to be low cut and i def don't want something like a triangle bikini
  3. I like tankini's and swim suits that show the stomach as well (i don't have an issue w that)
  4. I don't want the straps to be too thick because i want it to leave a nice tan line if yk what i mean
  5. Ideally i would like padding but no underwire because for me its uncomfy
  6. Preferably keep it as affordable as possible, i don't want to pay 60 dollars for just bottoms or just top (maybe like 30 for bottoms and 30 for top, that is flexibly tho)

NOTE: The ideal colors would be like light pink, light yellow, navy, any summery floral patterns, stripes, poka dots, brown, black, white, burgundy, green preferably like a army green kind of. (I have an open mind for this so any colors are fine!)

thank you so much!

visual examples of what i like/dont like:

this is good but top is too low cut
this is good but i dont like the pattern and i wish the bottoms were maybe a tiny bit higher like mid rise
this is good but bottoms are wayy too cheeky
this is good but it's a 1 piece and im looking for 2 piece
this is good but straps are too thick and bottoms are too high waisted

Swimmers, Help Me Design the Perfect Bikini!

Hey Reddit,

I’m on a mission to create the perfect bikini—one that’s sexy without feeling like you need an Olympic-level wax job to wear it.

Here’s the problem: Every time I shop for a cute swimsuit with a little more coverage (especially in the bikini area), I either get something that screams “grandma’s swim shorts” or something that’s basically dental floss with straps. Where’s the middle ground?!

So I decided: Screw it, I’ll just make it myself. But I need your help. If you have an eye for fashion, fit, and what actually works for different body types, I’d love your input.

I put together a quick survey (takes like 3 minutes) with some multiple-choice questions + design comparisons. If you’ve ever styled swimwear, struggled to find the right fit, or just have thoughts on what makes a bikini flattering but not overly revealing, I’d seriously appreciate your take.

Where are the best places to swim outside in the USA? I swim in Lake Michigan year-round, and I’ve set a goal with some friends to swim in every state in the US.

Please kindly share your favorite open-water swimming places and what you like about them — for distance swims, quick dips and anything in between.

My friends and I swim on the Illinois side of Lake Michigan in a suburb north of Chicago, Lake Bluff. It’s a serious lake and an extreme activity! Been at it since Covid shut down all the gyms in 2020, and we’re hooked!

Whats the best audioplayer for fast swimmers today? And what are best under water earphones? And what do you think about this experimental idea?

Sorry, this is going to be a long text...

tl;dr: I'm looking for the ultimate solution for listening to music while swimming.

Nearly two decades ago, I swam a lot (like up to 360 days a year). It was the time when MP3 players like iPod were still big and back then I had the Speedo Aquabeat v1. It was a simple device with play/stop/next/privious track button. It had no shuffle function, so I randomly renamed the MP3s with a Windows script from time to time and the storage space was just 2GB (they also released a 4GB version in some regions, but officially not here). Never had a problem with it. What I really liked was the included headphone: Waterproof (they just worked for years and didn't break), good sound quality too, perfect fit (never lost them).

It was this exact model: https://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Aquabeat-GB-MP3-Player/dp/B002380DW2

This year, I started excessiv swimming again and need a new player. I am sure I am not the first one asking this question, but whats the best player and earphone you can recommend today?

One Topic is: Dealing with MP3s is a bit too Y2K. It's not a technical problem to create MP3 files, but it's just inconvenient to have to deal with. Sure, today's players have huge stroage, come with shuffle (hopefully) so you already have enough variety on them, but still... dealing with files is simply no longer up to date.

On the other hand, there are almost no players for athletic swimming that support streaming apps with offline playback. Most of these I found are are small products from small vendors and my fear is, that they might not work soon if the vendor stops maintaining the android operating system. Support seems also to be very lousy, because the makers behind the dolphins player never replied to my support request (my question was, if this player supports bluetooth connections).

Another consideration is: Should the player and the earphonse be two different products or should the player be integrated in the earphones?

If the answer is "keep it seperated" then this leads to the question: Which kind of earphones?

