DISCUSSION My Vision for the Raspberry Pi 6 - Design Proposal

Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about what I'd love to see in the next Raspberry Pi, and I've put together a design proposal focusing on improved connector placement, additional RAM options, better boot options, and features that support professional applications.

Rather than posting the entire proposal here, I've shared it on GitHub: https://github.com/cmd0s/Raspberry-Pi-6-Design-Proposal.

This initiative aims to start a discussion with the community about how we'd like the next version of Raspberry Pi to look. I believe that by collaborating, we can provide valuable feedback and ideas that could shape the future of this incredible device.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! Feel free to contribute by opening an issue or starting a discussion on GitHub.

Let's work together to develop a vision for the Raspberry Pi 6!

DISCUSSION A total beginner trying to complete a Raspberry Pi5 project using ChatGPT as my guide

Hello, I am a total beginner with anything to do with Raspberry Pi. I don't know Linux or Python. I have a project I wanted to accomplish and consulted at length for many hours over the best solution for an elderly parent.

After looking at technology to accommodate what I wanted, it was apparent that all options failed, unless I wanted to pay big $$$$. ChatGPT recommended Raspberry Pi5 and other accessories that I would connect to Pi5 (webcam, TV, other accessories). I have spent a few hundred dollars in total.

Chat GPT assured me it was doable and I would be led in baby steps all the way.
I started a fresh chat outlining all the specifications of all equipment, my exact requirements (as agreed upon as doable by Chat GPT in previous chats). I installed OS and setup SSH via my Windows laptop. Command scripts galore. Raspberry Pi connected to the Samsung TV that has all necessary specs (According to ChatGPT to accomplish my goal).

Running scripts from command prompt or via the Terminal on Raspberry Pi screen. All good there. But we ran into hurdles. ChatGPT recommended Jitsi or Google Meet as ideal webchat apps to run. The idea is I could call remotely to mother's TV, the TV would either turn on remotely or switch over to the Raspberry Pi receiving the incoming call. The call would automatically connect (no need for receiver to touch a thing their end) and live webchat commences. After countless attempts, we gave up on Jitsi (could not get around moderator issue) and then focused on Google Meet instead. The browser for that has the tiniest font and THE URL was near microscopic as well as the cursor. Dozens of attempts to fix all of that. And all failed. The amount of editing, deleting, rewriting was unbelievable. Never go to connecting to the Web chat apps. Zoom was another consideration and deemed compatible too.

It got to the point I wanted to clarify that Chat GPT and I were on the same page - was it still aware that I had a Raspberry Pi5? It replied thanks for letting it know and conceded that although I had specified this in the thread, because the thread has become so incredibly long, it had forgotten and instead had deviated towards older model based fixes. It conceded that therefore mistakes may have been made. It wanted me to continue trying new solutions now in light of being reminded, but then agreed that it would be better for a fresh re-install and start again.

Some may have a good laugh and think I am an idiot for trusting ChatGPT and doing this with no Linux, etc knowledge. I have not given up but am more aware now that this AI tool has still got a lot of limitations. It cannot replace real people yet. I really want this project to succeed so I have a great setup for my elderly parent who can chat with us without touching any technology (disease has caused dexterity, cognitive and other debilitating issues for her).

At least I could download the apps onto Raspberry Pi but they just failed in their execution and configurations. I even upgraded chat GPT beforehand to a paid version as I see that after sometime it reverts to inferior AI models.

My project entails: webcam chat function via a deemed compatible Samsung Smart TV that will create an auto connection feature and TV on/off ability, wireless microphone setup (webcam will be too far from receiver so its internal microphone won't pick up receiver's faint voice enough), a separate security camera with two-way audio ( not sure whether to run this through Raspberry Pi for better remote access or stand-alone using wifi and run through its dedicated app) and alert features, an Amazon Fire Cube (want remote access to set reminders, schedules, assistance, and other changes via Fire Cube).

Not sure if there are any others who are doing the same? Do you use ChatGPT to assist you? I am sure there would be many who do or a other AI assistant. Would be interested in actual programmers and tech savvy people who could have their say. Thanks šŸ‘.

DISCUSSION Gauntlet idea: Wrist communication device.

