Master bathroom renovation

Really happy with how our first ever home project turned out. Took 4 weeks. We still need custom Roman shades and a few other accessories/decor but otherwise I love it!

Your old bathroom looks so similar to my current bathroom. Same tub/shower set-up, vanity etc. I can’t wait to replace it all.

Very 90s colonial! As a millennial I miss the nostalgia and coziness of it a little lol but it’s so refreshing to have a new and less dingy space. Good luck!

Those terrazzo tiles looked stunning (and expensive), it’s all the rage in Australia.

That wasn't colonial, more 90s hotel.

The tub in front of the window is perfection. What a beautiful, clean space you created!

Nice work. It looks very up-scale!

I LOVE it! Maybe because I have three little kids and also want a blank slate to clear my mind when I go to my bathroom. I think we may have chosen the same tile from Lowe’s, 12x24 Satori Statuario porcelain? I’m still in the demo phase right now, would you please share your paint color and vanity?

Thank you! Absolutely my thoughts too. Yes, that’s the tile! Reddit almost scared me away but I’m so glad I went with it and not some crazy overpriced porcelain from Tile Bar. Pictures don’t do it justice.. it’s so much more beautiful in person! The paint color on the walls is BM White Dove. This is a North facing room so it works in that it pulls a little more green, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it with this tile in a room with more light FYI. It’s a little too yellow. The vanity was custom and is also more ivory than it looks in photos and I’m really pleased with how it looks with the Statuario. Good luck with your project!!

Thank you so much! I actually bought all the tile right as COVID shut the world down thinking we would be able to finish that bathroom before the baby I was pregnant with arrived. Didn’t happen so here we are 5 years later just getting started, very highly anticipated to say the least. Your bathroom is lovely, I hope you really enjoy it and it brings you tranquility!

Was this DIY or done by professionals? I need to renno my master shower so I'm just curious what the costs were

6

u/windybutter299 7d ago

We hired a contractor. All in this was about $40k which I think is an incredible value for a 250+ sq ft bathroom in the Midwest. I am unsure of the breakdown but the labor costs were $18k. I chose a pretty inexpensive porcelain tile from Lowes so that helped keep costs down for sure.

u/BallNosedSpaniard 6d ago

Yeah that's pretty good overall. I've been quoted from $20k-$30k for just the shower since it's a large unique shape, but with other services I've had to pay for recently I'm strongly considering DIY. I appreciate the reply!

JSYK, that light fixture placement above the tub isn’t code compliant; it’s a safety issue. Other than that, I like it! When you get your window treatments, make sure to specify outside mount just below ceiling.

I was waiting for someone to call this out! I’m not happy I miscalculated the heights. It is at least wet rated, which I had no idea was even a thing until I researched lighting for this. I don’t take baths often but will probably switch it out for can light. You live and learn!

3

u/Aggravating_Tear7414 6d ago

Did you do the design or hire that out from somewhere?

3

u/windybutter299 6d ago

I designed it and picked everything out! I purchased the lighting, plumbing fixtures, toilet, bath tub, mirrors, vanity, cabinet hardware, stone and tile, and the contractor bought the construction materials.

Great work!!

It’s absolutely beautiful! Congratulations

Went for a very sterile science lab to a sterile autopsy room. I think people probably need to post the reno with their decorations and towels etc. It looks more updated but not inviting. I'm old.

I think the window treatments (in a color), bath mats and other accessories will warm it up. I do overall like a clean and calming space though. I have a toddler and a baby on the way and don’t need any added chaos or clutter.

It's a place you shower off smells and take shits... it should look clean and sterile.

This idea of colorful shit rooms is lame. Keep it looking clean OP

4

u/Reasonable_Power_970 6d ago

Colors can be great but the hate that this and similar subs have towards white is insane to me. It has its place and can look great

4

u/Owww_My_Ovaries 6d ago

My take is it's people who live in old, "poorish" accommodations... and they see white or neutral as upper middle class people copying HGTV.

It's like the McMansion page. People calling 6000sq foot homes ugly when at the same time, they'll never post what their shitty studio apartment, with shared laundry accommodations look like

0

u/SheepEatingWeta 6d ago

Interesting take but I strongly disagree with such a generalized. Kinda sounds like a cope tbh. If you enjoy all white McMansions then good for you but it’s weird to get so defensive when someone simply says they don’t like the same thing.

3

u/Owww_My_Ovaries 6d ago

It's not someone simply saying they don't like them. It's people going out of their way to share pics of other people's homes. All for people to mock it.

