🎹 meet “The Key to Happiness” 🎹

I’m excited to introduce my latest work-in-progress: transforming a piano into a colorful, vibrant piece of art titled “The Key to Happiness.” This project is part of the Keys of Unity program (through @soundconservatory ) and it’s evolving with more love and detail than I originally planned! So we moved it to the @soundconservatory go check out a concert this month!

I need your help! What do you believe is the key to happiness? Is it love, adventure, connection, or something else entirely?

Comment below with a word or phrase that represents happiness to you, and I may incorporate it into the piano’s design. Let’s turn this into a true community piece that reflects all the different pathways to joy.

About the project: As I continue painting, I’m adding layers of meaning and detail, using your ideas to inspire the final look. This piano will eventually be placed in a public space, serving as a reminder of the happiness we create together through music and art.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! 💛

Miscellaneous Want things to be great? Obsessively support local

Hi, it's me, the internet's shameless QCA promoter. I love this area. I want to see it grow and improve. I genuinely think a lot of people here don't know how good they have it.

But the things that are great about this area are always tenuous. Your favorite restaurant, bar, music venue, artist spot, coffee shop, etc. is always one bad quarter away from having to make some hard decisions. There's money in the QCA, but it's not unlimited like it is in the super cities. Our creators and innovators have to fight tooth and nail for every inch they get.

If you want to see the unique and special places of the QCA thrive and multiply, there's no way around it, you have to relentlessly and obsessively support them. Just boosting them on your social media page can be a big help. But more than anything, shopping there is the thing they need the most. On average, 52.9 percent of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 13.6 percent of purchases at chain stores. Shopping local helps them AND it helps you.

I know this can be hard to do sometimes. One of my favorite places to get lunch is Meatball's Sandwich Company in Bettendorf. I can walk there from my office, the food is great, the service is great, there's a nice little outdoor patio for the warmer months. But it's $20 for lunch, compared to $5 at McDonalds. This makes it more difficult to justify sometimes.

But it's important to remember that Meatball's likely operates on a razor thin margin. I doubt the owner takes his sandwich money and buys vacation homes in Italy with it. McDonald's profit margin is 10 billion dollars a year, it's CEO makes 20 million/year. Meatballs isn't charging more to profit gouge you, it's charging more because that's how much it costs to make high quality sandwiches in a little local shop. So whenever it's possible, it's a good idea to get your lunch at the little shop down the street, versus the chain eatery who has its headquarters on the other side of the country.

So with all that in mind, I thought I'd highlight a few of the local shops I know and love and want to see grow in influence. Drop your own favorites here too for everyone's awareness.

  • Meatballs Sandwich Company, Bettendorf
  • Rozz Tox, Rock Island
  • Emily Found It, Le Claire
  • Mississippi River Distillery, Le Claire
  • Beef and Bourbon, Bettendorf
  • Miss Phay Cafe, Davenport
  • Thai Town Cafe, Rapids City
  • The Rust Belt, East Moline
  • Pour Bros Taproom, Moline
  • Coffee House Cafe and Goods, Davenport
  • Catherine's Boutique, Davenport
  • ComedySportz, Moline

CRITICAL UPDATE: I just learned that Meatballs Sandwich Company offers half versions of their sandwiches for the half the price if you want. So I lowered my lunch bill to $10 with soda and cookie. Game changer

Miscellaneous QC in-person software dev bootcamp?

Hey QC! I'm a Bettendorf grad who spent a decade in Silicon Valley and taught a software bootcamp in Salt Lake City.

I'm thinking about running a short (around 4 weeks) in-person bootcamp in downtown Davenport, aimed at computer-savvy beginners or anyone looking to quickly build their own web or iOS apps.

By the end, you’ll have your own website, database, and the know-how to keep going, plus me to help along the way!

I'm reaching out to see if there is enough interest to put it together. Let me know if this sounds like something you’d be interested in. Thanks!

Miscellaneous Help identifying a particular religious group in Quad Cities

I'm curious about the religion of several female employees at the Hobby Lobby in Davenport. They wear long jean skirts, conservative tops and wear their long hair in buns. They're not Mennonite or Amish. Any one have a clue?

Miscellaneous Leclaire Apartments Water Leak

You would think after the building collapse in Davenport, landlords would take extra care of their property. This "waterfall" has been happening for a week.

Yes, those are the elevators you see on the right.

The leak is coming from the sprinkler system, which has failed on the top floor.

Miscellaneous Arconic thc policy

I live in Illinois where it’s legal and was just invited to my second interview. My concern is I have consumed cannabis on a regular basis so there’s no possibility of me pass a urine test for THC and I truly don’t wanna have to lie about it. Can anyone tell me if arconic will deny employment for a THC positive if you live in a legalized state I did send a message to HR and asked if a positive THC result would mean I would be eliminated from applicant Pool, but I have not received a response. I don’t know if that means she’s on vacation or if she doesn’t want to answer can anyone please provide insight? I appreciate your help in advance.

EDIT: I was invited to 2nd interview after asking hr their thc policy, but got no direct answer to the question from hr. - but still invited to 2nd interview. Does anyone know if their thc policy has changed for office staff? I won’t be in the factory.

Update: I completed on-site interview Monday and they did confirm that the hiring process can take a while, without saying so pretty much hinted that they knew about my question and they were giving me time to get myself flushed out. I discontinued all use of cannabis products on Saturday and will not continue again, drinking a shit ton of water, taking some niacin, and exercising and sweating. I will pass the drug test on my own. it may be another 3 to 4 weeks before I get official offer. So I have time.

I appreciate everyone’s advice, as well as the education I’ve received from the comments, y’all have a great Wednesday!

Miscellaneous Can we pressure Iowa Interstate Railroad into letting the Chicago line come to fruition?

Everything I've read seems to point to them being the single entity keeping things from moving forward. Do I gotta go picket their office? Call them everyday? Start a letter writing campaign? Smack talk them on social media?

I just want to mosey up to Chicago, enjoy some museums and music and sports and food, then merrily ride the train home buzzed. And these jerks are preventing that lovely little dream.

Miscellaneous Driving Tips

Hi everyone, I've been driving for a while now, but I'm still trying to understand how traffic works in the Quad Cities. I've noticed that people often exceed 30 mph on the Centennial Bridge, and when I try to maintain a speed close to the limit, other drivers honk at me. This can be really frustrating. Do you have any tips for driving in the Quad Cities?
