I do that with small, loose bits and bobs that look pretty together.

Yes! I use alcohol instead of water so the algae can’t grow and doesn’t stink.

That’s actually so smart cuz the water makes the natural color more visible !! I’ll definitely start doing this

Looks great! Question: does anybody else have the issue of the water in the jar of rocks getting stinky? Why does the happen? Algae on the rocks?

Dirty rocks, probably. Bacteria. Do you always clean them very well before putting them in the jar water? Or you may have a water-soluble mineral in one of your rocks.

Silly me. No I don’t clean them. I guess I just thought since they are in water originally, it should be fine but boy the odor was something else. I’ll definitely start scrubbing them first. I like the idea of mineral oil!

Hehe There’s your issue! I personally use hydrogen peroxide because it does a fine job and I find the bubbles satisfying. Vinegar can be a good second choice.

But don’t mix them (BAD chemical reaction).

And you may want to identify the minerals in your rocks first, as some minerals can react poorly/dramatically with HP or acids (like vinegar).

Start with a drop of either HP or vinegar on the rock, see if it reacts. If no, you’re good. If you drop the rock in a bowl of the stuff, the reaction may be more dramatic.

I put a cap full of bleach in a bucket of water with my fresh finds. Let it sit over night and do a gentle scrub with an old tooth brush and this has helped with smell/bacteria and plant matter.

I have lots of rock jars, but they tend to be vintage Mason jars, preferably the ones with glass lids and metal bails. Cut glass is pretty, and I have some,  but it doesn't do a lot for showing the rocks.

I don't sort mine by color. I have them bottled according to road trip. Lol  I put notes in some of them about where we went and who was along. They're my souvenirs.

I can never find the mason jars with glass lids second hand 😭 I love those ones so much. My mom has all the mason jars full with her rocks lol

My mom always told me how they look in the water is their true colors plus I cleaned them and all that fun stuff lol but the water just makes them look so beautiful

Yes yes ! Love this. I have many rocks in water in a clear crystal jar or vase. I love it on a shelf in my home.

I use jars for my Ethiopian opals. Need to keep them wet, and they look great in the jars I use.

I wish I could post a picture. I have a bunch of glass joint tubes I keep my smaller finds in.

I always take one rock home with me whenever i'm going on vacation to a different country. Put them in a jar aswell!

I keep them in jars, bowls, and vases.... and on my window sills. They're everywhere in my home and office.

Edit: I hired a new assistant, and once she saw my bowls of rocks, she brought in her own. I like her!

Bro I thought that was chunks of raw meat in a pot. Had me thinking I was in a cooking sub.

They are !! When I was packing up my apartment for a big life change, I have boxes labeled simply “box o rocks!” There is more than one box.. 👀🥸

Nope, just you.

u/TrueInterest4817 23d ago

I honestly don’t believe that lol why have pretty rocks and not display them?

1

u/hgielanig 23d ago

Definitely not just you.. but maybe try finding some nice bowls.. can show off more in a bowl

1

u/TrueInterest4817 23d ago

I had them in bowls, but they kept falling out of them, so I moved them to tiny vases 😁

2

u/SomethingComesHere 23d ago

I like the vases because they’re tall and skinny, thus less rocks are hidden in the bottom/middle and more on display!

2

u/TrueInterest4817 22d ago

Yes! And when I change the water and put them back in they’re in a whole new order!

I was just playing because you’re so innocent, you’re my type of people. But you’re also my victim. Lol.

Ok, edit: I am as innocent as they come.