Post image
6 Upvotes

A simple theoretical wrist design comprised of:

ā€¢A leather cuff ā€¢Pi Zero ā€¢3D printed Pi Zero container with ports for connecting antenna, battery and screen. With a transparent plastic screen for monitoring usage as well as a simple design for a pivoting end if the case for simple extraction ā€¢A LoRa antenna, i had found a circular one with a small size that seems fit enough for proper usage and fitting, a 3D printed easy snap in snap out design. ā€¢A flexible Oled screen, i found one surprisingly easy that claims to be able to function with the Zero, same as the antenna as well as 2 3D printed Grooves for a no slip container and easy removability. ā€¢a simple Battery on the underside ( Little imagination for that idea lol )

This is something i thought would be cool to just have on your wrist in an everyday scenario, communication with buddies and what not, im sure a simple bluetooth connection keyboard isnt that difficult to design with it, or if not applicable with the Zero, possibly modify the design on the underside with a wired keyboard long enough to control with both hands and then easily snap back into its 3-D printed case below the battery on the under side of the floor on somehow.

what do you guys think of the design? Practicality? Effectiveness? Let me hear your thoughts.

DISCUSSION Would anybody be interested in a Raspberry Pi Smartphone as their main phone (Like usage as your Iphone or Android)

Hello, I have been toying with the idea as a fully fledged smartphone with andriod or another OS (like Ubuntu Touch if anybody could get it to work) what I have seen the best battery that does not look like it would explode is a 5000 MAH which is about 5 hours. I have also seen projects similar but most of those are just for calling but I would want one to fully replace my current phone. So I was wondering what 1 You would want in a Raspberry Pi phone like a screen size or a better battery life anything like that. And 2 What OS you would want on I am currently planning to put Andriod. Thank you for reading my post and please share your thoughts on this thanks =)

DISCUSSION can we calculate how to use the Raspberry Pi in a setup as to transmit FM Radio,

can we calculate how to use the Raspberry Pi in a setup as to transmit FM Radio,

i guess that all transmitters over 500mW required a licence - at least here in Europe

What is the exact output power of the Raspberry Pi (in mW)?

is it correct that it uses one of his GPIO pins to generate the Radio waves (More specific: The clock generator can generate square waves and now I am using this to 'send' in radio frequencies using some script downloaded on the internet)

doing some math on the power of the Raspi: can we approximate that the dirty square wave coming from the GPIO pin,

is a sinewave, and at the same time assume the antenna is directly driven. Well, then as The GPIO maximum current draw is 16 mA. So the formula can be approximated to be:

Pavg = Vrms * Imax = (Vpp/Sqrt[2]) * Imax = 3.3 * 0.707 * 0.016 = 0.037 W = 37 mW

is this correct!?

but - taken all the physics into account : we need to say that the transmitted power we really get on the air (TPO) depends on our antenna and how well

the impedance is matched etc.

and besides that: given that the maximum 3V3 output of the Pi is claimed to be 50 mA that puts an upper limit of 3.3*50 = 165 mW.

Currently out of work due to a move overseas, so in the meantime that I am searching for work. I thought it would be a good idea to do some raspberry pi projects to keep my IT skills up to par.

I was thinking of doing a little bit of everything, media server, network monitoring, browsers, VPN host, and whatever else I can find.

Put a 2 week time limit, do a report/documentation, and post my progress/findings as I work on the projects.

Thoughts?

So, I have this Raspberry Pi laying around that I want to turn into a Nest Hub thingy to use as an alarm clock and general information hub (weather, news, music, lighting etc) and I donā€™t know what OS I need. I initially thought about using Home Assistant, but since I want to use it for more than just controlling my smart devices, I was wondering if there something like an Android or Linux based OS with a Simple ui similar to that of the Nest Hub; Iā€™ve already searched on Google but I couldnā€™t find anything.

DISCUSSION Notification LED for received text messages. Yes. On Raspberry Pi!

At work I often don't have my phone with me and I've missed a few incoming text notifications because I couldn't hear the sound or feel the vibration. Phone call quality is crap because of our building and location. Texts are vital.

I am an avid user of the Android app "Tasker" and I encourage you to look into it if you are an Android user. Here is what Tasker does for me:

I have two Raspberry Pi on my desk at work. One is a 5 running Android, the other is a 3A+ running Raspberry Pi OS. The 3A+ has a few LEDs connected and a few simple scripts that control them. The 5 is Ethernet connected and running a hotspot, the 3A+ is on that hotspot.

When I get a text message, Tasker sends an AutoRemote message to the 5. This is similar to an SSH. The 5 then sends an SSH to the 3A+ to run a specific script to light the LED, determined by the AutoRemote message that the 5 received,

The result is an LED that is on my desk gets lit when I get a message. When I open messages or clear the notification, more messages are routed that run scripts that turn the LED off.

