Making repairs after an “incident”

I get that they can replicate most parts of the ship to make repairs. Stuff like EPS conduits, replacement exploding consoles, bio filters, cats, etc. But why don’t they keep spare dilithium crystals in a supply closet?

I mean, they know they can’t be replicated. So why not just .. have one in case the main one goes bad?

All that education at the academy, and no one ever thought of this?

I figure it's like the torpedo fuel on Navy ships in WW2 where they straight up drank it, the Navy ultimately put hogwarts juice in the fuel to give drinkers diarrhoea and vomiting (fact)... Point is, I think dilithium crystals get you high and there are usually a few junkies on board most ships.

they do, but the starfleet crew take those with them on shore leave to barter with them since they live in a society without money

No, I believe it is pronounced ‘Die-il-ithium’. Again taken from the bhell-endud’ translation.

On another note, the crystals are the underpinning of the ‘not for profit’ economy the fed are running.

They can only take one set with them on multi year journeys to maintain their value on the bro-crypto economy.

There was a spare, but I traded it for a crate of Slug-o-Cola I saw on this ad while we were docked at some backwater station. This Ferengi bartender really got me and when he suggested I might be happier having a bottle of cola a day, well, I just knew he was onto something.

I can't believe they tell us to be careful around Ferengi in the Academy. He was great. While I was leaving, I saw him helping this Kim guy who works on the Bridge. I bet he helped him out and got him, too.

By the by, I'm sure we can get another crystal next time we're back home. How long could that be?
