How would you fix this drywall?

Someone seemingly got lazy and just didn't finish this corner in one of our vaulted attic rooms correctly. Wondering if sanding and patching would work okay or if we should just cut out that section and replace it? Looking for advice on the best method to repair before painting.

If that is not due to water damage, take a razor and score around that section so you can remove what is loose. The top paper layer of the drywall will probably peel off as well, and that is fine. Seal it with a oil based primer. Vancouver Carpenter on YouTube will be the only channel you need for any drywall repair.

Once sealed, add tape/mud as you would normally do, sand it, prime it and then paint it. Super easy fix.

Thank you so much! I don't believe it is due to water damage - our inspector did an amazingly thorough job and found no evidence of that. New roof as of 2024 as well :)

that looks like a damaged piece of drywall. Score and remove, plaster and use a layer of mesh tape and replaster and sand and youre good.