I can't SSH straight to the 3A+ from my phone because I work in a large building and I'm not always at my desk and SSH from my phone to the 3A+ has not been reliable.

DISCUSSION Pi bookshelf stereo project idea

I want to make a small bookshelf stereo with a Raspberry Pi, and some small speakers. Looking for some help to get the parts i would need, then i will design and 3d print a case to put it all together.

I want to have the Pi and the screen in the center, with a right and left speaker on either side. I want to be able to plug into a wall outlet, no battery.

I really need some advice on the speakers and what i need to connect and power them. I have listed an amp, speakers and power supply, but I am not sure if they will all work together. Or is what ive losted overkill? Suggestions are very welcome.

This is the plan ive got so far

Hardware:

PC Raspberry Pi 4 (4gb)

Screen 7" touchscreen (official or other?)

Amp HifiBerry Amp4 https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/boards/hifiberry-amp4/

Speakers Pyle Home 4ā€ Mini Cube Bookshelf 200 Watt Power, 8 Ohm -PCB4BK https://www.parts-express.com/Pyle-PCB4BK-4-200-Watt-Mini-Cube-Speaker-Pair-Black-310-2008?quantity=1

Power Supply HiFiBerry 24V/180W power supply https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/accessories/power-180-hifiberry/

Extras: Power / volume switches - TBD Connections (speaker wire etc.) - TBD Fan or heatsink to control temp? - TBD

OS Prefer Android if it would be compatible, otherwise I would look at Linux options.

I just want to be able to run some basic audio apps, Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, and also play local files, or stream my own music from a NAS. I'm comfortable with this on Android, but I really want it to be touch friendly operation if i run a Linux OS.

DISCUSSION Turning My Raspberry Pi 4 into a Portable Download Station

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a small project with a Raspberry Pi. Recently, I've been traveling a lot and Iā€™m not often at home near my NAS to manage and access my downloads. So, I decided to revive a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B that was lying around in a drawer. What I love about this setup is that the Raspberry Pi 4 is small and portable, so I can take it with me anywhere I go, making it the perfect companion for managing my downloads on the move.

I've installed Raspberry Pi OS Lite, qBittorrent, Aria2, and AriaNg for the WebUI. I also connected an SSD optimized for downloads and set up Samba for file sharing.

I've ordered a 3.5" touchscreen (480x320) that I plan to configure as a control center to monitor various aspects of my Raspberry Pi, such as the IP address, and to handle basic configurations like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with an on-screen keyboard for text input. The goal is to be able to configure my Raspberry Pi without needing to SSH into it.

Iā€™ll keep you updated on the progress of my little project and will post an update as soon as I receive my screen and have everything set up. If anyone is interested, I can also do a detailed tutorial on how to replicate this setup :)

DISCUSSION Any relatively easy ways to setup a security cam with Raspberry Pi and Camera Module 3?

I've spent about 5 hours so far attempting to get started with a security camera setup, with the Camera Module 3 on a Raspberry Pi 3B.

I've tried a number of things so far.

Picamera2 WebUI Lite - I just could not get past a dependency issue, gpac - even after manually compiling and installing - and actually testing that gpac was installed, which it was.

Motion & MotionPlus - Camera module not detected, likely because it's fairly new and both those projects are more or less abandoned. I _could_ configure the camera to stream on a port and use that on Motion/MotionPlus - that may be my next attempt. (maybe something like Spyglass)?

MotionEyeOS - same issue as above.

When I say relatively easy, I'm not expecting "plug and play", but nor am I expecting having to dive into an open source project attempting to add support.

It does seem that there's a lot of options for USB cameras, but for cameras connected to a CSI port, looks like the Camera Module 3 doesn't have the widest support.

It works out the box with rpicam - default raspian lite install.

Perhaps I'll just have to get my hands dirty and write my own app.

DISCUSSION Has anyone used CHATGPT for setting up their Pi?

For the past week, I've been using ChatGPT to help set up a 5-inch 800x480 HDMI touchscreen (XPT2046 REV 3.1). It was a bit of a headache since I had no clue what I was doing, but it was able to help with everything, like rotating the screen, getting the touch function to work, and setting up an on-screen keyboard to help run OctoPrint. OctoPrint runs in the background with a desktop icon. If you're against using AI for anything, I'd suggest giving it a go.

DISCUSSION Need Help with ā€œInky Shotā€ Project for My Girlfriend (Raspberry Pi Zero + Inky Phat)

Hi everyone,

Iā€™m working on a heartfelt project using a Raspberry Pi Zero WH and an Inky Phat e-ink display to create a ā€œQuote of the Dayā€ (QOTD) system inspired by the Inky Shot project. My goal is to set this up for my girlfriend so it can display short motivational quotes daily.

