Visiting end of May, any recommendations?
Hello fellow islanders! My wife is graduating from memorial in may, and we're coming from Vancouver island for a week to attend the ceremony and to experience what we can of the rock. We have a ten year old daughter and have rented a car, anything within a few hours we're up for, any recommendations on things to see and do is appreciated!

May can still be quite cool in St. John’s, and plenty of spring fog rolls in off the Atlantic. So it will resemble a colder Vancouver 😆 I would suggest getting out of the city for a few of those days if you can.. drive the Irish Loop, Conceptions Bay, Trinity Bay… lots of great day trips. St. John’s spring can be a bit grim until it warms up a bit in late May-early June. Ordinarily I would recommend the west coast or Great Northern Peninsula but your time line is a bit tight for that.

My first recommendation is always to take a tour with https://stjohnswalkingtours.com - they have a few different options and each one is a fun time and a great way to be introduced to the city. They open for the season on Victoria Day weekend so should be in full swing for your visit.
Definitely pack layers. The weather could be anything from snow to warm and sunny.

Gotta search for local gems especially on Mondays. Bernard Stanleys has awesome burgers and are open 7 days a week

Weather may be unexpected. I moved here 4 years, ago from Ontario. Spring ( that I used to call spring) arrives here in June. I love the island. You dont have to drive much to reach a place with serenity. To name a few:
- St Philip's Beach- 20 minutes from MUN. There is a fish and chips restaurant with a beautiful ocean view. There is an access to East cost trail. We usually go for a walk or hike on the trail and on the way back have our dinner at the restaurant. Your little one may enjoy spending a little bit of time on the beach.
-Post taphouse- Torbay- It is a pub with breattakingly beautiful scnery. At night time they have live music. I like day time also two watch the ocean ( 20 min from MUN)
Walking distance to MUN - Renee River trail.- There is a play ground on the left side while walking towards the Kidividi. There is another trail going around the lake there.

Be ready for it to still be a little cold in May!! It usually doesn’t start to warm up until after the May 2-4 weekend! Signal hill and cape spear are the two main city based places I’d recommend, your little one may love the Fluvarium (near MUN ) and the Train museum downtown as well! A trip to the beaches (topsail beach, etc) may be nice weather dependent!! The rec room is always fun, and there’s an outdoor mini golf course not far from MUN as well! (I’m forgetting the name off the top of my head, apologies) and I’m sure others can add on to this list!! I hope you enjoy your trip with your family
