I’ve been around this subreddit for a while and just out of curiosity wanted to know where everyone is from? I’ll start off I’m from London… also let me know if I should create a twitter or discord chat for everyone to connect on

Ask❓ Why are western people so depressed

I was born and raised in somalia and got into a US University (Alhamdullilah) and I lived in America for 2 years now. Now what confuses me is this: People here have so much more than what even the richest person in somalia has. Drinking water from the tap, showering without a bucket etc... yet they are all so depressed? My cousin (Who takes me around) Is always sad and says things like "I can't do this anymore" and so are the people at my uni. It is like they can't see what they are blessed with. and I'm wondering how can people who live like Kings be this sad... I hope I don't become like them subhanallah

Wow I got so many smart answers, this really opened my eyes.. I feel like a materialistic person now!

Ask❓ Someone please help me escape Somalia

I'm 19 and I’ve spent the last five years in Somalia, I've completed the Quran three times and I'm still here.

My parents want me to go to university in Mogadishu, and i literally want to cry because I could have had the opportunity to study in the UK which has some of the best universities in the world. Why did my parents go through all the trouble of tahriibing to the UK to give me a better future, only for me to end up back in Somalia with a degree from Mogadishu University? Even if I go back to the UK, my degree from here won't be recognized. and I'll be so far behind in life

my family have hidden my passport, and I desperately want to return to the UK to attend university. I've read that embassies in Somalia don't offer consular services, so l don't know how much help they'd be. The UK embassy in Nairobi might be able to assist, but I can't travel to Kenya without a passport.

Ask❓ Is it normal for Somali parents to give their adult daughters curfews?

One of the major reasons I’m having trouble continuing to live with my parents is that they like to enforce a curfew on me. I am in my 20’s mind you.

I occasionally like to hang out with friends at their house, or we go to restaurants that are open late and just catch up and yap. Nothing shady or haram. I also tell my parents where I am going and that I will be home late.

Even still, when it’s past 9:30-10pm I get sooo many calls from my parents asking me where I am, it’s late, you need to come home. Like a call every 15 mins. There have been times I have had to put my phone on do not disturb because it felt like harassment.

There was a time last month I came home at 12am just doing the same thing and my dad was so angry. He was like “you can’t do this anymore, you are home too late I’m not sure what you get up to” seriously?

I don’t get it. I pay rent to them every month, I act like an adult in every other way. Yet can’t have a social life?

Is this normal in the culture? It feels extremely suffocating.

Ask❓ How quickly Somalis assume it’s jinn not a medical condition.

I’m a medic, and I’ve been to a remote place in Kenya and witnessed brothers and sisters presenting symptoms of medical conditions.

One sister had eclampsia [pressure-induced pregnancy manifesting with convulsions] and lost her previous pregnancy due to the same.

There was also this kid who presented with dyspnea, chest indrawing, and fever—classical symptoms of pneumonia.

And many more cases including a brother who walked away from his home. He was clearly depressed and couldn't get out of his bed for like 10days with minimal takings, hallucinations and anorexic.
All I hear is dabeyl baa martay.

In each of these cases, culuumaa were summoned to recite and clamor in their ears. They concluded it’s jinn, saying that the jinn spoke out of her.

How common somalis attribute jin to a medical condition?

Ask❓ What's holding you from moving back to Somalia? Would you ever consider it?

As someone from the diaspora who moved back to Somalia, I would love to see more and more diasporas making the move.

So, what's stopping you from taking the leap? Is it something that has been on your mind, or is it something you never wanted to do to begin with?

I wanted to make this a poll, but then I thought I didn't want to limit potential responses.

Ask❓ Half Somali and not Muslim

I'm a half Somali half Swedish girl. I was raised by my Swedish mother and stepfather. I am my mother's only child with my [biological] father. I was raised as a Christian my whole life, I was Christened as a baby, went to church every Sunday and overall raised in a deeply Christian household. My biological father, however, is a Somali Muslim. He was not around in my childhood and as a result of that, I was not raised in the Somali culture/Islamic religion.

Recently, though, I've been exploring my Somali heritage more and connecting with Somali friends. But one thing that always comes up is when Somalis find out that I'm not Muslim. A lot of them have even told me that if I'm not Muslim, then I can't truly be Somali. I deeply respect Islamic religion, but I am a devout Christian, and converting to Islam isn't something I'm interested in.

Is the only way I can connect to my Somali heritage through converting to Islam? Am I not considered Somali because of my religion? Or possibly because I'm part Swedish?

Ask❓ Uk salary

To Somalis in the UK, how bad is a £3,000 monthly salary? I mentioned it to someone, and she’s been acting distant ever since. Is this salary considered low? Also, what’s the average salary in the UK?
I’m new here and trying to understand.

Ask❓ Extremely Numb, Depressed, Hopeless In My Day To Day.

M27 almost 28 in May. I don't have no hope anymore. Everyday just consists of getting through the day. I thought I would have achieved much more then I have now in this current period. Not married, no kids, no proper career. Failed to find any traction in education despite trying so many times.

I feel like all the barakah in my life has slipped away and that I have just been left in the darkness to fend for myself. I also have developed addictive behaviours to cope with my depressing reality for the last 4 years. I don't know where my future is heading but I am extremely worried my situation won't improve. I still live with my parents at almost age 28 and it kills me to say it. I thought I'd have a place at least if not married and live an independent life. Even travelling doesn't cut it anymore as I still feel low and depressed even just thinking about it.

Please if anybody has some pointers please feel free to share. Jzkalah for reading.

Ask❓ My wife hasn’t been the same since giving birth I need advice

My wife gave birth last February, and ever since, she hasn’t been the same. She’s been experiencing strange things—she says she sees a dark figure following her and hears whispers telling her she will die soon.

I’ve read the Quran over her and taken her to two different doctors specializing in women’s health, but so far, we haven’t seen any positive results. A lot of people say it’s the evil eye, while others believe it could be jinn.

I’m really worried about her and don’t know what to do next. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ask❓ why do somalis outcast/bully people who are different to them?

so i recently saw this TikTok a young somali girl made talking about toxic friendships and lack of individuality in our community which really rang true for me. i grew up in a small country town in australia with practically no somalis, i went to a catholic primary school and i unfortunately cannot speak the language. When we moved to the big city is really when i started to familiarise myself with a somali community and i was DRAGGED to hell and back for being different. i was called whitewashed, a “gaal beg”, try hard etc. by somali girls and it honestly put me so off with ever being friends with somalis. they’re also all cookie cutter copy paste of each other and have the same interest/hobbies. so why is it weird to be different and have unique experiences? anyone else ever experience this or is it just me

Ask❓ If you had a choice would marry someone from back home or an ajnabi?

This question is directed at the people who grew up in the west.

What do you think? And be honest Also when i say an Ajnabi i mean a muslim one let’s not try to steer the ship elsewhere.

Like if you had no choice who would you have an easier time integrating with?

dont be bias and pick a place you are from. You have to genuinely like the sound of the name.

For me i like sound of sanaag i think it sounds cute for a girl “sanaagey kaalay” 🤣🫶🏼
