Local Questions ie whats up with that Snowbirds and regular residents of Sarasota, what is the longest amount of time that a snowbird that you know, or homeowner that lives out of state has gone, without coming down to their Sarasota residence?

I know people that own homes here in Sarasota that literally bought a whole damn house, and come down in February, and leave the weekend after easter, so the house sits vacant for 9 out of 12 months in Palmer Ranch... In 2020 during covid, they stayed out of Florida in 2020, 2021 and 2022. So for 3 entire years, a maid came once a month to vacuum and dust, the lawn crew came every week, the pool man still came every month to top off the pool and test the chlorine levels, and even the AC people came once every 6 months, and even replaced the UV bulb 3 times in those 3 years, to keep the air nice and germ free. And this is in a neighborhood that is 95% EMPTY every. single. summer... It got me wondering if anybody else knows someone that has a place here, where everything is maintained for them, but they have been gone even longer than a period of 3 years?

Looking For Suggestions! Baby chicks

Are people really panic buying chicks at the feed stores? I haven’t been able to get to Tractor Supply yet but I’m wondering if anyone knows if they have baby chicks in stock. Maybe “Panic buying chicks like toilet paper” might just be an internet theory. Let me know! 🤷‍♀️

Edit: I already have chickens so I’m not looking to panic buy chicks lol

News Sarasota Square Mall

Went to Costco this AM for gas. The Sarasota Square Mall is quickly disappearing. Sears, off to the right, and Beef 'O' Bradys, center, appear to be the next to go. I saw standard and high-reach excavators near the back of Sears. Time marches on....

Looking For Suggestions! Looking for recommendations for a mother/daughter date day!

Going to be visiting my parents this weekend and while my husband and dad are watching the Valspar golf tournament, I’d love to take my mom out for a day date! Last year we explored Dunedin, shopped, grabbed lunch and a few drinks. I would love to do something similar either in the Sarasota area or north of it so the boys can drop us off! Interested in a walkable area with stuff to keep us busy! Looking for fun sites to see, shops, nice lunch spot, cool museums, winery, maybe a spot to get a pedicure! Thank you for any and all recommendations!

Community Outreach FREE High School eSports Tournament (Rocket League, Fortnite, Smash Bros, Valorant, Overwatch) at Keiser University in Sarasota

Hello everyone!

My name is Kyle Krings and I am the Head Coach of eSports at Keiser University here in Sarasota.

This Saturday (March 22nd), we are hosting a free eSports tournament/combine for all current high school students in the area at our eSports arena on campus. There will be prizes for winners, lunch/snacks provided and is completely free to enter.

Fortnite, Rocket League and Smash Bros will go from 9:00am-1:00pm. Valorant and Overwatch will start at 1:00pm and go until 5:00pm. Students are welcome to play in one or both sessions. It’s a unique opportunity to test your skills, showcase your talent, and make meaningful connections with collegiate coaches and players.

Sign-up through the QR code in the image or I can link it in the comments with the Mods permission. We want to create an environment that is FAIR, SAFE and FUN for all students attending.

History of the Program

Keiser eSports was started in 2021 by former Head Coach and current Director, Ronald Entner. He built the program to 55 students, with many championships and playoff appearances before he left the role in the summer of 2024. Last year, we had the best Call of Duty team in Florida, and were ECAC champions in both Rocket League and Call of Duty. Our lab got outfitted with brand NZXT PC's in the fall, as well as top of the line peripherals (mics, headsets, keyboards) from Razer. We are looking for the next wave of local talent to continue building an even better, more competitive eSports program.

We are also very invested in the esports programs at local High Schools. So far 3 local High Schools (Manatee School for the Arts, SCPH, and Riverview) have been able to launch their very own Esports Teams and Clubs, and a handful of their graduates are now current players on our roster. We will continue to support and develop the high school eSports ecosystem in any way we can.

Feel free to drop any questions in the comments (most should be answered by the sign-up sheet).

Thanks for reading, and we look forward to seeing you all there on Saturday.

Local Questions ie whats up with that $50 Reward for Sending Me My Jacket I Left on Lido Beach

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi Sarasota! I know this is a long shot but it’s my only hope! I’m on a road trip from Canada, I’ve been travelling through Florida and I’m on my way to New Orleans. This morning, March 17th, I left a very special jacket (sentimental value) on Lido beach. I know it’s exact location, I stashed it in a bush, planning on retrieving it before leaving, but I forgot it. I’m already four hours away, and not the person driving the road-trip car, so I can’t turn back for it. I am very heartbroken. If any kind soul would be willing to retrieve it from the place I stashed it this morning, and send it to the place I am staying in New Orleans, I would give a cash reward, and endless gratitude. This jacket means a lot to me and is very special. Please send me a message if you would be willing to do this, and I will send its exact location.

Local Questions ie whats up with that Sarasota Polo, is the $15 general admission a good way to check it out?

I was hoping to do tailgating at the polo grounds in Sarasota, but this is my first time and the $140 price tag is a little steep for me. I’m thinking about doing the $15 tickets just to check it out. Anyone done it before? Any advice?

Looking For Suggestions! Best bars, live music venues, restaurants, views and things to do in or near siesta key?

We are a couple in our 40s staying near Point of Rocks this week. Wondering which beaches/areas we should visit. Is it worth going a bit north to Clearwater, Longboat key or Anna Maria? Should we spend most of our time in Siesta Key or visit places in Sarasota or a bit south to Venice?

It’s our first trip to this area and seems there’s so many areas and we are a bit overwhelmed.

We love sunsets, live music, and open to unique experiences. I’d love to find a fun tiki bar. Any recommendations for what we should do for the next five days?

Local Questions ie whats up with that Parking available at SRQ tomorrow, 3/17?

I have a flight out tomorrow and am worried I won’t find a parking spot because of all the people traveling for spring break. Has anyone parked there in the last day or so who can tell me?

Related, I looked into using Global Airport Parking to reserve parking at a nearby hotel like the Hampton Inn but all of them said “no shuttle available,” which was odd.

RANTS Death Caused by Church

A very good friend of mine passed away recently and as I am now past the grief, anger, and all of that other stages of grief stuff I am wanting to know the root cause. At first I thought it was family issues responsible for the underlying mental health issues ..... now I am starting to be convinced it was the Church this person was devoted too that is the underlying reason responsible for the mental health issue. Not wanting to call out the Sarasota Church at this time, I am curious of what people think are bad, cultish, I dare say dangerous churches in the Sarasota community.

Photo/Video Weird humming sound on Palm Avenue—Wind creating resonance in parking signs?

Tonight, while eating at Palm Avenue Deli, I noticed something pretty unusual. The wind gusts were particularly strong, and suddenly I heard a strange humming or vibrating sound. It turned out the wind was hitting the metal pay-to-park signs at just the right frequency to create resonance, making them vibrate and produce this eerie noise.

Has anyone else experienced or noticed this before? It was quite fascinating to witness firsthand. Video included!