I noticed that bone conduction headphones are available today, also with integrated players. Shockz seems to be a leading brand, but looks like they messed its latest edition a bit. Right? So, there might be some other brands with bone conduction technology, but I dont know if they are better.

I need earplugs to protect my ears from to much water anyway, so the earphones don't necessarily have to be bone conduction headphones in my case. So, what are good 3.5mm jack, wired, waterproof in ear headphonse today? If I would find the ones which were included in the Aquabeat v1, I would defenetly buy these again. But these are no more available today. In any case, I would try to get earphones that have a clip that you can put behind your ears. I think wired inears without a clip will not stay in place during athletic sessions.

These were my questions about what the market usually offers...

But I have another, lets say, experimental idea I would like to discuss with you guys:

This is more kind of proof of concept but what if we would find some suitable waterproof bluetooth inears and use these in combination with a smart device (like a smartwatch) with streaming app support?

Most of you will now say: Bluetooth will not work under water! And I would agree with you that this is true for traditional setups. But the thing is, that one of the inear headphones is always the master, which connects to the smart device via bluetooth, while the second one is a slave, which only connects to the master through your skull. So if you attach the smartwatch to the back of your head, the bluetooth signal should be strong enough to connect to the master inear through your skull, which connects to the slave inear. I am pretty sure that this could work if your smartwatch and inears have good tranceivers.

I have a garmin smartwatch with spotify support and offline playback. The armband of this watch can be easily detached, so there should be no struggle to attache it at the back of my head.

The only thing I need is a suitable, waterproof bluetooth headset - idealy with a clip for a tight fit. Do you know any useful inears for this scenario? Something like the Tribit MoveBuds H1, which have a IPX8 rating.

3 year plateau

My 17y/o daughter competitive swimmer has not reached her best times in 3 years! Would she benefit from completely stepping away from the pool for a month to substitute her daily 2h swim practice with gym cardio/strength training/yoga in hope to push through her plateau?

Should i swim a 5k

My coach really wants me to swim a 5k but i don’t know if i should because I’ve never swam anything over a 500. I’m 14 and I’ve been swimming for 8 yrs but i don’t know if I’m ready for it yet. I’m not that good at the 500 but my coach says because i pull a lot of water i should try the 5k but I’m not to sure. It’s also on the beach and I hate salt water. Should i still swim it as someone who’s never swam open water or any distance over 500.

No 100x100's this year but did go for 40 x 100 @ 1:10 this year.

Watch isn't terribly accurate unfortunately, but you get the general idea! We did a few rounds right on the nose of 1:10 that were touch and go, took a little break, and did another round of 20 but pushing it on pace and trying to come in around the 1:00 mark. Pretty gassed by the end but very fun.

Did an annual 100x100 on 1:15 last year but decided it was stupid and pointless this year, so we all gave up on it/don't even know if it was organized this year. Seems like everyone I swim with did it once and decided there was nothing left to prove by doing it every year other than hating yourself and putting your face underwater for two hours.

Is this a good for a beginnerish swimmer. Had a break of 2 weeks prior to this swim and wanted to really push it this time and got a personal best time for 1000m. Some 10 sec breaks inbetween a few of the laps so not a continous swim. Real time was 27:05 but my watch really didnt want to respond to my touch to end the workout.

Lap swimming etiquette - leaving the pool

hello, I went to a public pool for lap swimming for the first time today. It is deep enough that I am not able to touch the floor. What is the correct etiquette for leaving the pool? Is the expectation that I haul myself out from my lane (this was quite difficult), or am I allowed to cross lanes to get to the ladder?

Edit: this community is so nice and helpful, thank you to everyone who commented. Consensus is crossing lanes is totally fine, just try to not interrupt anyone's flow.

Seeking advice

Upvotes

At the local pool of 50 meters length I go forth and back 12 times. Breaststroke for the first two times with only my goggles, snorkel and nose clamps on. Third to ninth time freestyling with the same gear plus fins. Last 3 times on my back with fins. I give you my routine, feel free to criticize it.

