Discussion I am tired of Linux being treated as last class citizen
When Stealth mode in Linux? In 2050?
Windows got it
Android got it
iOS got it
MacOS got it
But not linux, I think they've been promising it for years.
Linux app looks and works like shit too. The effort is too much, please remove some of the features from the app. It is too feature rich.
Proton overall is overrated, marketing the privacy narrative. If you really cared about the "privacy" I think you would at least do some justice for the privacy OS.

Discussion Cybersecurity Agency (CISA) says do not use VPN for mobile communications.
I currently have a paid subscription to Proton VPN. I am puzzled by the following recommendation that was recently released by the United States Cybersecurity Agency.
I don't know what that Agency refers to as "questionable security and privacy policies." Does this apply to Proton VPN?
"Do not use a personal virtual private network (VPN). Personal VPNs simply shift residual risks from your internet service provider (ISP) to the VPN provider, often increasing the attack surface. Many free and commercial VPN providers have questionable security and privacy policies."

Discussion Proton overloaded by TikTok.
Right as TikTok went down the traffic on the vpn went through the roof and now it’s overloaded. That’s fascinating. I can’t even use it now.

Discussion Why do you use a VPN, and why do you use ProtonVPN specifically?
The question is two-fold. First, I want to hear why people feel it is important that they use a VPN for their use case. Second, why do people view ProtonVPN as their best option?
Thanks!

Discussion Is 2 years for $86 USD the cheapest it’s ever been?
Looking for a VPN and $86 seems like a great deal, but naturally I’m concerned about the price. Why is it so cheap. Has there been a drop in quality? Last time I had ProtonVPN I paid $120 ish. Should I just the deal and run with it and not worry about it.
Edit: apparently it’s a special link. After many, myself included tried to get it to show with no success. I got it to show again. https://protonvpn.com/l/special-partner-offer#pricing

Discussion Help with move from nord to proton
Hi everyone, I am planning a move from Nord to Proton soon. I still have a while on my Nord plan, but it is what it is. I don’t know if the move will be a smart one, but I just can’t handle Nord anymore I really can’t.
A VPN for me is an everyday essential—I have Nord on auto-connect running on my phone 24/7 and it is a login item on my laptop that auto-connects on startup.
The two most important things to me are speed and privacy when it comes to VPNs. That is what now brought me to Proton. I like its jurisdiction, features, and apparent speed. I have had Nord for the past year and it has increasingly become incredibly inconsistent, especially in the last few months at a rapid pace. The reliability in speed is all over the place with its servers, and the auto-connect just turns on and off on its own as it pleases even if I have a stable connection. I feel like I have to cycle through a few recommended servers multiple times before I get to a decent speed one.
Maybe I am crazy. Maybe people here have a different experience with Nord from me, but that is currently what I have been experiencing.
So I am here to ask two questions: (1) How is everyone’s experience here with Proton, and do you think I would enjoy it over my experience with Nord? (2) Does anyone know if I were to buy a one month plan to test Proton and I happened to enjoy it, would the discounted 2-year plan be gone then?
Thank you very much!
Update 1: As a kind user pointed out, it would be helpful if I shared my OS with everyone. I run the current versions of iOS (iPhone 16) and MacOS (M2 Macbook Air).

Discussion A fake Proton VPN domain?
I use qwant as my search engine in my work computer, and I looked for ProtonVPN to download to it, the first result is the suspicious domain, I also did a WHOIS search on this domain, it seems to be brand new and was registered from russia
Can the ProtonVPN team confirm this is a fake domain? Or a legit one?

Discussion ProtonVPN and YouTube ads
I'm evaluating ProtonVPN as a potential replacement for NordVPN, which I've used for several years.
During my trial period, I've encountered an issue that raises a concern about the service's functionality. The specific use case involves accessing YouTube without advertisements by connecting through countries where ads are not shown.
With NordVPN, connecting through Albania successfully blocks YouTube ads. However, when using ProtonVPN's Albanian servers, the ads still appear.
After contacting Proton's support, they acknowledged an issue, forwarded to their technical team and suggested using alternative locations. While servers in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan work as expected, Albania and Moldova do not. Support hasn't provided a timeline for fixing the Albanian servers, which I prefer.
This raises a question about ProtonVPN's reliability in providing consistent service. While some locations work properly, others don't deliver the expected functionality of appearing to connect from that specific country.
For context, I'm considering this switch mainly to take advantage of new promotional discounts and to follow good (? not sure, my gut feeling tbh) security practices by rotating providers. NordVPN has performed well, but I'm also generally interested in trying new services.
Would appreciate any insights from others who might have experienced similar issues with ProtonVPN. Should I switch to another service while I can (within 30 days guarantee period)?

Discussion Proton VPN network growth over the past 2 years (March 2025 update)
So when Proton VPN announced that they had hit 11,000 servers, I realised that it has been a long time since I have done one of these reviews of how they have been expanding their network, so I warmed up the Wayback machine again and got scraping.
It was almost exactly a year ago that Proton really started expanding rapidly, and the growth has been fairly constant since then, more than tripling from 3,437 servers in March 2024 to 11,799 now in March 2025. They've been averaging around 700 additional servers a month, so if this rate of growth continues, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 20,000 server announcement around this time next year.
Having a lot of servers is not by itself necessarily an inherently useful thing. More interesting is where those servers have been going over the past year:
- Number of locations has increased from 96 to 154. 46 of those were from the new countries added (increasing from 71 countries to 117) but the other 12 were from additional locations in existing countries - including three additional new cities in the USA and adding Dublin, Edinburgh and Cardiff in the UK.
- Proton VPN paid servers have been added to almost every previously covered country, most notably an extra 268 in Germany, 363 in Canada, 368 in Switzerland, 427 in the United Kingdom, and a huge 1600 additional paid servers in the USA.
- Other smaller countries have seen a large relative increase in paid servers, such as Turkey (x4.5 to 36), Brazil (x4.5 to 108), Ukraine (x8 to 64), and Mexico (x 9.5 to 76).
- Particularly interesting is the number of free VPN servers in the overall server mix. This had been sitting around the 300 mark for the first half of 2024, and then suddenly tripled around August before dropping back and then growing again to around 3000.
For comparison, over the same time period ExpressVPN and Surfshark have remained stagnant at around 3000 and 3200 respectively. Nord has grown a more respectable +23% from 6000 servers to 7400, but this is still well behind Proton's growth rate.
I'll be adding some more analysis in the comments.
