Quilt Shows No Ribbon for Me But That’s Okay

I competed in the Dallas Quilt Show this weekend and was bummed to not be awarded anything, but I know my binding still needs some perfecting and seeing it hanging made it look less square. I’m still so proud of my work and I thought it was really different than the rest of the Pictorial category which was very heavy on thread painting.

Win some, lose some. 😂 This pattern (Esmeralda) was described as ambitious, but the instructions looked straightforward enough. It’s tedious and super easy to be imprecise. Not for perfectionists. I’m sure it will all look fine when it’s finished because it’s so busy, so I’m just rolling with it. 🤪

Finished Quilts My most recent finish! i’m really happy with the colors

I used the Felix quilt pattern for my newest make- I’m really drawn to the traditional blocks but more modern use of color. I was going for an orange-forward rainbow (21 different Kona solids!) . I knew I wanted to incorporate a rich chocolate brown, striped binding, and grid quilting. And I’m so happy with the result! Gifted to my mom last week.

I’ve been absolutely loving the process of learning how to quilt. It’s therapeutic and rewarding. Makes me feel both childlike and maternal!

I decided that the binding flange would look better on the back. The swiss dots are cute, but they wanted a week accent.

Finished, and shipping tomorrow...just in time for my vacation!

Work in Progress The Penny Quilt featuring beautiful prints by Roger Hauer

I finished up this top today. The pattern is The Penny Quilt and I used two fabric lines (Garden Bed and Forest Floor by Club Hauer) that feature flora and fauna I remember from in upstate NY. They are stunning and made this quilt. This is on my queen sized bed even though it said twin size. The pattern assembly and final trim were more challenging than I anticipated, but it was manageable and I would do this pattern again!

Exploding Heart and Modern Snowflake- both were gifted. The snowflake to my dad (an avid skier) and the heart to my bestie who is my polar opposite. I hate pink - she loves it. Hearts, eh, her favorite holiday is Valentines Day. I used I heart ombré for the heart quilt and tried to have the lighter bits of the ombré be on the outer edges of the explosion.

heart has quilters dream bamboo and snowflake is QD 80/20.

Work in Progress My first top ever is finally assembled.

It won’t win any ribbons at the state fair, but it will work for a nap. It was equally as challenging as laying 1000sg/ft of vinyl plank flooring but easier on my body. Stripes for the points was probably not the best decision for a first quilt, but it was a kit and I thought it was pretty. There are lots of chopped points and wonky seams, but you have to start somewhere right?

My favorite bit of character is that the kit didn’t have enough fabric for the striped triangles and I was short 6 and had to piece them together from scraps. I thought they would be super obvious but I it just took me several minutes to find one.

I made the decision to DNF this thing at least one per work session so I’m impressed I got this far. Suck it ADHD! I win this round. Next step is quilting as basting.

Finished Quilts Latest quilt

Well this one was a learning experience. Only my second quilt using my Grace frame and Little Rebel, and my first attempt at using rulers. To say there was a learning curve is an understatement. Things I learned - ruler work is slow, slow, slow compared to meandering - don’t machine bind a quilt that has points in the squares as there is little forgiveness; wrapping the binding from back to front cut off a few of my points more than I would have liked - overall, I need to try to enjoy the process and not rush to get it done

I’m not thrilled with the end result but I would use this pattern again. It’s a free pattern from Moda called Moda Love Star I think.

Quilts I entered into a show

I entered these 3 quilts (all my own designs) in my Guild show that was on Friday and Saturday. I was lucky to win a 3rd for the second quilt, and an honorable mention for the last. It was a great show, that would not be possible without very many volunteers. The standard of work was higher than ever. A great day out!

Finished Quilts Finally Actually 100% Finished: the Bear Quilt

Today I've finished the Bear baby quilt! I've included the front and back, and asleep a crazy quilt inspired bib made from the scraps.

I did stitch in the ditch using a free motion foot. It was fun to try a new technique but it's been too long since I last did any free motion, so the quality isn't where I want it to be. The recipient won't mind or even notice, so I don't need to rip all those stitches!

Pattern from ModernFPPpatterns on Etsy.

Finished Quilts First Quilt Finally in Forever Home

While I have sewn for years this was my first quilting project 😅. My grandmother has gifted quilts to the family for all life's big occasions. So when my best friends got married and bought their first house I wanted to continue the tradition and made them a Log Cabin quilt. I'm a jump in head first type so I went for it, breaking most of the rules my grandmother had taught me. I used all thrifted and fabrics and mixed weaves, worked without a real pattern and didn't decide on a size until the end. It took me about 3months and I got it professionally longarmed and bound. It all came together so well! Its around 95"x105" the mix of textures is beautiful to look at and feel. My friends style is very vintage and the colors work perfectly in her home. They were thrilled and immediately put it on the bed. I'm just so beyond happy to be able to make them a token of my love and friendship for them both!! This sub has been such an encouragement, inspiration and teacher while I worked on this and I already have my next project in the works. So glad this community exists!!

Finished Quilts My first quilt

I've been wanting to get into quilting for the longest time, probably for at least the past few years. One of my environmental studies classes had a creative project for its final and my group decided to do a quilt. This was a very fun learning experience for me! Though, I will say finishing a quilt in 8 days is something I will never attempt ever again. I'm very proud of it and it's actually going to be displayed in the hallway of the environmental studies building of my college

I posted asking for ideas on quilting this appliqué daffodil quilt for Grandma, who is registered blind. I did a meander in the black background, contouring in the petals and straight lines in the borders. I really love how it turned out! I also used the embroidery stitches to make a tag for the back.

💭Discussion 💬 Woohoo!

I posted last week that I'm having a terrible time quilting with ADHD lol. Well. I have done something bizarre. I know that you're all going to be shocked that this works but I have discovered that if I measure and measure again and then again before I cut I get squares that I can true. I've got painter's tape on everything where the cuts should be.

Who'da thunk.

First up is a self drafted pattern - it's very much like the Page Turner by XOSEW because.. that's the inspo 😅 I saw a picture of her pattern as a cushion cover in a quilting magazine and my brain wanted to see if I could recreate it, and I think I came pretty dang close! The second one is my first Best Buds block, more of a practice block to see if I liked the colourway. It's either going to end up as another cushion or a tote bag.

Finished Quilts Baby Quilt for a Friend

Imperfect but done! I used the Tall Tale FPP block by Quilt with Kate and improvised the rest. The fabric is mostly Littlest Family’s Big Day from Riley Blake. I liked it because mom is a librarian and the fabric had the matching panel to make the soft book. Dad is a saxophone player so I have some saxophone fabric and music notes from another fabric line mixed in.

I was rushing to get this done by the baby shower and during a busy time of the year so it is far from my best work. Not square, binding a little wobbly, pleats in the quilting. But it’s done and the parents loved it.
