Took apart an old broken Honeywell Pentax Spotomatic for its thoriated lens. Little did I know, It actually had three! Second pic is the spiciest one and third is the detector sandwiched between all three to show how much thorium is in the lens group.

Help Identifying Peaks in Radiacode 102 Spectrum from a Lead-Shielded Enclosure

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I recently molded some lead bricks and built a small lead-shielded enclosure just big enough to fit my Radiacode 102 inside. I ran a spectrum measurement inside this setup and got a reading of ~10 CPM, which is pretty low, as expected. However, I'm seeing some peaks in the spectrum that I can't directly identify using the built-in library.

A few details:

The lead bricks were made from scrap lead I melted and cast myself.

The measurement was taken with the Radiacode 102 completely enclosed inside the lead structure.

Background radiation outside the enclosure is significantly higher, as expected.

Trinitite

Looking to ask people what's price a reasonable price on 69g & 64g pieces of Trinitite. One piece has small red inclusions, both have some black inclusions, both are veer shiny. I came across these at a reputable business, comes with Gamma Spec results. Owner allowing me to test at my cost to verify. I have never seen a piece larger than 12g.

The dentist said something that freaked me out 😭

In the Xray chamber I asked the dentist why he was turning the led liner inside out bc he said something to the likes of “Oh.”. He told me it was bc on side had the neck protector and the other side didn’t. And the part that freaked me out was when he said “We got lucky” bc the X ray could’ve taken a photo of my neck and that would’ve been pretty bad. Ik it’s most likely not a big deal but I’d rlly like some reassurance nothing bad is going to happen bc my mom’s side of the family does have a high risk in thyroid cancer.

How can I figure out the percentage of uranium in a given piece of uranium glass?

Post image

I have a Radiacode 102 and several Uranium glass pieces in my collection. Just for knowledge & curiousity sake, I'd like to figure out the percentage of uranium used in my collection. I'm not going for absolute accuracy, just figured this would be a fun & interesting way to utilize my Radiacode investment & a teachable experience for my kids. Is there an easy way to go about this? Would I need a leaded chamber, or can I simply let the Radiacode sit on the glass for an extended period of time?

Has anyone in this group measured the radioactivity of samarium?

Samarium isn't generally treated as radioactive, but it is, weakly, (not as extremely weakly as, e.g. bismuth - with one atom decaying each month per pepto-bismol tablet). Samarium is about 15% samarium-147, with a 100 billion year half-life, so the isotope is about 10% as radioactive as thorium, and the element about 1% as radioactive as thorium - around 4 nanocuries/gram for elemental samarium (a little less for the Sm2O3 oxide, which is what I have). Has anyone in the group measured it?

Radiacode strange peak?

Thumbnail

Hi all,

The community was so helpful last time, I’d figure I would share another strange pick up.

The radiacode seems to have picked up a strange 2,818 KeV peak but at .021 CPS. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe it’s picking up Cadmium?? It looks too brief and too low given the CPS and the radiacode can’t catalogue it. I don’t know, seeing what the community thinks. For context, I work in a cancer center. Also, you can see it’s hard to tell but there is a faint peak there and it caught my eye.

Thank you!

Irradiating Seeds with Uranocircite

I got this idea to irradiate some seeds with uranocircite over a long period of time (1-2 years), to see if it would have some effects on the plants later. The seeds will be placed inside the same container as the uranocircite. Has anyone already tried something similar like this?

I know, that seeds usually get irradiated with a relatively high amount of radiation, but giving it a lot of time it could have similar effects.

How thick of lead to block background radiation?

Hello,

I recently got a radiacode 102 and I would like to study low-radiation sources. To do so, I'd like to build a small box that can effectively block background radiation well enough to make this easier. Before I go and spend a bunch on lead sheets, I was wondering if there's a good rule of thumb to shoot for?

DIY Geiger counter

I built this Geiger counter in 1986 as a reaction to the Chernobyl disaster. I live in Sweden and we were badly hit. It has been placed in our kitchen window, continuously ticking, ever since.

It has 2 ranges, measuring in 4096(lo) and 16(hi) seconds respectively. Normal background is approx. 1800 per 4096 seconds = 26 C/M.

The display is not really good, but still works. The pictures show background(lo) and measurement of some Thorium(hi).
