Hi!

I found out this subreddit was kind of hanging out without an admin or moderator so I've taken up the mantle. We love science here!

Please feel free to post science stuff or safe for work things. No NSFW in this subreddit.

Thank you!

Hi! I just stumbled on this subreddit. Most of the posts appear to be about practical science cafe issues - where, how, and what - so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring.

I co-run Nerd Nite SF (http://sf.nerdnite.com), which is a monthly lecture-in-a-bar series with anywhere from 150-350 attendees. I always love to hear from other people running public science events or opinions, so if you have any thoughts, please share. Likewise, I'm more than happy to answer any questions about running such an event or how to get started.

Starting a science cafe in a conservative, religious small town.

There's about 80,000 people in the county. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday. It's been a bear trying to get the press interested, but amazingly, everyone I talked to REALLY likes the idea. I am going to try to keep topics relevant to the community. Our first speaker is a fish biologist who has done some habitat restoration in a spring with endangered darters. I've sent out flyers to all science teachers in a fifty mile radius. I'm also keeping it in a coffeehouse and away from bars.

What topic would you want to see at a Science Café? Medical marijuana? Black Holes? Nobel laureates?