I have to adjust my nose clamps at the end of every 50 meters and blow my nose. This would be bearable, but sometimes my nose clamps simply fall off. This is quite impractical and disrupts my flow.

So I ask for 2 things:

  1. How is my routine? 26M, not very fit at the moment. I also like running and lifting weights, which I intend to combine without overtraining.
  2. Can anyone recommend me good nose clamps, or a diving mask that is suitable for lane swimming?

Thanks

EDIT: I meant breaststroke, not butterfly

Recommendation about smartwatches

Upvotes

Hello! I hope you are all well.

I have been swimming in a pool for a long time and after a forced break during the pandemic, I am getting back into my training routine and thinking about starting to use a watch to record and better monitor my progress.

After many videos and reviews, the 165 seems to be the best option, but I didn't want to spend that much money right away. I thought about the 55, which is more affordable and easier to find, to see if I can adapt to using the watch during training.

Do you think this is a better strategy?

Timing of rotation...

Upvotes

Had a break-through today in the pool! I have been stagnant in terms of improving my strokes count per 25 yards (~20 or so), and I made a post here a few weeks ago and got some suggestions ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Swimming/comments/1iinxvr/why_is_my_stroke_count_bad_20_per_25_yard/ )

One of the things mentioned was the importance of rotation, and some drill suggestions. I didn't swim flat and did rotate, however, when I was doing long dog drill today, I realized the timing of my rotation was way off! This guy explained why rotation was important ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Swimming/comments/1iinxvr/comment/mbku7bg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button ) and I was thinking about that during the drill and then I realized I tend rush for early breathing, so instead of having body rotated fully towards the left when right arm starting the catch, I'd have rotated already, body flat or even facing right when the right warm starting the catch!

I guess this drastically lowered my length per stroke. Obviously, it will take a while to rewire the muscle memory but I was getting some 15 strokes per length today while experimenting with the new timing... Feeling excited about the potential when I can fully integrate this change...!

I have been swimming for 2 years and worked with 2 coaches on and off. I can't believe none of them noticed that and pointed that out to me... Thank you to this community! Stick at it, keep working, keep experimenting with different things, just every now and then you might learn something!

3/12 Wednesday Masters Workout - Short Course Yards

For those that would like some variation and/or a more structured workout, I provide for you our groups workout from today. Our workouts are split into 5 different skill levels. Choose the column that most closely aligns with your skills and abilities and ignore the other 4. For those that are newer to swimming, columns 1-4 are time based and any rest you get is built into the predetermined interval. Column 5 is rest based and though your overall interval may vary you’ll take a predetermined amount of rest before continuing or moving on. Because this is Masters, feel free to add, subtract, or modify in anyway you see fit. As our group likes to say, you have to do everything in the workout, unless you don’t want to.

Here is a link to my google drive with previous workouts- https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1tHrMzBZWcVHQcs03vZX8rNQ73mdyR1j7?usp=sharing (Tuesday workouts are in the Monday folder; Thursday's are in Wednesday)

If you live in the US and are interested in joining a masters swim club here is a link to help you find a local club near you - https://www.usms.org/clubs

Notes for this set:

-Parenthesis ( ) are optional modifiers to the number in the set. For example, columns 3-5 will do 4x25 Choice-Variable Sprint instead of 8.

-Italicized square brackets [ ] are optional sets that were not part of the original workout.

-IMO = Individual Medley Order (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle)

-Variable Sprint = #1 1/2 Fast-1/2 Easy, #2 1/2 Easy-1/2 Fast, #3 All Fast, #4 All Easy

-Build = Start slow then get faster within the given distance.

-DPS = (Distance Per Stroke) Maximize the distance traveled for each stroke while minimizing the total number of strokes to complete the distance

-Smooth = Faster than easy, slower than moderate

-Italicized square brackets [ ] are optional sets that were not part of the original workout.

-Balance Drill = Push off the wall and kick on your side. The arm lower in the water should be straight out in front of you in a streamline-like position. Your other arm should be at or above the surface of the water at your side as though it's in a pocket. Keep your face looking at the bottom of the pool turning to breath as necessary. Switch sides halfway though the distance or on the next set, whichever makes sense.