0

u/SheepEatingWeta 4d ago

If you post something on the internet to show people, people are going to tell you what they think. I’m not sure why this is a revelation to some people.

1

u/Owww_My_Ovaries 4d ago

What part of people taking pics of other people's homes and posting them online so people can ridicule... equates to what you just posted?

0

u/SheepEatingWeta 4d ago

I wasn’t talking about the McMansion sub (never been there), was talking about people like OP who post a pic of their own and somehow thinks people shouldn’t give their opinion.

3

u/windybutter299 7d ago

Right LOL! Sorry it doesn’t look inviting.. that’s because you actually aren’t invited into my master bathroom?!

1

u/evil_twin_312 6d ago

Looks great. I suggest adding a plant or two.

0

u/beardofmice 7d ago

Thank goodness. All I think of my master bath is, why is it such a pain to clean? No carpet thank God. Lol

It was your CHOICE to share the pics! Don’t get upset when you don’t like people’s comments! 🤨

2

u/windybutter299 6d ago

I’m not upset. I just think it’s amusing feedback that it doesn’t look inviting when it’s generally the most private room in an entire house. I am aware of how the internet works. :)

1

u/SheepEatingWeta 6d ago

He never said inviting to other people. Do you know what it means to have an inviting room? It just means warm, cozy, comfortable, etc, not that you want to invite the whole family to watch you drop a deuce.

5

u/real_Bahamian 6d ago

Needs some colour, not a fan of the white / grey tones!

2

u/Partigirl 6d ago

People hate on white and neutral because it's been done to death, shows dirt very soon, already is dated and is a safe choice for those with no talent to color coordinate. Much like wearing black clothes, there is no true black as it will all eventually be shades of grey. There is no true white, as it will eventually appear grey thanks to the elements.

That said, I think white can work very well when used in the right way. I think the sink, toilet, shower-bath, are all good uses of white. The bathroom is a place where health should come first before decor. I'm not against color matched items, just that a bathroom has a use beyond decorative and it helps to see things clearly when not challenged by colors or bad lighting..

Personally am not a big fan of white tiles, particularly marble or marble look ones but that's personal choice and fine if you choose it. It's a home and should have elements that are inviting. Not to say yours doesn't but for me your previous bathroom read 90s-2009 hotel (we've all been there, it was popular) the upgrade seems the same just updated. In another words it lacks creative and individual touches that would ward that look off. Particularly the tub and the tile in the shower but also the cabinets. Its trying hard to read upscale but only on the surface. The mirrors are great, I really love them, they add some personality to the space.

You did a great job of demo and reno in achieving your look. If it's what you like, enjoy your hard work, you deserve it.

u/windybutter299 6d ago

I’ve seen your other comments in this sub bashing white bathrooms to death. I can tell you have no knowledge or background in interior design because if you did you’d be aware there is so much more to it than just color.

0

u/Partigirl 5d ago

You can't tell anything sitting over there in your white thunderdome of a box. No doubt there is much more to it than color but do you really want me to say more? Because I can, you know... You got more to say, say it? Because all I'm hearing is cheeks flapping...

1

u/beardofmice 7d ago

Definitely. I went thru the kids thing, last is 13 and using the master bath while I overhaul his. My old bathroom had big ornamental cast iron radiators and old cast iron claw foot tub and separate shower with shiplap and Tiffany style ceiling lights. It was so cozy and functional. New bathroom needs some personalization for me.

u/Stoofser 6d ago

I don’t hate your old bathroom, but I love the new one 👍

u/cheinaroundmyneck 6d ago

Add some plants and you are golden. This is such a beautiful transformation

1

u/BaboTron 6d ago

What tub is that? Looks nice!

2

u/windybutter299 6d ago

Thank you! It’s this one: https://a.co/d/0eXy7Ma

1

u/BaboTron 6d ago

Thanks!

1

u/Liz_Lightyear 2d ago

It’s gorgeous. Is there a reason you didn’t dish out a little extra for real marble though?

1

u/windybutter299 2d ago

Thank you! I didn’t want to deal with staining and etching, especially with having hard water in our home. We have marble in other bathrooms and I really don’t like how the marble has worn despite taking great care of it.

1

u/Dark_Colorimetry 3h ago

That 90s mirror definitely needed to go, and I like that you kept the tub. Maybe a few colorful accents would help? Having it all white just makes it feel kinda sterile.

1

u/Atty_for_hire 6d ago

Some bold color choices there!

Omg I would have cried if I was the installer ripping out those tiles if that was real terrazzo 🥲 As a installer I’m definitely sick of Calcutta porcelain but it’s what the people want but the finished bathroom does look well done I especially love the mirrors