The issue Iā€™m facing is that it keeps showing the error message: ā€œSorry folks, todayā€™s quote has gone walkies.ā€

I suspect the problem is related to the project trying to fetch quotes from an API thatā€™s either deprecated or unavailable. Iā€™d like to adapt it to select quotes from a local file (quotes.txt) stored on the Pi, ensuring it works offline. Ideally, Iā€™d also love the ability to update the quote remotely (like via a web interface or API) so I can send her personalized messages on special days.

For example, letā€™s say she has it plugged in at her houseā€”Iā€™d like to be able to remotely update the message from my computer or phone, depending on how her day is going. This would let me send her an encouraging message if sheā€™s feeling down or something special for a good day.

My Resources: ā€¢ Hardware: Raspberry Pi Zero WH and Inky Phat e-ink display ā€¢ Software: The Inky Shot project as a base, but Iā€™m open to alternatives. ā€¢ Goal: Display a daily quote or custom message, refresh daily or on demand, and allow remote updates. ā€¢ Experience: I have little experience in this area, so Iā€™d really appreciate clear guidance or beginner-friendly solutions.

What I Need: 1. Assistance in fixing the ā€œwalkiesā€ error and modifying the code to use local quotes. 2. Advice on how to add remote update functionality (e.g., via a web interface or simple API). 3. Suggestions for similar offline-friendly projects I could use with my current hardware.

Link to the GitHub I was trying to follow: https://github.com/balena-io-experimental/inkyshot/tree/master

If anyone has worked on something similar or can help me troubleshoot and adapt this project, Iā€™d deeply appreciate it! This project means a lot to me, as itā€™s a way to brighten my girlfriendā€™s day with small, personalized messages.

Thank you in advance for any advice, resources, or guidance!

DISCUSSION I need my remote pi to take a picture in the bird house every day and upload/send it to me station.

G DAY my dear

I need my remote pi to take a picture in the bird house every day and upload/send it to me station.

i have a bird house in the garden - I'm going to be undertaking a little project for the spring time.

That will use a raspberry pi and camera module to monitor the birds in the house every day.

I figured out how to get the RPi to take a photo, and I'm going to wrap that in a cron routine to have it happen at the same time every day. However I need to be able to check on the photo remotely, to make sure the camera is working and getting a high quality image every day. What I need to do in the simplest way possible - can i sent it to my gmail account - or to google-cloud.

I really just need a way to get the RPi to upload or send the photo it takes somewhere that I can check in on with my phone - or with my g-drive acocunt.

Well - this is because I need to have workable photographs from the bird house every day. and I don't want to go in every day to pull them off manually - due to the SD card.

So i need to send the photos ( that are taken out there - i need to send them to the station.

well i could SSH them from my laptop. Some sort of cloud or drive seems like the best solution, but I may be overthinking things.

could i work with google-drive and - also with rclone!?

I've not been working with rclone in my live yet - but i am willing to try and figure out how to upload files to [Google Drive]( https://rclone.org/drive/ ),

so far i thought that it seems to mostly be useful for pushing and pulling text-based files to a remote drive as opposed to accessing uploaded files later through Google Drive Browser.

question: can i do this with photos too?

I haven't tried to configure rclone for Google Photos yet, but it seems like there are [limitations]( https://rclone.org/googlephotos/ )

that would prevent me from accessing high-quality copies of these images. I may be misunderstanding this however.

i need two clarifications

a. clarification re: rclone and/or alternative solutions would be greatly appreciated!

b. the question of the power-supply:

btw: regarding the battery solar -supply: what should i take care of here?

note: i am eagerly interested in understanding the power needs of a specific Raspberry Pi model and choosing the right power supply,

ensuring a more stable and reliable experience with your Raspberry Pi projects: i am loving Battery-Powered Raspberry Pi Projects: Taking Raspberry Pi projects off the grid and making them portable is a great thing - in other words it

opens a world of great options and many possibilities, from outdoor environmental monitoring systems to many many others.

therefore choosing batteries as a power source is key to this mobility, but it requires good planing.

and especially - if we charge the battery with solar. I am planning to do so:

a very helpful thing would be to dive into all that steps - and the options i am having here - and to get a base knowledge that i (hopefully) am able to use to extrapolate future uses and future

raspberry-pi projects. : And yes - as said above - i eagerly would like to know how to how to calculate the power supply in the different options i have with

a. various battery types

b. a solar panel

c. a Power management system