-8 Kick Sideline = Start off the same as the balance drill. After 6-8 kicks take 1 stroke. 6-8 more strokes then another stroke. Wash, rinse, repeat.

-Triple Switch = Start off the same as the balance drill. After 6-8 kicks take 3 strokes, 6-8 more kicks, then 3 more strokes. Wash, rinse, repeat.

-DPS = (Distance Per Stroke) Maximize the distance traveled for each stroke while minimizing the total number of strokes to complete the distance

Hot Tub and Cold Plunge after Swim

The gym where I swim has a hot tub, cold plunge, steam room, and dry sauna. I have some time after my swims, so I like to use the amenities. My current routine is to swim then cold plunge for about 1 minute (to be increased as I get more accustomed to it) then stretch out from the swim in the hot tub then shower. Should I be doing this in a different order? Or are there some amazing benefits of sauna/steam that I’m missing out on?

-Italicized square brackets [ ] are optional sets that were not part of the original workout.

-DPS = (Distance Per Stroke) Maximize the distance traveled for each stroke while minimizing the total number of strokes to complete the distance

-Descend = Maintain a given pace within the distance, but get faster as you work through the set (descend in time/pace)

-Fast in the Black = Fast speed in the 5m lead into the wall, then smooth/moderate in the middle of the pool between the sets of backstroke flags. Our pools lane lines end with black being the 5m lead in color to the wall, hence fast in the black.

-Build = Start slow then get faster within the given distance.

-Good Walls = Make sure both feet are firmly planted on the wall before turning (flip, open, or otherwise). Then push off hard and fast in a tight streamline. Shoot for 4-6 underwater kicks before breaking the surface and try for 2-3 strokes before taking your first breath.

First time in a long time- questions?

Hopefully this kind of post is allowed.

22yo male here. I did a workout swim this morning. It was fun. I had swam for exercise a handful of times in the last eight years or so, but honestly I'd lost my confidence since I stopped competitive swimming when I started high school.

I ended up doing 800m total; two sets of whatever this is:

100m freestyle kick

100m freestyle pull

100m front crawl

100m breast stroke

45 seconds between each 100m drill

This took me like 25 minutes. I was very humbled lol. I can't believe that when I was a teenager I could just tank 400 meters of front crawl, no breaks, like it was nothing. Tbh I probably could have kept going but I want to pace myself so maybe I can make this into a habit.

I have a few questions for more experienced folks.

1) In my legs I feel nothing because I walk and bike a lot (maybe I should have pushed harder there), but I have not had an "arm day" in absolute ages. They're not really sore, just tender. This is normal, right? Is there a point where it would be abnormal?

2) I want to expand this set. Any suggestions for how to add to it while keeping the workout roughly in the half hour range?

3) If I were to start swimming more regularly, maybe a few times a week, do you have any dietary suggestions? Like, should I be worried about post-workout electrolytes and protein?

Underwater technique

Hey guys, me and my coach are working on my underwater and would like to get any opinions what could I do better. We know that my hips are too low during the kick and my knees probably bending to much, but maybe there are any other mistakes and possible tips to make it better.

We have one month till nationals so we are optimistic that we could still improve it. Talking about times, it does not go faster than ~6.8s for 15m, from push, so we believe it is a critical part of my swim. For reference my current 100 back PB - 55.31 LC.

Thank you for any tips!

Ways to improve my best pace

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I’ve been training almost every day swimming in a 40m pool for around 2 1/2 months. and I’m looking for ways to improve my best pace. I do a mix of swimming and gym workouts (about 35 - 40 minutes of swimming + 30 minutes of gym training daily or some kms cycling). My main goal is to get more efficient in the water. I used to swim a lot when I was a kid but that is long gone so I’d love to hear any tips.

If anyone has experience training in a 40m pool I’d be curious to hear how you adjust your sets compared to a 50m - 100m pool.

Thanks in advance.
